Location

Eureka, California, United States

Eureka's Historic Midtown District is one of the most unique and charming neighborhoods and Eureka to walk around. In just a quick stroll through the surrounding blocks you'll come across some of the city's most iconic homes, all boasting very distinct architectural styles from throughout the early 1900 period. The architecture and the ambience of the large homes make this neighborhood one of the safest and serene in the city to walk around.

Henderson Center along with restaurants and retail stores is only a couple blocks away. A walk in the surround blocks will provide a pleasant evening or morning experience of Eureka's residential life.

Eureka is the economic and cultural center of Humboldt County. Its history is rich in the fishing and logging industries and its Native American Tribes. Downtown and residential streets are lined with magnificent Victorians which hearken back to a time when homes were built with great craftsmanship and pride. Live music abounds at venues throughout the city and murals from talented local artists like Duane Flatmo are there to greet you around every corner in Old Town.

Eureka’s Old Town has really been revitalized over the past decade - day and night it’s filled with activity and is full of eclectic shops and numerous restaurants of all types of cuisine. If you can make it here on the First Saturday of the month, you can experience Arts Alive From 6 to 9pm, Old Town in its entirety is transformed as nearly every coffee shop or restaurant becomes an art gallery with live music and refreshments. From June through October, the Old Town Farmer’s Market with live music and local fares runs from 10am to 2pm. Every Thursday at 6pm from June through August, you can catch a live music band on the waterfront as part of the Eureka Summer Concert Series.

If you’re visiting Eureka and Humboldt County, you’re of course here to experience the Redwoods and all that Mother Nature has to offer. You don’t even have to leave town for a taste of the Redwoods or some great hiking. Nestled in the city is Sequoia Park and some magnificent Old Growth Redwoods. Right next door is the Sequoia Park Zoo, which is a real treat for a small city like Eureka - it has a great focus on local wildlife including owls, salmon, and otters, a fun-filled petting zoo, and has some unique residents including red pandas, south american bush dogs, and chacoan peccaries. Headwaters Forest Reserve is also a nice hike right on the outskirts of Eureka.

Eureka is a great launchpad to other destinations in Humboldt County.

To the North and South, you can explore the Redwoods to your heart’s content. If you can make it all the way up to Crescent City, you can treat yourself to some of the most epic memories amongst the tallest trees in the world in Jedediah Smith and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. If you can’t venture that far, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park is only 45 minutes to the North and has a wide variety of trails including Fern Canyon, Tall Trees, and the Miner’s Ridge trails. Arcata, 10 minutes to the North also has Redwood Park. To the South only 45 minutes away, you can drive the scenic Avenue of the Giants through Humboldt Redwoods State Park and explore Richardson Grove and more. Check out (URL HIDDEN) for descriptions of great hikes in each park.

Trinidad just 25 minutes north is a lovely coastal town with numerous beaches and parks to explore - the lighthouse, Trinidad Head, Moonstone Beach, and Patrick’s Point State Park with Agate Beach and Wedding Rock are just a few of the sights.

The picturesque Victorian town of Ferndale, which has played host to a number of Hollywood films throughout the years, is only a 25 minute drive to the South. You can fill the day exploring the charming main street’s unique shops and general stores, walking the streets admiring the beautiful homes, and drive amongst the peaceful dairy farms. If you’re adventurous, you can even head out past Centerville and to the coast to explore the Mattole Valley, Petrolia, and the Lost Coast.

Fun local events throughout the year include:

Humboldt County Fair (August), Best of Humboldt Fair (June),
Redwood Coast Music Festival (April), Arcata Oyster Festival (June), Orick Rodeo (July), Fortuna Rodeo (July), and the Eureka Truckers and Ferndale Tractor Parade (December).

Ed and Elsie are two young professionals who escaped from the city life to return back to their roots in Northern California. While not busy at work, we keep ourselves busy transforming our home into the Sky and the Woods Ranch, tending to our micro-farm which includes a fledgling garden and fruit trees, dwarf and lionhead rabbits, three bumbling goats, six chickens, three peacocks, and three fun-loving puppies. We appreciate the Northern California Coast area for its relaxing rural lifestyle and its proximity to the wonderful sites the area has to offer. We love heading to the beach at any given time and the ability to walk for miles with nobody in sight. We enjoy hiking and biking and viewing the farmland that surrounds the area we live. We are eager to welcome you to our home and help you encounter some of the treasured sites and tasty restaurants that are nearby. Elsie is proud to show off the decor in the house which changes from holiday to holiday and Ed is always ready to recommend a nearby place to take a great photograph.

More often than not, we won't be at the home when you're there. We're always available via AirBNB message and as Eureka natives can provide great recommendations on the local sites, sounds, and shops to take in. When we are around, we are happy to visit as well.
