This is a comfortable family home, situated in the middle of Ashburton village. The house is spacious yet cosy and we loved it. The photos and description are an accurate representation of the house. Communication was very easy and prompt with Wendy. On arrival, Wendy greeted us…
Lovely place located in a gorgeous little town. The house has a lot of character and was perfect for girlfriend and I, her mother and two kids. House was clean and tidy, a little sparse but has everything that is needed for a stay including TV, cooking facilities, a nice patio…
Response from Wendy:
Hi there Jonathan, Thank you for your positive comments which are always appreciated. Your description of sparse surprised me as my philosophy is that when you go on holiday it feels important the house feels homely but doesn't feel over cluttered, but of course that is down to personal taste. The first niggle also surprised me, especially as you were only staying for 2 nights - I never leave milk as I have found that people's preferences differ so much...if I put skimmed milk in, the preference may be for semi-skimmed, full cream, organic, soya or coconut etc and I have found the same with bread.. if I decide on sour bread, guests have sometimes left it as they only eat gluten free or wholemeal etc etc so I made a decision a little while ago not to worry about leaving bread or milk. There is also a really good artisan baker just across the road and if I buy bread, the guests may wish to try another loaf but feel they have already been given a loaf, but not necessarily one of their choosing. I do usually leave a gift of some kind, home made flapjacks, home made jam, local strawberries, scones and cream, local juice or local fudge for example, but unfortunately I ran out of time to get to the farm shop or make my own produce - the cleaner was away on holiday so I needed to do the cleaning/change of bed linen myself which takes up to 4 hours to complete on your own...guests had only left at 11am and you arrived at 3pm. However, I did leave you flowers as I always do for my guests. As to the second niggle, although I mistakenly thought that you could stay a couple of hours later on your day of departure, I did write an airbnb message to you the night before explaining my error and then a text- 15 minutes before check out time as I hadn't heard back from you.. I didn't really want to pressurise you and was aware that should you not be able to leave before 1pm then the cleaner, my husband and I would just have to work together to get it ready for the next guests arriving at 3pm. I apologised profusely for my error, expressed how awful I felt for letting you down so late but did let you know almost 24 hours before checkout. I just hope you don't still bear me any grudges and the happy memories outweigh any negative ones.

My family emigrated from South Africa when I was 7 years old. I have lived and worked in and around London and Birmingham but have been in Devon for the last 20 years, moving to Ashburton ten years ago when I remarried. It is a beautiful part of South Devon & so close to the inc…
