Interaction with guests
We will help any way we can - but we are often busy with work demands. As former tour company owners, we give a great island tour or can provide details for the rest your New England or Canadian trip.
Peaks Island is a lovely, small (1.25 square mile), unbridged island 3 miles off Portland, Maine's largest city. Every amenity you could want you should find in Portland, with all the scenery & peace you could want on Peaks; it is truly the best of both worlds.
PLEASE note: this IS an island, with rather limited options for restaurants/meals and other services; it is much more significantly limited in the off season/winter. If you have any questions or specific needs, please ask.
Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal is on the city bus line & is taxi-accessible. Portland has bus & train terminals, car rentals & an airport. Check ferry schedule for departure times to Peaks Island from Casco Bay Lines.
A visit to Peaks will require at least some walking. There is a taxi on the island & bikes available for rental. We MIGHT also have a vehicle available for you to drive if you so desire; it depends on our schedules.
PLEASE NOTE: you will NOT want to bring your car to the island. The ferry cost is prohibitive & the waiting line to get on & OFF the island can be very long (think in terms of HOURS). After you book, I can send you a link with information about Portland Parking to help; we can also give you very specific advice and directions for parking in Portland.
Other things to note
The boat schedule is unforgiving & parking in Portland is ALWAYS a challenge. We CAN provide helpful advice, all nearby parking locations, etc., as we know the secrets well. PLEASE NOTE: bringing your car to Peaks is NOT recommended, due to the high cost & huge time requirements for coming & going.
OUR LIFESTYLE: We often stay up late but we both work, usually leaving early morning.
FOOD: We don't do a lot of home cooking & I'm gluten free, so things you may be used to eating won't be found here. On your own for meals.
BOAT SCHEDULE & CONFIRMATIONS: PLEASE be clear about arrival time as much as possible & confirm which boat you are coming on. A bit of planning is required & some of that effort is ours.
TICKETS: A ferry ticket is required for everyone (seniors, children, dogs & bikes). People tickets are $8 each (round trip), & cars cost $80+ in season.
PARKING: Parking in Portland is a challenge, but we can offer advice & help. When the time comes, we should talk on the phone.
Please know that this is our HOME & we ask that you respect the boundaries we set & at least make an effort to clean up after yourselves.
Happy trails - and we look forward to meeting you!
