The Hayloft was once an agricultural building on a working dairy farm. We made it into a livable space back in 2007. We kept it very primitive as we wanted to keep the the original barn beauty intact. The German pioneers who built it back in the late 1800s used a Log Crib style utilizing the local timber. It has impressive hand hewn logs throughout the structure. It is on the historic Buckeye Trail near Caldwell Ohio. This is a very rustic experience. The Hayloft is on a remote gravel road.

The space
We are near both Marietta and Cambridge Ohio. The Wilds wildlife refuge is 27 miles from Caldwell. Seneca Lake is also 27 miles from Caldwell. Wolf Run State Park is just five miles from Caldwell. Salt Fork State Park is 29 miles from Caldwell.

Where you’ll be

Caldwell, Ohio, United States

Are you looking for a unique experience in the country? Come spend the night at the Hayloft! Built in the late 1800s it showcases the incredible craftsmanship of the German pioneers who settled in southern Ohio. The impressive log structure was made into a living space back in 2007 when my dad retired from the Center for Families and Children and wanted his very own getaway cabin. Since we were just using the barn for storage and we weren't farmers I suggested we make the barn into a house instead of building a brand new cabin. He liked the idea and agreed. Some of our neighbors were a little skeptical at first, but when they saw the finished product they were awed. My dad wanted to keep it as primitive as possible and not take away from the overall Barn decor. It sports a cathedral like tongue and groove pine ceiling, and a cat walk from one Hayloft to the other. We insulated it from the outside so we could keep the look of the original oak barn siding on the interior. The Hayloft has two bathrooms. My dad didn't want a tub so the full bathroom just has a large shower space. There is a full kitchen and large rectangular island to sit and enjoy your meals. There is one private bedroom that has a full sized mattress and two open bedroom areas, one with a queen and a twin, and the other has three twin sized futons.
The Hayloft is about 15 miles southeast of Caldwell off route 78. We are nestled right on the historic Buckeye Trail on Hoot Owl Ridge Rd. We have 15 acres of hill country with valley views and a large White Pine forest. There are many bird viewing opportunities with a vast array of feathered friends visiting our various feeders during the day. Listen for the call of the Whippoorwill, or the flute like magic of the Wood Thrush. Watch as the Hummingbirds dive bomb each other and slurp sweet nectar while sitting on the front porch. Hike the Buckeye Trail or sit underneath the two ancient White Oaks just a short walk away from your front door. Diagonal from the barn is a one room schoolhouse that was dragged onto the property many years ago. It has become a lounge of sorts and has cable tv if you so desire. There is also a campfire area for those who like to sit around a fire.
We are located about 30 miles south of Cambridge and 30 miles north of Marietta. The Wilds is a pretty short drive north of our location. Wolf Run State Park, Salt Fork State Park, and Seneca Lake are all reasonably close if you are looking for some outdoor activities. A few things to keep in mind while deciding if you want to stay at the Hayloft. This is not a luxury hotel or cabin. This is an old barn and it is a rustic experience. We live way back in the Woods so there are buzzing insects and all that comes with living out in nature. The occasional bird or bat can find its way inside and can usually be encouraged to exit out the door. I have a dog who roams free and likes to chase things and bark at them. So if you don't like dogs this probably wouldn't be a good fit. But if you have an adventurous spirit and a love for nature this is a once in a lifetime experience. We have had many hunters stay with us and my mom brought a group of 12 women down for a Soul Collage weekend getaway. I want to quote a card left by one of those ladies who stayed in the Hayloft. "Your generosity of spirit is surely a legacy from your parents. The Hayloft is a haven and hearth for creative energy. We so enjoyed our slumber Party." Many of our family members and friends have stayed with us and we now want to share the Hayloft with others. So come and stay with us at the Hayloft.
