A private room in a fantastic huge warehouse loft in Bermondsey, near Tower Bridge – exposed brick walls, high ceilings, wooden beams, original cast-iron windows, railway arches and private roof terrace. Continental breakfast is included in the rate.
Jubilee Line zone 2 is only 6 mins walk away.
This is a stunning place to stay with exposed brickwork, high ceilings, wooden beams and floors, and original cast-iron warehouse windows; the cobbled courtyard, 19th century railway arches and a private roof terrace add to the character of the building, and there's a friendly community of printmakers and designers who work in the studios on the lower floors.
The bedroom now has a new double bed and new fitted carpet, and is furnished with antique pine furniture. The bathroom was installed in 2012. There are feather pillows and feather duvets, and all bed linen and towels are provided.
From the private roof terrace there are views of Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, the CIty of London, Battersea Power Station and the iconic Shard. The South Bank's variety of cultural activities, the West End, Westminster, historic Greenwich, achingly trendy Shoreditch and Spitalfields, and quiet riverside walks are all within easy reach.
The apartment consists of an open-plan living room and kitchen, music room, entrance hall and stairs leading up to the terrace overlooking the railway lines – the first passenger railway ever built, the 1836 London to Greenwich line. There is obviously some noise from passing trains but, as you can see from my reviews, it has never been a problem for anyone.
The building itself used to be a textile warehouse, dating from the turn of the century and is located in a friendly, vibrant neighbourhood. A market, an excellent 24-hour grocery/deli/bakery, major supermarket chains, pharmacies, a Post Office, pubs and bars and the large open spaces of Southwark Park and the Thames riverside walks are close by.
On Saturdays from 9am-4pm numerous artisan food producers open to the public in the railway arches near Spa Road and Dockley Road (only a couple of minutes walk away) – think Borough Market but without the tourists and pushchairs! Search the web for Spa Terminus for more information, but some of the producers include:
• Monmouth Coffee Company
• Neals Yard Dairy and locally produced Bermondsey cheeses
• The Ham and Cheese Company (salame, prosciutto, mozzarella, salsiccie)
• superb organic butchers and greengrocers
• The Little Bread Pedlar bakery/patisserie
• The Bermondsey Honey Company
Excellent transport links via the Jubilee Line from Bermondsey (zone 2, 6 mins walk) direct to the West End, Canary Wharf. The Jubilee Line now runs through the night on Fridays and Saturdays. There are also plentiful bus routes.
