About this listing

I am offering the sofabed in my living room for those on a budget and 100% of proceeds go to charity. Mary's Meals is a charity based in Scotland. See below for more info on the charity. Staying here for one night will feed one child for over a year.

The space

The sofabed is available for one person only and for one night only. Guests pay for the pleasure of sleeping on the sofabed in my living room. Bedding and towels are provided. Guests can use the kitchen in the mornings to make their own breakfasts. I'm happy to provide tea/coffee and oats/cereal. Guests are also welcome to use my WiFi. There are plenty of blankets and hot water bottles for heat - we tend to not put the heating on in the Summer and only for an hour or two daily over the Winter. Please bear this in mind.

Guest access

Guests have access to the kitchen in the mornings only as I run it as a restaurant in the evening. I also ask guests to use the shower in the morning only too as it is shared with the restaurant guests in the evening.

Other things to note

Some info about the charity you will be supporting if you book with me.....

Mary’s Meals provides daily meals to chronically hungry children in a place of learning. In this way the hungry child is attracted to the classroom where they can gain a better future for themselves and their community.

This is an absolute fantastic experience that I would love to spend a whole afternoon to think and write about. I took the ferry from Oban and took the bus to Salen and because I cannot cycle I decided to hike to Ballygown. It took me four hours but but it was such an adventure. If I can make a metaphor, it is like watching one of those 4 hour masterpiece films. I passed so many cute farms, the shores, the paths with wild flowers on the sides. I just walked and meditated, thinking about nothing and everything. Also because the weather changes all the time, it was so fun to see the clouds and feel the little rain drops. When I passed the west coast (from Ulva ferry to ballygown), I saw amazing cliffs, it was magical. When I got to Ballygown, the weather became sunny. Jeanette and her family welcomed me as if I got back to my own home. Jeanette and her son Bruce helped me to set up the sofa bed in the living room, and I hanged out with Bruce for a little bit and I took a walk down to the beach. Jeanette is a beautiful woman inside and out! She is so hardworking, a great cook and a wonderful host! Her cuisine is unique, containing so much cares and loves! I ordered a local bus by phone on the next day (I think it is listed in the description) to return to Salen. An amazing experience! I will come back for sure!

Despite my late arrival (due to being distracted by beautiful Mull scenery) Jeanette was very welcoming. The wonderful aroma of haggis attacked my senses upon entering her home, and if it had not been so late, nor the restaurant closed, I would not have been able to resist a meal. Her hospitality was much appreciated, as is the gesture of donating takings to Marys meals - a very worthwhile cause.

The house is nicely located on the sunny side of Mull, in a very quiet area. Jeannette is a great host, as she is really helpful if you have questions.

Jeanette and Gary were incredibly welcoming into their home and very helpful from the minute I arrived. The room itself is their actual living room with a simply sofa bed to sleep on. It's not the most luxurious of rooms but it's charming and I had a good nights sleep in there. Considering the very reasonable price and the fact that they do this purely to raise money for charity it is well worth a visit! The location is great and if you have an hour or two to kill in the evening then ask Jeanette or Gary to point you in the direction of the waterfall. You won't be disappointed.

I had a lovely stay here. Nothing glamorous, but wonderfully authentic, homely, and memorable. I adored Jeanette's little restaurant, and the food was fantastic. Ballygown is not that easy to get to, but that also makes it special. If you can't stay, at least get to the restaurant, and give yourself time to get to know the west coast of Mull.
