Ideal base for those wishing to explore Dumfriesshire: either on a relaxing break in idyllic surroundings; or an active outdoor activity holiday.

The space
Croftjane Cottage is a traditional farm cottage dating from the 1800's, but has recently been refurbished to a high standard, with ample storage for bikes/ fishing rods etc in the outside lockable laundry. It sits in an elevated position, with spectacular views down Nithsdale towards the Lake District fells. The cottage is reached by following the main drive towards the farmhouse and steading, but has its own garden and private parking.

Croftjane Cottage is fully centrally heated, with double glazing, and also has a wood-burning stove. The sitting room is furnished with a sofa & easy chairs and has a 40” smart TV with FreeSat & a DVD player. The well-equipped kitchen area has new worktops, electric cooker, fridge, microwave, dishwasher etc. A breakfast/reading room at the front of the cottage has spectacular views down the valley towards the Lake District fells. There is also a washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer in the separate laundry.
The master bedroom has a double bed and en-suite shower room; and there is a twin bedroom with built-in wardrobe. The bathroom has a bath and over-bath shower.
There are outside seating areas with table & chairs and a swing seat. A Kettle BBQ is provided and stored in the laundry. The self-contained garden contains a clothes-line and pegs are provided.
Mobile coverage is OK on most networks.
There is free wi-fi but please be aware that, according to the service provider, Croftjane is 'remote rural' and speeds are considerably slower than in urban areas (e.g. 3.5Mb download/0.4Mb upload). You may have a better mobile data signal on your mobile phone!
Parking is on the Cottage drive.

Where you’ll be

Penpont, Scotland, United Kingdom

Croftjane is a 300-acre farm on the Duke of Buccleuch’s Queensberry Estate in Dumfriesshire, SW Scotland. The Cottage has previously been home to stockmen and shepherds working at Croftjane.
The Cottage sits in an elevated position on the approach to the Farmhouse and steading, with spectacular views down the Nith valley towards the Solway Firth. On a clear day, Skiddaw and the northern Lake District Fells can be seen. We are at the edge of the Galloway Dark Sky Park, with fabulous star gazing on clear nights. Occasionally, the Northern Lights are visible.
There are excellent walks and cycle rides from the cottage, with bike hire available from Rik’s Bike Shed at Drumlanrig Castle & Country Park. Deer, rabbits, hare, pheasants, partridge and other wildlife can be seen in the fields around the cottage. Walking, cycling, horse riding, fishing and golf are all available nearby.
The village of Thornhill is two miles away, with hotels and restaurants, shops selling groceries, a chemist, tea rooms, takeaways, boutique clothes shops, bank, a traditional ironmongers and an art gallery at Thomas Tosh.
The cottage makes a good base from which to explore SW Scotland and there are plenty of activities available locally, from relaxed strolls in the countryside to adventurous activities suitable for thrill seekers.
