About this listing

This cozy "cottage" is one of two attached apartments behind our house, 250 feet from Sarasota Bay. The private fenced backyard with deck and the comfortably furnished screen porch provide opportunities to enjoy Florida's great outdoor weather.

The space

Our cozy, comfortable apartment is tiled throughout except the bedroom which
has new carpeting. The tiled screen porch is a lovely location for dinner or morning coffee or use your private deck or patio for enjoying a little sun in the winter. There are fresh herbs growing in the garden to use for cooking and you might find fresh bananas in your garden as well.

Guest access

Guests will have access to our front yard for watching sunset or just enjoying the breeze off the bay. Our two Hobie pedal, paddle, or sail kayaks can be available with arrangement ahead of time. Also, a man's and a woman's Jamis Bike can be made available.

Interaction with guests

I am a retired environmental scientist and love talking with people and sharing my experiences on Sarasota Bay and the local birding, biking, hiking, or kayaking venues. Carmen is still actively working in her nursing career and really enjoys reading, photography, biking, birding, or kayaking on her days off. She enjoys chatting with everyone on her three day weekends but after a 10-12 hour shift of nursing may not be up to socializing.

Other things to note

A small, quiet pet may be acceptable, let's discuss it.

The first two words that come to mind in describing this special cottage are cozy and thoughtful. The photos on the site are exactly how the cottage looked when we stepped in for the first time. The cottage was immaculate and contained anything that you could possibly need whether you’re staying for a few nights or for a few weeks. This wonderful cottage is just steps away from the bay and watching some beautiful sunsets. Jack is an amazing, congenial host and very welcoming. We stayed here on our honeymoon, and he thoughtfully provided some extra treats to make our stay extremely special. The location was perfect for us – less than two blocks from a wonderful family-owned Italian restaurant, very close to the Ringling Museum, and a short driving distance to downtown Sarasota and Lido Beach. The cottage is a reader’s paradise with several places to sit quietly with a good book or to just enjoy the surroundings. Jack also took us to where his kayaks are kept and did everything he could to make our kayak adventure a pleasant experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to go back next year to celebrate our first anniversary.

Jack and Carmen are exactly what others have said about them. Our flight was delayed over 3 hours, but the communication with Jack was excellent and when we finally arrived, they were waiting for us to give us a little tour for the beautiful cottage. When I travel back to Sarasota, there is no doubt I will be staying here again.

This Airbnb was perfect for us. It's a great location because it's quiet and secluded but within walking or driving distance of everything you want. It's right on Sarasota Bay so it's very scenic. We drove to the beaches or nearby locations every day. Great shopping and dining close by. We had everything we wanted in the Airbnb including lots of cute areas for dining or sitting outside with a glass of wine. Jack and Carmen are lovely people and ideal hosts, always willing to help if needed.

Our host was very cordial and generous. He was always available for any problems (none to speak of...) as well as an insider's knowledge and guidance to local places of interest. The accommodations were clean and utilitarian, and included a clothes washer and dryer. Internet service was fast and reliable always. The setting is private, but close to the great cultural asset Ringling Museum and grounds. Access to main traffic arterials was excellent. The setting is just a few tips to views of Sarasota Bay and beautiful sunsets.

We stayed for a week at Cottage by the Bay. We had a great time. Jack was quick to respond to any question we had-had great suggestions on places to eat/shop. We had a great adventure on our kayak trip. Lucas boats was a once in a lifetime experience! The cottage was clean and offered extras-Mamas pastries, fresh picked strawberries, Starbucks coffee, fresh orange juice. Great experience!

Jack User ProfileJack is a superhost.

I'm a retired environmental scientist and have spent much of my career studying, and helping to restore and protect Sarasota Bay. I enjoy using the bay for fly fishing, kayaking, birding, or just watching our spectacular sunsets. I also enjoy gardening, cooking, mushroom farming, and camping with my wife Carmen at our rustic cabin on the Myakka River.
