Where you’ll be

Dunwich, Suffolk, United Kingdom

Dunwich is in a conservation area, enjoying views across the marsh and sea towards Walberswick and Southwold adjoining Dingle Marshes Nature Reserve, Dunwich Heath (cliff top is National Trust owned) and Minsmere Bird Sanctuary. Its an ideal location for enjoying bird watching, walking, riding, cycling and sailing etc. Today it is a small village with a large shingle beach, a Heath & Forest stretching to Westleton in one direction and Walberswick in the other.
During the Autumn months, come along to the Heath during October and November and enjoy deer safaris in the area.

There is a very attractive Coastal Path walk running paralell to the coast which runs for about 3 miles to Walberswick, famous for its crabbing competitions !

There is a Trail you can follow around the local sites including the Greyfriars Friary and Church ruins five minutes walk from the house.

We are less than 100 yards from a green flag beach.

Dunwich Museum tells the amazing story of a city lost to the sea through the narrative of its collection and the knowledge of its welcoming staff. The Dunwich story spans the first millennium to the present day.

Walk the dog at Dunwich Heath. Dunwich is part of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you love nothing more than a long walk beside the sea, a brisk stroll before lunch, cycling along quiet lanes, sailing iconic estuaries, or spending hours quietly watching some of the UK's rarest wildlife, the beautiful landscape of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB has it all.

Enjoy some of the region's best fish and chips and a pint of local ale. The Ship at Dunwich (one minutes walk) offers views across the marshes and sea, whilst you enjoy a delicious meal of local Suffolk produce and ales. It's dog-friendly too so after a long walk with your dog you can both enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation.

Just a short drive or an hours walk, from the village you will find RSPB Minsmere home of the BBC's Springwatch. Here you can spend a day spotting some the UKs rarest birds and wildlife including the Avocet, Bittern, Otter and Red Deer. There are many events to take part in too; with guided walks, bird box building workshops, 4x4 safaris and stargazing to name but a few.

Walberswick and Southwold are a two mile walk in land or along the beach at low tide.
The more adventurous can take the two minute rowing ferry over from Walberswick, to buy fresh fish from the fisherman's huts, and then on to Southwold which has plentiful shops and a wonderfully 'frozen in time' pier.

Aldeburgh is a short drive down the coast. Famous for many things - good food, great fish & chips, Aldeburgh Music, Maggi Hamblings' Scallop on the beach, as well as a vibrant art and music scene festival.

The historic Jubilee Hall built in 1887 and nestled on the seafront, is home to the Aldeburgh Literary Festival which takes place every March, as well as many other music, performance, theatre, festivals, talks, fairs and more throughout the year.

Snape Maltings, also nearby, is one of the world’s leading centres of music, where you'll find inspiring concerts and festivals throughout the year, from the flagship Aldeburgh Festival to the folk, world and jazz of the Snape Proms.

Southwold Golf Club is a traditional members golf club offering a warm welcome to all visitors. Golf has been played at Southwold for 130 years, one of the oldest Suffolk golf clubs. Its challenging nine hole heathland layout provides a test for all golfing abilities. The course is playable virtually all year round with greens that are widely regarded as amongst the best in East Anglia.
Aldeburgh Golf Club welcomes visitors to both the Championship and the River Course throughout the year.

"And for anyone who, given the choice between a literary talk in Aldeburgh and a round of golf, would guiltily opt for the latter, the Aldeburgh Golf Club is within easy reach and, as important, notably friendly and un-stuffy". Craig Brown.

Established in 1884, Aldeburgh Golf Club has two courses, the 18 hole Championship Course and the River Course, a delightful 9 holes more suitable for beginners and high handicap golfers.

Dunwich is known as the lost city of England. Dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, it once stood proud as the capital of the Kingdom of the Eastern Angles, at its mightiest matching 14th century London for size. It was a seat of power for the Anglo-Saxon bishops for centuries, an international port, and the Domesday book of 1086 puts the population at over 3000 as opposed to a population of eighty now.
