The space

In what is now a private hamlet the Shippon shares the classic farmyard space next to the owners' house, also a barn conversion. You are invited to enjoy the comfort of the fully self-contained, high-ceilinged living space. Watch the woodpeckers and other birds on the feeder and see the sun setting over the valley. The garden is accessed through the large oak French doors. The interior has rounded edges and retains original and hand crafted charm, while offering mod cons. All in all, a delightful romantic idyll. On one floor, with no stairs or step and gorgeous bona-fide wet room, the space has also been designed to offer a comfortable stay to the less-abled and wheelchair users without compromising style. Please note for we have another one bedroom property at this location under 'Studio in Lovely Barn Conversion' and are happy to link bookings.

Guest access

In addition to having their own self-sufficient holiday home, patio and garden, guests have access to rural walks from the door.

Interaction with guests

We greet all our guests on arrival. We like to leave people in peace, but we do have conversations with our guests as we encounter each other in the yard or on the paths during their stay. One or the other of us is generally around to give local tips, directions and advice.

The neighbourhood

It is so peaceful and beautiful here, it almost feels as if you have the whole place to yourself, especially coming from a busy city. You can walk for miles discovering spectacular vistas over every crest without seeing another soul. A short scenic drive takes you to the attractive Mediaeval town of Ruthin with restaurants, castle, pubs and other attractions or to the pretty, buzzy holiday town of Llangollen. There are forests and lakes nearby and if you venture off the main highways the country is a maze of single-lane roads linking the villages and farms. Most guests take a trip to some of the attractions of Snowdonia. Adventurous ones have a go at climbing Snowdon, surfing at Surfsnowdonia, Bounce Below, White water rafting (eg near Bala), mountain biking, or the famous zipwire. For those who like steam trains the beautiful scenic train journey can be taken locally from Corwen to Llangollen.

Getting around

Getting here and finding your way around is relatively easy but a car is essential. Ideally placed for exploring the whole of north Wales and the nearer bits of England. The roads are good and except for major holidays congestion-free.

Other things to note

One or two well-behaved dogs are welcome subject to certain rules, please notify us on booking about breed/type and to receive details of rules/cautions.
Latest arrival time: 9 pm, unless previously agreed.
This is a rural holiday cottage and is priced differently to a room in an urban home. It is mostly booked well in advance with week-long bookings that start on Friday. On offer to airbnb-ers are short notice bookings and cancellations, minimum stay is 3 nights in high season.

Guests are asked to leave the premises in a clean and tidy condition (ie washing up done and things put away). Stripping the bed is always very helpful. We do not expect guests to thoroughly clean the place, just leave it in a decent state.Recycling and waste must be separated into the three categories for which bins and instructions are provided: organic waste, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste, and placed in the corresponding outside bins on departure. The waste collection service will refuse to take the waste if it is not correctly sorted. Fantastic hosts! The place was lovely, described very well and the communication with Jan and Robin from start to finish was spot on. They gave us great advise on best places to visit, and we're extremely helpful and friendly throughout. The Easter eggs left for us on arrival was a very nice touch. Couldn't recommended it enough!!

The Shippon is the perfect apartment for those looking for a cosy retreat in a quiet and breathtakingly beautiful location. It's fully equipped with everything anyone may need to feel at home and there is a lot of thought put into everything: the shower gel and shampoo provided are organic and paraben/silicone-free, fresh daffodils are awaiting the guests in the dining table, traditional Welsh cakes, milk, tea and coffee are provided (and much appreciated after a long drive)... we chose the Easter Bank Holiday for our stay and we even had an Easter egg hunt awaiting us, with many chocolate eggs waiting to be found all over the apartment. The views are simply stunning, especially from the back garden. Jan and Robin are excellent hosts and provided very precise instructions about how to get to the Shippon, a few pointers about the area and made us feel very welcome. I couldn't recommend this property enough!

We had an amazing stay in the Shippon - it's such a lovely barn conversion. When we arrived a little later than planned Jan and Robin made our made us feel very welcome. The kitchen was stocked with tea, coffee and yummy Welsh cakes which were quickly demolished after our 4hr drive! To top off our stay, we found our dream house too :)

Great communication from the off. We arrived in the dark, following Robin's precise directions, to a warm welcome from Jan and Robin. As a peaceful break-away this was perfect. Everything is renovated to a lovely standard (and very good for anyone with mobility difficulties/a wheelchair user), and also very dog-friendly too (dogs on leads in the local environment outside the enclosed private garden). Jan and Robin left fresh daffodils, a pint of milk, tea/coffee/sugar and Welsh cakes - little touches that are fab. There were also nice toiletries in the bathroom, and great quality towels. There's an attention to detail, and everything guests might need to make a comfortable stay, as well as a welcome eco-friendliness. We slept superbly in the comfy bed and bedding, and the shower in the wet room in good and powerful. We welcomed having wi-fi, but had I no mobile reception. We made used of the TV/freeview/DVD player, there's a CD player too. There is local information along with books to read on the bookcase. We cooked and ate during our stay, and didn't want for anything we might need to do that. There's also a dishwasher and a washing machine. The garden at the rear, I imagine, is a little sun-trap in good weather, with its table and chairs. There's a lot of birdlife to watch, as they come to feed, which is delightful, and you have great uninterrupted views. All in all, 10/10. Thank you both so much for our short but peaceful break, it's been an absolute delight :-)

Jan & Robin's place was brilliant! Clean, comfy and well equipped. Nestled in a wonderful rural location, it was the perfect base from which we could explore Snowdonia. Jan & Robin were so welcoming and very happy to give their advice about other places to visit around the local area as well. Thanks so much! Lawrence and kali

Jan & Robin User ProfileJan & Robin is a superhost.

We moved here in 2003 from London and set about converting the barns. Robin did a lot of the work himself with local help. We have run 2 holiday cottages from this hamlet. We've had a variety of jobs from boat building to film pr and both used to live on boats on the Thames.
