Balure is a traditional farm/croft on the friendly island of Lismore. If you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life then Balure Croft is the place for you. A traditional Croft house, it sits nestled in 100 acres of farmland with shoreside access to Balnagowan Loch. Set at the end of the road with stunning views all around means complete peace and tranquility. This Scottish island is located in the Inner Hebrides lying on Loch Linnhe at the southern end of the Great Glen.

The space
Balure Farm launched on Airbnb in 2020 and despite the challenges our first year brought, we look forward to welcoming guests again in 2021. Balure is a family home which has been in our family for five generations and is ideally placed for families and couples alike. The Isle of Lismore is a small, mega friendly island lying just north east of Mull. It measures approx 10 miles long by 1.5 miles wide and is ideal to explore on foot or by bike. Take in the views of the surrounding mountains of Ben Nevis, Ben Cruachan and the Morven hills which are all are breath-taking and stunning, alongside the rugged coastline which only an island can offer. This is both a truly unique experience and relaxing getaway. Lismore benefits from being a tranquil and completely unspoiled spot with the island steeped in history dating back to the 13th Century. It also boasts an Iron Age Broch, Tirefour Castle which can be seen from the property and is only a five min walk away where you can stand and obtain panoramic views over the island including Ben Nevis to the North and towards Oban in the South. If you are looking for stunning landscapes, rich wildlife and friendly Islanders then look no further!
The house is traditional in style and comfortably sleeps 6 people, it has its imperfections but is equally charming, offering privacy and seclusion. Enjoy the silence except for maybe the odd sheep or the barn owl which you might hear in the evenings.
The Accommodation:
Downstairs the accommodation comprises of a cosy living room, with an open fire, a well stocked kitchen/dining room, with hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, toaster bodum coffee jug and nespresso coffee machine. There is a downstairs bathroom and a small utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer.

On the upper floor there are three good sized double bedrooms, one with a king sized bed, one a double bed and single bed if required and the third bedroom has a small double bed, there is also a shower room and toilet upstairs.
Nearby there are some barns for general farm storage and it is unlikely they will be accessed during your stay. There is ample parking at the property and the open dutch style barn is useful for storing bicycles/kayaks etc The barn is well stocked with coal and logs to help yourself.
Well behaved dogs are welcome. There is an additional cleaning charge of £20 per dog per week, payable before check out. Please be aware there is no enclosed garden at Balure so please keep your dog on a lead for its safety and that of livestock.
Guest access is generally to all spaces, except the downstairs storage room, the outbuildings should not to be accessed on the grounds of safety.
Island Access and amenities:
The lovely island of Lismore is a complete get away from it all destination and is served well by two ferries.
There is an hourly passenger ferry from Port Appin which takes you approx 10 minutes ~ check Argyll and Bute website for details and timetable as Summer and Winter timetables operate.
To bring a car over you will need to get the car ferry from Oban. Booking with Calmac ferries is highly recommended as it can be busy during the summer months and high season. This ferry journey from Oban to Achnacoish on Lismore takes approx 50 minutes. Balure Croft is approx 4 miles ( 10 minute drive ) from the car ferry.
If traveling on the passenger ferry you can arrange to be collected and taken to the property contact :- who provide private hire service and island tours.
More detailed information on how to get here will be supplied once booking is confirmed. You might want to consider transporting over food etc as although there is a well stocked shop on the island but bear in mind it closes at 1pm on a Saturday, re-opening on Monday and is closed all day Sunday. The usual larger stores such as Tesco/Aldi/Lidl/Marks & Spencer are located in Oban or Fort William. Bike hire and lots of other local businesses... butcher, baker and candle maker all operate on the island from their private premises, an island of surprises around every corner!
The island also has a church ( St Moluag's Cathedral) named after Saint Moluag (d.592) a local village hall and a fantastic Island Heritage Centre/Cafe, both often have community events happening, for such a small island there is usually something going on, whether its a curry night or a ceilidh.
It may be wise to bring a good pair of walking boots or wellies along with some water proofs just in case. Otherwise take the plunge, escape for a week and enjoy the fresh air, the views always a feast for the eyes.

Hi, I’m lucky enough to be co-owner of a traditional farm Croft. My husband was brought up on the island and is fifth generation of farmers on the island. It’s a perfect spot to chill out, walk and just get back to nature. Frances is my co host and is always at hand should you need her.
