This comfortable and pretty little home was the residence of an Appalachian subsistence farming family. It continues to exude the calm perseverance these folks needed to survive years ago... though it is completely updated to meet today’s standards of comfort and convenience. Here one can enjoy both forests, trails, creeks and a river. Relax and unwind on the old time porch and swing, facing the RR and N Toe River.

The space
This 6 room Appalachian mountain home will give you a rare glimpse into the actual life of a family of 6 who built this house and lived in it for over 85 years. They grew most all they ate, farming with only a horse; the father also traded horses and grew tobacco for a little cash. They only used wood for all their cooking or heating. This roomy, tho simple, 900 sq ft house is right near CSX RR tracks, with the N. Toe River steps beyond. To Lee Byrd's former home, I have added all the modern amenities one expects to be comfortable: fans in most every room, a fully equipped new kitchen and one new big bathroom with a rain shower. No tub. New electric service and plumbing throughout... We discovered the original walls and floors and meticulously restored them all. Both bedrooms have a double bed, with a new firm mattress. Most furnishings are original to the period and this house, lovingly restored. One or two nights and up to four guests cost the same.

It is NOT a neighborhood. This is a hamlet called "Red Hill" right on the Mitchell-Yancy county line. My nearest permanent neighbor is 1/2 mile away. I am 77, live alone with 2 cats, and have spent most every summer here since 1973 with no adverse incidents that I didn't cause myself!. In spite of being a "summer person", I have been accepted into this local mountain community. Always ready to share my experiences living and raising two childen, during summers and school vacations, in this remote and formerly geographically isolated mountain area ----as you wish..

Raised in Tampa, but live in St Pete since '63. I am active, curious, outgoing, independent and fun -- enjoy all nationalities. Collected art worldwide. Passionate and avid gardner.. Founded a community garden 20 blocks away..grow many own vegetables in spite of living in a high rise condo. Finnish nationality...speak Finn too. Understand broken English quite well. Active in Friendship Force International and enjoyed hosting many different international guests. Have traveled to over 100 countries...and still travel a lot . Graduate degree in Ethno-Anthropology. My home in Florida is rarely available, unfortunately. I do know this area very well though, and can advise and direct my guests to most all places of interest in the Tampa Bay Area. Indoor or outdoor public (fee) parking lots avail. next door. I live everyday to the (Website hidden by Airbnb) always busy with my many projects and interest and friends...never idle. Am 2 blks walk to famous DALI museum; 3 blks to Museum of Fine Arts plus many fine galleries. As an active member, l frequent them all. I summer I live in Red Hill NC and have two homes next to each other available to host Bed and Breakfast and self catering guests from early summer to Fall...exact dates vary. See Bakersville, NC listings. I have collected local artist's works for decades and live with their creations in my homes. Guests will be able to use hand made plates and mugs for their custom made breakfast. My farmhouse has been our summer home for 44 years. The little house by the rail road has been rehabbed and furnished in its original style. ..with modern plumbing, bathroom and kitchen added! It is perfect place to stay for railroad buffs, as it was the main route for the former Clinchfield RR, now CSX. It is no longer a busy track, as only 2-3 trains run these days. All my guests so far have loved staying in both properties...I have loved having them too...have made lots of extremely interesting new friends hosting! There is so much to do around here and I am happy to share all I know to make sure your have the best visit ever. Plus I have 150 acres to hike on and 1/2 mile on the North Toe River to enjoy splashing in or fishing. Fishing is good for at the skilled angler...need a NC license tho.

During your stay

I love meeting new folks and am delighted to sit on the porch and visit here in the 1906 Farmhouse or down the drive to Lee Byrd's bungalow. I am comfortable with all nationalities and understand "broken English" with ease. I have summered here over 45 years and know the area and the locals. I can direct you to find all sorts of adventures and beauty spots for photo ops in addition to those right here on my 150 acres and 1/2 mile riverfront..
