Other things to note
KEY SAFE
Your key will be waiting in the key safe positioned next to the front door.
WINDOWS
All windows are locked with the same key, which you will find hanging on the key pegs in the hall. There is another set of keys hanging on the bathroom pegs to the right of the window.
PARKING
Newlyn is an old fishing village; part of its charm is its quirky narrow streets but they weren't designed for cars and they do present challenges for parking. There are 6 free parking bays 20 metres from the house, and other free parking spaces in the nearby roads, which may be available. There are two paying car parks, one situated just below the house, and the other a 5-minute walk away. A week or so before your holiday begins, you will be provided with all the information you need about finding the house and using these car parks.
STEPS
Please be aware that this house has three floors: the top floor, the ground floor and the lower ground floor. There is a flight of stairs between each floor. Each flight is separated in two by a small landing, with 5-7 steps on either side of the landing. The stairs, while relatively steep, all have a handrail for support. Access from the garden to the side alley (Church Street) is by several narrow granite steps and these are very steep. (Young children should not be left unsupervised in the garden at any time.) There are different ways to move downhill from the house on foot however; if you leave the house by the front door, you are at street level and have a choice of roads leading to the harbour.
CORNWALL'S MICROCLIMATE
The far south- western peninsula of England has a unique microclimate thanks to the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. Conditions are typically milder, with subtropical features allowing for the growth of exotic palms and succulents. A key element of this microclimate, however, is its higher humidity, and it is well known that the interiors of Cornish buildings, particularly older properties like Sykes House, can be more prone to damp. We always advise maintaining maximum airflow within the house, particularly in the kitchen-diner on the lower ground floor, as this is the best way to counteract any unwelcome odours. Please unlock and open all windows, especially in the bathroom, and keep the kitchen door open as much as possible in the warmer weather.
