Hide away in our lovely home beside the Keiskamma river. Once a fishing cottage, our place was completely renovated by my architect-husband, with a brand-new addition of 2 bedrooms & bathrooms. Our open-concept house is full of art, books, and treasures from the beach: the kitchen, dining room & living room all are connected by a fully covered deck with large french/sliding glass doors that open onto it. Sunsets are amazing, as is bird-watching, fishing & the peace and privacy of the space.

The space
There are two single beds that can be used for children...see photos. One has a bed-frame, the other is just a mattress. The kitchen is fully stocked with all you can need for cooking, and we have a large fridge and freezer.

Where you’ll be

Hamburg, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Our house is a 2 minute walk down to the riverside or you can enjoy the view from the covered deck. Cattle roam freely, and sometimes goats as well, so you need to keep the gate closed at all times. Two doors down from us is the world-renown Keiskamma Art Project, where you can visit the shop and purchase locally-made embroidered goods to support the local community. Thandi-the house manager--will tell you all you want to know about the history of the area, and can take you to the Heritage site, as well as arrange for a viewing of some of the major art-works that the Keiskamma Trust has on display. The Indian ocean is a short drive or a 30 minute walk from our house, parking is available at the beach, and depending when you stay, you may be the only people on the dunes..

I'm a writer and academic, and I lived in Hamburg, South Africa, on-and-off for almost 7 years, before returning to live in Canada (most of the time) in 2015. My partner is a retired architect and he designed and built the house/renovations. Hamburg is a very special place and we try to come as often as we can. Our house is full of odd books and artworks and excellent cooking implements...we hope you make yourself at home and enjoy the space as much as we do!
