The Clerks Quarters is a lovely period property in Margate Old Town. The building was once the offices of a Victorian lemonade factory and forms the entrance to a private mews courtyard. This cosy upstairs flat is perfect for a romantic break for two, or solo travellers, and is just a stones throw from the beach, famous sunsets and the Turner Contemporary Gallery. Margate's award winning restaurants, cafes, bars, and independent boutique shops are all on your doorstep.

The space
The flat has been recently refurbished with thoughtful material choices, colours and textures. An abstract painted wall mural to the entrance hall and stairwell, welcomes you up into the living spaces, which are newly decorated with bright, warm colours, original artworks and prints on the walls and vintage furniture. We hope you will enjoy the calm creative feel.

Kitchen / Living
The new, open plan kitchen has bespoke plywood panelling and built in appliances including; electric oven + hob, and fridge with small freezer compartment. There is a microwave oven, toaster, kettle, and all the usual kitchen essentials.

Open plan to the kitchen is an intimate dining/breakfast nook, perfect for two, with vintage table and chairs and rattan lighting.

The living space includes midcentury sofa/daybed with linen & velvet cushions, sheepskin, and with wool/cotton rugs. A stone coffee table provides space for drinks, books and magazines. The vintage rattan chair provides additional seating, and mid-century shelving provides storage space for more magazines, books, playing cards and a chessboard. There is an acoustic guitar for musical guests to relax with and a radio with bluetooth speaker is available to pair with your phone or i pad. A full length french door with juliette balcony railings lets in light and breezes on warmer days.

Bedroom
A kingsize bed, with 100% cotton, hotel bed linen and an anti-allergy duvet. A pair each, of anti-allergy and down & feather pillows are provided. Dark wall tones, bespoke lighting and a soft wool carpet, create a cosy romantic space. There is a mid-century teakwood drawer unit and hook rail for hanging clothes. The small victorian sash window looks down Love Lane towards the sea. All linen and towels are freshly prepared for your arrival.

Bathroom
The good sized bathroom has a bath shower combination and wash hand basin with mirror and spotlights. The newly installed water tank ensures plenty of hot water with great pressure for showers. Or run a hot bath and soak in the deep steel tub. Natural toiletries are provided.

Historic & Contemporary
Our property sits on a corner of Margate Old Town and still bears the name of the REEVES family business, who in the 19th century were purveyors and bottlers of mineral waters, lemonade and ginger beer. The flat is in the upstairs of what was once the clerks offices for the factory. Below is now an artists studio. Garden pots and planters fill the courtyard entrance to the flat and studio space.

On The Doorstep
Cross the road and wander through the Old Town to discover wonderful independent and vintage shopping, cafes and restaurants. In a few hundred yards you will reach the wide sandy bay and Turner Contemporary Gallery. After a gallery visit or beach walk you can stroll down the harbour arm for morning coffee, lunch or sunset drinks. In town and along the piazza and seafront are some great restaurants and perfect spots for pre-dinner drinks looking out to sea.

Along The Beach
To the west, the train station, famous adventure ride park Dreamland, and the wonderful rooftop bar Ziggys (summer only) are just a short walk along the seafront.

Explore Further
Turning right outside the flat and away from the sea down King Street, will take you to the fascinating Shell Grotto, and also browse the incredible RG Scotts Vintage Emporium inc Junk Deluxe.

Cliftonville
A landmark Margate building, the Tudor House sits to the right of the flat . The hill winds up past it towards Cliftonville and the famous Northdown Road shopping street. A variety of traditional shops, Turkish and Polish groceries and businesses, now mix with new coffee shops, plant filled cafes, yoga spaces, wine bars, artist studios, galleries, record shops and hairdressers.

Swimming
As well as the beautiful beach there is the famous Grade 2 listed Tidal Pool at Walpole Bay - a 20min walk away. To get a feel for this wonderful local swimming spot watch the film trailer for : 'Taking The Waters' by Kathryn Ferguson on Vimeo

Inside the flat you will find more information on our favourite restaurants and more things to do in the local area.

I am a designer and my wife is an artist who has her studio in the Old Town (underneath our airbnb flat) We moved from London with our three children (now grown up) around 13 years ago, and have lived and worked in Margate for most of that time. I design and interpret museum and heritage sites all over the world and enjoy travelling, often staying in airbnb properties. We love living here and walk on the beach everyday with our dog Moses. We love the sea, skies and changing landscape , as well as the vibrant music and arts scene. When I am not designing museum spaces, I play guitar and write music. Our last amazing trip was to Cambodia.
