Great location
100% of recent guests gave the location a 5-star rating.
Privacy overlooking woods & ponds, near Michigan’s most popular state park, breweries, wineries, antique malls, farm-to-table restaurants. Fully equipped kitchen, fire pit, gas grill. Fish on site. Kayak, bike, hike nearby. Ideal for nature lovers. Separated from our home by breezeway. Private entrance, quiet road, dark nights. Daytime woodworking noise possible. Wifi, but no broadband (see below). Broad selection of DVDs.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: We follow CDC protocol. Detailed info below.

The space
Coronavirus update: We now block a minimum of three days between visits. This gives us time to sterilize air and surfaces with UVGI, then air out the apartment before thoroughly cleaning, and finally disinfecting.

From the living room, step through a sliding door onto your own deck for al fresco dining overlooking our ponds and woods. Kitchen has full-size fridge, stove, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffee pot. Gas grill and fire ring outside. Harvest-time guests may enjoy veggies freshly picked from our garden. Our house manual and "Trails & Ales" hiking guide provide loads of information about area breweries, restaurants, entertainment venues, parks, bike and kayak rentals, skating rinks, cross-country skiing, wine & beer tours, and much more.

We prefer low-key guests and no loud parties.

Two parking spaces just outside your entrance are reserved for you.

Our property is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including deer and birds of many species, even a resident heron. The best time to view wildlife is at dawn and dusk. Imagine morning coffee on the deck, watching the heron catch fish, listening to frogs and birdsong and roosters crowing. At the end of a day of hiking or lounging on the beach, cozy up around a campfire to watch the fireflies come out. No license is needed to fish in our private pond, which has lots of bluegill and bass.

Broadband is not available in our area. We provide a Wifi hotspot but service is slow. Broadband can be accessed from a couple of nearby facilities (details in our House Manual). If you need to work remotely or watch television, Heron's Rest is probably not a good choice for you. The TV screen is for watching DVDs, and we have a broad selection to choose from. Television channels are not available. But we do have a LOT of books to read, and a chess/checker board.

Where you’ll be

Sawyer, Michigan, United States

Heron's Rest is just minutes from Greenbush Brewery and Infusco Coffee. Another five minutes will get you to Warren Dunes, Michigan's most popular state park, with its miles of white sand beaches and hiking trails in forested dunes. The famed Backroads Bikeway passes within 1/8 mile of Heron's Rest. If you don't feel like driving or riding, simply stroll up the road to access a sweet little trail with spectacular marsh views.

Our region is rich in hiking trails, breweries and wineries. To help you choose your activities, we provide "Trails & Ales", winery brochures, and a Harbor Country Guide. Our House Manual details our favorite restaurants and activities.

Several years ago, we signed a conservation easement on our land, ensuring it will remain in a natural state for perpetuity. We are now working to restore the lawns to mini prairies by removing invasive vines and allowing native flowers and grasses to return. We mow around the house, as well as paths to the pond. Herons, beavers and deer are frequent visitors — sometimes even bald eagles. Bird watchers, bring your binoculars! In the early morning and evening, watch for deer passing through.

My husband and I own and operate Center of the World Woodshop. Terry designs and makes furniture, and I sell it in (along with the work of other local artisans) in our showroom. We operate three Airbnb units: two connected to our showroom, another next to our home and shop. Terry and I love to travel, and while we're casual, we're particular about comfort, quality and aesthetics. Each of our Airbnb units is unique, but they all share the same attention to comfort, quality and aesthetics that we appreciate when we travel ourselves. Guests can expect superb attention to cleanliness without a lot of nasty chemicals, complimentary coffee (locally roasted!), plus cream and a couple of welcoming brews in the fridge. These apartments are cozy, comfortable and inviting. Our House Manual and Trails & Ales guide provide a wealth of information about the area's restaurants, breweries, wineries, hiking trails, beaches, and other area attractions.
