Podi Gedara is a beautiful, tropical, unique place. It is perfect for singles or couples. It consists of a luxurious one bedroom apartment located directly adjacent the sea with its own natural, safe swimming pool directly in front of it

The space

Snorkeling, beach fishing and surfing can also enjoyed directly in front of the apartment.

There are no residences on either side of the terrace and only one apartment above so it is completely private and undeveloped yet only a short distance to some of the best cafes and restaurants in the south. Two of these cafes and restaurants are within walking distance of Podi Gedara.

Guest access

Podi Gedara is one of kind. It is rare to find a place where you can watch an azure blue kingfisher perched on a bough only two metres from the window, a stilt fisherman plying his bamboo rod or the surfers catching the break directly in front of the house. Podi Gedara's kitchen shutters open directly onto this scene and the large adjoining stone paved terrace provides you with the perfect setting where you can watch these wonderful events from the sunlounges, dining table or, alternatively, take a more active role and swim in the sea itself.

Interaction with guests

Podi Gedara means, 'Little House' in Sinhala. It is a special place offering a unique experience on this part of the coast of Sri Lanka. There are few high quality, self contained, 1 bedroom apartments right on the sea along the southern coast that offer complete privacy and the addition of a number of optional luxury services that allows you to truly relax.
The coast in both directions of Podi Gedara offers exciting destination choices. Within half an hours drive you can head to Weligama
to see the hand painted fishing boats, roadside fish market or the unique stilt fishermen. Explore the many Buddhist temples
including Yatagala which is at least 2,000 years old and lies hidden amongst a granite boulder outcrop above the surrounding rice
paddies. Visit a coastal tea or cinnamon plantation and luxuriate with a decadent lunch overlooking the local winding river or surf
the popular breaks which are 'just down the road' from Podi Gedara.

If you are a 'foodie,' Podi Gedara is a great place to be as it is central to the best cafes and restaurants in the south. You can even walk along the beach from the apartment to several good cafes and restaurants but you will never take longer then 10 minutes by tuk tuk to get to any of the other good food /drinking options available in the region. Podi Gedara is the perfect base to explore the best assets of southern Sri Lanka. Our sister property, EKA is less than 2 kilometres down the road and we offer one of the best breakfast/brunches in town. So if you feel like a luscious breakfast or light lunch, just let us know or pop in.

Podi Gedara is a great little holiday home in the middle of the bustling Sri Lankan south coast. It's main selling points are its lovely, big balcony area overlooking the sea with its beautiful view and its fantastic host Andree. As a London couple in our twenties/thirties it was a great spot for a romantic getaway. It has a decent sized kitchen, which meant we could cook and eat on the balcony when we wanted to, and having our own sun lounge area meant we had a good amount of privacy. But I'd say Andree, who lives upstairs, is what makes this place great. She struck the perfect balance between being helpful and giving us advice on the best things to do while not being at all intrusive. Her recommendations were all spot on and it was great having someone to help book things and advise on transport etc. She was fab. The only drawbacks of Podi Gedara are that it's located on a main road and while the beach is lovely it's pretty rocky, so not great for going on walks/runs. While the flat isn't small it also isn't particularly spacious so it's not that inviting to spend lots of time in, but given the weather in Sri Lanka is so beautiful you want to be outside most of the time anyway so it's not a huge problem.

Podi Gedera was even more perfect than it looked. Andree was a fantastic host helping out with everything from grocery shopping, special restaurant recommendations to local yoga classes. We stayed 6 days and it made our trip- we wish we could have stayed longer!

Andree treated us with warmth and kindness during the time we were at her wonderful home, Podi Gedara, in Talpe. The house itself is beautifully located, as close to the beach as you could wish for, with it's own veranda which looks directly upon the ocean. After we had settled in, Andree asked for our itinerary and helped us organise our time in Sri Lanka. She went beyond being the ordinary host by organising many of our days and activities for us. We also visited her bed and breakfast, just a five minute TukTuk drive away, EKA for breakfast a couple of times. This is highly recommended as this breakfast was a feast not to be missed. We were treated to a huge fruit platter and delicious pancakes, whilst able to look out to the ocean, as EKA is also situated right on the beach. We would like to give a huge thank you to Andree for helping us make the most of our time in Sri Lanka. We managed to get the most out of the beautiful island, from venturing to rainforests to relaxing on beach. Jack & Emily

A 10-min tuk tuk ride from Galle Fort, Podi Gedara is in an absolutely stunning location, right on the beach - perfect for relaxing and watching life going on around you - stilt fishermen, crab collectors. Probably the best beach accommodation we've ever rented! The lagoons in front of the apartment is perfect for safe swimming, and even snorkelling. The apartment itself is modern, clean and comfortable, with a comprehensive set of info regarding eating, drinking and getting around the local area. Andree lives above the apartment, and was on hand to help us out with restaurant bookings, washing, etc. All-in-all a luxury hide-away located on a stunning part of Sri Lanka's south coast - we were very sad to leave!

We stayed recently for almost three weeks and couldn't fault it. I have written a review for Eka Beach, where we also stayed, which also includes the Podi Gedara review - so if you want to see a more detailed review, have a look at Eka Beach!

Andree is an excellent host. The appartement is clean and comfortable. And it's good, that there is a safe in the bedroom. Be warned: Yes, the appartement sits direktly at the ocean. So there is not only a stunning view, there is also a lot of noise. We don't recomment to sleep with open windows, also because natives may try to grab some of your belongings during the night. It happens with our mobile... But Andree was very nice, she invited us to an absolutely great breakfast. And if you want to now how to act and where to go in the village: ask Andree, her tipps are very helpful. All in all it was a nice start of our trip to Sri Lanka.

Podi Gedara is a fantastic spot right on the beach with stunning views and a natural swimming pool perfect for taking a dip. The apartment had everything we would need, and Andree was the perfect host. From helping us arrange transport from the airport, greeting us upon our arrival, to recommending great places to eat and things to do, she made sure our stay was relaxing and enjoyable. We were so sad to leave!

My day begins looking at the glistening sea in front of EKA. That always boosts my spirits. I often wonder while we're serving our sumptuous tropical platters what others are serving their guests for breakfast. What do Airbnb owners serve their guests in Russia for breakfast?
Part of the genuine joy of owning a place where guests come to stay is finding out what books they're reading, what music they like, hearing the different responses to the sights they see here and about the places they live.
I am trying to get to know Sri Lankan's better by improving my Sinhala skills but its usually easier for them to speak English than for me to try and make myself understood in Sinhala so my progress in language acquisition is slow.
I am principally Australian but was born in Canada and have lived in Malaysia and Dubai. I have great memories of these times and places but my heart is probably in Perth, Australia where my grown son and daughter reside.
