About this listing

Quiet country setting with no neighbors and a huge 4 bedroom house with games and toys ... very much like gandma's house with modern amenities. Fire pit, charcoal grill, porch swing, fruit trees like apples, berries and grapes.

The space

Fly fish the fabulous Elk River and its back fork then come back to your stunning mountain cabin to crystal clean air and the best-tasting spring water on earth, and mountain-top views set within a gorgeous hardwood forest on 18 acres with no fencing. Lumber companies conveniently left a great 1 mile gravel road from the main highway 15 and the surrounding virgin forest creates utter privacy.

Summer sightings include deer and fawns, squirrels, birds and fields of butterflies. When our children were young they'd roof-watch the wildlife that didn't come into the clearing, and the on-site blueberries in summer and apples in the fall ensure bear and cub sightings nearby.

Only 45 minutes to Snow Shoe for high life, or about the same from Elkins. Wander the West Virginia-priced (inexpensive) antique shops with terrific finds, or find some weekend mountain music at the many heritage weekends, where relations near and far visit for a town family reunion.

Remind yourself and the kids how life was ''back when.''

The cabin (called a ''camp'' in the mountains) was lovingly hand-crafted from 26 kinds of timber by a master carpenter. There is central air, radiant heating if you'd rather, a grill and smoker, unlimited hard line calls, a new television with satellite, a washer/dryer/microwave, games, and plenty of books for reading during your stay.

Guest access

Fly fishing, craft & artisan shows, mountain live music, hiking and ATV trails, snowboarding and cross-country as well as downhill skiing at nearby Snow Shoe, antiquing or quiet reading

Interaction with guests

I am available by email, hard line or cell phone and end my numbers when you get the key code. I don't call during your visit unless you ask ... ringing during your week of solitude and peace is really jarring! Feel free to use the hard line telephone but you may want to unhook ... and live longer.

What a great place to relax

Enjoy a quiet weekend in complete seclusion. No neighbors, no distractions. Just be warned that cell data service is unavailable in much of the area, and a 4x4 will be almost certainly necessary if the long driveway is at all wet. Highly recommended.

Great place to come and get away and tune out from the hectic everyday life. Here your kids will put down the electronics and play outside! Also, it's just a short drive down the mountain to Bergoo where you can find some great trout fishing and swimming holes.

We had a great stay here! It was nice to be able to disconnect and be so close to the river. We hiked right out the back door, shot our bows in the yard and laid in the sun in the hammock most the day!

From the day we first called to confirm our booking, Donna was incredibly helpful. When a bunch of "city folk" take a trip to the mountains, we need great directions and Donna certainly gave them. Her welcome letter was all-encompassing and incredibly informative. The property itself is absolutely breathtaking. We were lucky enough to see it on a beautiful, sunny day and on a real snow day. The mountains of West Virginia are unforgettable, and if you are looking for a place to experience the peace, beauty and serenity they have to offer--I would highly recommend this lodge. It is spacious, warm, welcoming, and Donna and David are wonderful, attentive hosts. It will be a trip you will never forget.

I am a Cornell Hotel School graduate that works in politics, so sharing this house is a great hobby.
