Thornton House was built in 1873 and served as a home and medical practice for two generations. Much of the original character is preserved and is tastefully furnished with period antiques and comfortable rooms with private bathrooms. Guests can enjoy comfortable rooms and a full breakfast in the morning in a quiet location away from the railroad and Main Street but is within a five minute walk to over five restaurants, shops, the riverfront and the city park and river lookout, Mt. Hosmer.

The space
The Garden Room offers a private entrance from the lower garden and is located in the same house yet is more secluded than other rooms in the B&B. Whereas guests come and go upstairs you will only see the other guests when you come up for breakfast or if you want to visit the upstairs common areas. Guests in the Garden Room have an outside seating area and for breakfast in the morning have a set of stairs up to the dining room area. For those with mobility issues, there is a step up into the shower and also a step up to the toilet.

Guest access
Breakfast in the morning is provided (there are outside stairs up to the dining room) and the Garden Room guests have outside seating for their use that overlooks the small shed and landscaped gardens. Guests in the Garden Room are able to use the common areas upstairs in the main part of the B&B if they wish.

Other things to note

Hello! What brought me to this area is what I believe will bring you to this area: it’s unparalleled charm, beauty and friendliness. Lansing, Iowa is situated on what I think is one of the most beautiful parts of the Mississippi River which was designated as a national wildlife refuge in 1924. In the summer months, you’ll experience an abundance of bald eagles, walking and hiking trails with beautiful, Mississippi River vistas- one of which is Mt. Hosmer that starts near the Thornton House B&B. In the fall, you’ll experience the amazing colors we’re known for: reds from sumacs, maples and Virginia creeper, yellows from maples, elms and ash punctuated with bright oranges from other colorful maples. There’s plenty to see and do here with local wineries, plentiful restaurants and a river view visitor center that’s unmatched in this 3 state region. I am happy to help you discover things to do upon visiting that will make your stay to this area as enjoyable as possible! With an IT background working for Cargill in downtown Chicago, I found this area back in 1998 where I maintained a vacation home close to Lansing, IA. When I was able, at age 40, I formally retired here to own and operate the Thornton House which was turned into a beautiful Bed and Breakfast after numerous upgrades designed to offer guests comfortable and relaxing rooms, and a great (real!) breakfast in a historically significant 3 story Italianate offering many river views from the upper floors. Come and see for yourself what has brought me and the many guests to the Thornton House B&B in Lansing, Iowa!
