Neighbourhood highlights

Urban planner Juan Palomar y Arias considered Chapalita a place to live better during the twentieth century and largely determined the social geography of the City, with the migration of the people with greater economic resources from the Center to Chapalita.

The layout of the colony was inspired by the garden cities of English urbanism, which consists of fractions surrounded by green areas, which made Chapalita a place with a unique personality, with order, planning and well-being.

The promoter and developer of the colony was Mr. José Aguilar Figueroa, while the urbanization is due to José Amezcua. Chapalita was an important part of the boom of residential colonies with green areas, neighborhood order and self-sustainability.

Chapalita is a benchmark in urban development across the country. Something that characterizes this colony is the independent administration of public services, which had to start in this way due to the lack of provision of the same, being far from the center of Zapopan.

In 1954, the Chapalita Neighbourhood Association was established to manage garbage collection, cleaning and public toilet, maintenance and cleaning of its gardens, parks and roundabouts, as well as the proper functioning of public lighting, among other services.

With the passage of time, the residential colony became a business area such as restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as a place with a high rate of vehicle passage, being at the confluence with important avenues such as Lázaro Cárdenas, Guadalupe, López Mateos and Las Rosas.

One of the main meeting points in Chapalita is its roundabout, where every Sunday it becomes a place of great flow of art sales, cultural events and family coexistence.

Glorieta Chapalita
It is one of the main emblems of the colony, the area is surrounded by trees and benches where you can sit and enjoy the afternoon. One factor that has given him identity is that on Sundays he turns into an urban gallery - known as Jardín del Arte - in which various artists meet to exhibit his work.

At first it was known as Guadalupe Park, and in it there were games for children, skating rink, metal hoops and sandboxes, among others. People remember it as a village square, because on Sundays young people, both men and women, would turn around.

In the 70s the roundabout was invaded by a commercial tianguis who wore it on Fridays, who evicted it to remodel it in the early 80s; nowadays it is an area with a great gourmet offer.
