Nominated as the 4th hippest street in the UK, Seel Street is a bustling, lively city centre location.
Stepping out of the door you find yourself in the heart of Liverpool, on a much used and loved street. Staying in such a central location means a kaleidoscope of bars, restaurants, shops, museums, cinemas and galleries are ready to be explored straight away.
Because of the streets vibrant night-scene, it is lively most evenings - and some noise can be heard in the house.
Fall from art, to technology - from espresso bar to cocktail bar - and when the evening is done, step through the door and back in time to a city centre stately home.
History of the house: This house is over 220 years old and is listed on English heritage as a Grade II. Because of the house’s age materials such as horse hair line mortar were used in construction, for this reason people with severe allergies may have a small chance of reaction.
The building’s most recent incarnation was as an antique shop called Ryan Woods antiques (pictured), which traded for 30 years. Then, in 2006, ‘The Art Organisation' took ownership of the building and established the residence as an artists hostel. In the time since, the house has been home to a multitude of talented artists, performers and creative individuals.
From humble beginnings, this property has helped to develop a growing creative arts community in the heart of Liverpool's heritage Rope-Walks.
PLEASE NOTE: This house, despite its age has become possibly the first building in the city centre to utilise a biomass boiler, powered by locally sourced and eco friendly wood pellets. This means unlimited hot water and heating throughout the house in addition to the many wood burning fires. Instructions for operation of this system and rules on fires can be found in the welcome book
Guests will have access to the large kitchen, with use of the fridge, cooker, pots and pans etc that you may need. Use of the kitchen is on a self-catering basis as food is not provided (aside from tea, coffee, milk etc) and guests are asked to please clean up after themselves during and after their stay.
Guests also have access to the beautiful wooden hand crafted bathroom, which has the option of a luxury sky shower as well as standard shower.
The bathroom also features a wood fired sauna which can be used at arrangement by 4+ people for an extra small charge.
A quaint and quirky backyard with usable fire pit is available, and smokers are asked to smoke outside here. The store of wood is also accessed here for the open fires.
The reading room (room 5), is a communal space, when not in use as a bedroom, with a large arts library, comfortable sofa and open wood fire, the ideal place to relax and chill out.
Interaction with guests
We provide guests with a detailed folder including a map, contact details (taxi firms, useful numbers), local things to see and do and places to visit that we would recommend.
The master of the house, Gregory, is an enigmatic man and highly creative artist. A great host and great cook, he may even be inspired to cook you a fabulous dinner and tell you about some of the interesting history of the arts scene in Liverpool.
However Gregory may not always be around, in which case the equally lovely housekeepers, Anna or Monica, will be there on check-in to welcome you to your stay and ensure you are comfortable.
What is offered here - and could never be offered through the multitude of commercial locations available - is a unique perspective on the underground arts scene. With a community of creative artists fused within the fabrics of liverpool’s rich and diverse culture and history, the house provides a common thread in the lives of the people pushing at the edges of Liverpool’s artistic and cultural boundaries.
