Extra spacious

Guests love this home’s spaciousness for a comfortable stay.
Relax in a beautiful and historic farmhouse located in the Cumberland Homesteads Historic District. The 1800 square foot home is situated on working cattle and hay producing farm. It is surrounded by countryside consisting of neighboring small farms with rolling pastures and a mountain view. Unwind and enjoy a bit of history in a scenic rural setting. The 2026 calving season begins in March.

The space
Hand-crafted from stone and hardwoods sourced from the surrounding acreage, this charming four-bedroom English-style cottage blends historic character with modern comfort. Original features include hardwood floors, a stone fireplace, unique door hardware, and a beautifully restored vintage cast-iron bathtub. The home is thoughtfully decorated with a mix of heirloom homestead pieces and cozy farmhouse décor.

Guest access
The entire home and 1 acre yard excluding the garage and cabinets on the enclosed porch/utility room. There is an outdoor picnic table and chairs. A gas grill is available upon request.

Due to the nature of cattle, we do not allow guests to enter the pastures or barns. However, the cattle can often be seen in the fields bordering the house, as well as deer, ground hogs, foxes, turkeys, squirrels, and other wildlife. The cattle usually come up from the back pasture in the late afternoon. 2024 calving season will begin late March and continue through April and May.

Other things to note
ADDITIONAL THINGS TO NOTE:
There is paved parking in the rear close to guest entrance. There are various steps as you enter the main floor. The master bedroom has a tub/shower combination and the second bathroom has a tub (no shower). The home has had many updates over the years which has made it more comfortable for modern day living, yet it has some quirks. The refrigerator and a second dining table are located in the enclosed porch/utility room next to the kitchen. The home is on city water, but there is an attached well house on the side of the house that we must attend to during freezing weather. This amounts to me or a family member turning on/off a heat bulb from an exterior door on the well house. The gas logs are only available during cold weather. Ladybugs love this house and find their way inside. Bed quilts and some decor will change with the season and might not be exactly as pictured.

Neighbourhood highlights

Gladys House is part of the historic Cumberland Homesteads District designed by William Macy Stanton. The neighborhood is comprised of small farms, originally established during the Great Depression, as part of FDR’s New Deal under the provisions for the development of Subsistence Homesteads. The Cumberland Homesteads retains a distinct identity due to the architectural style of its stone cottages. My husband grew up in the Homesteads, and his parents were from original Homesteads families.

Where I went to school: Middle Tennessee State University
Fun fact: I am an Air Force Brat
I love being a host to guests visiting the beautiful rolling landscape of Tennessee. At an early age, I fell in love with country living and Tennessee when I visited my Grandparents’ farm. Aside from my need to be a farm girl, I have always been interested in historic places and antiques. Sharing our historic Cumberland Homesteads cottage is fulfilling adventure, especially since my husband is a third generation Cumberland Homesteader.
