The space

John Joe's Farmhouse is named after its previous owner John Joe O'Sullivan or 'John Joe the Jobber' as all knew him. John Joe himself built the house of stone around the 1900 after he bought the farm. He was an industrious man and over the years he worked as a Cattle Jobber (buying and selling cattle in the locality), he also worked in constructing the underground service in London. He was an accomplished violin player and this house was host to many 'ball nights' throughout his years. A ball night was a big event when all the neighbours from all the nearby Parishes come together for a night of music, set dancing and storytelling.

Interaction with guests

Portmagee Seaside Cottages is a family run business. The family is made up of Elizabeth and Francie and our children Paul (studying Engineering in Galway), Aisling (living and working in Australia) and Roisin (living and working in Cork). We also have a farm with pedigree Charolais cows and ducks (which occasionally lay eggs which we are happy to share!). We have good local knowledge of all that is going on, we can recommend nice places to visit and know all the local boat and activity operators. In our spare time (which can be limited!) we are avid walkers. We would be happy to advise our guests on walking routes in the locality and time permitting might also be available to lead our guests on a walk.

Beautiful secluded farm house. Near the village of Portmagee which has two great pubs and a couple of small shops. Would definitely stay here again.

John Joe's Farmhouse is a lovely place to stay in a beautiful setting from which to explore the beautiful Ring of Kerry and the Atlantic Way. Comfortable and with everything we needed for a relaxing stay with lovely bedrooms and a great shower and large jacuzzi bath and a lovely fully equipped kitchen. The open fire is a wonderful treat at the end of the day with a plentiful supply of free wood and turf. Elizabeth is a lovely welcoming host and made our visit easy and hassle-free. There's lots of really helpful information at the farmhouse about places to visit, local walks, nearby shops for provisions etc. Everyone we met during our stay was friendly and helpful and on our last day we saw the local seals basking on the beach at Portmagee.

We had a lovely time at John Joe's farmhouse. Elizabeth was welcoming and was available if we needed anything - we had everything we needed, but nice to know she was just round the corner! The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom and kitchen were clean. The shower was really good - makes a difference on holiday! It was quite cold for May, so the peat that was provided for the fire was much appreciated. It was just the 2 of us on this trip, but it would be a great house for a bigger group - the large dining table would be very sociable. The location of the house is great - so peaceful. You can hear nothing but the river flowing, the birds singing, and the occasional cow lowing. Our only advice would be to bring cash if staying in and around Portmagee. There is a minimum spend in the shops on card, and we felt bad that we had no cash for tips in the restaurants, when the staff were so friendly!

Quiet, spacious and comfortable. Lovely old house with big cozy beds. Kids enjoyed the jacuzzi bath and the little stream out the front. Nothing was too fancy so we didn't have to worry about the kids playing. We had a fire going on a few nights as it was a bit chilly and because it's a treat to have big logs to burn! We didn't get good weather so we didn't explore the immediate area on foot but portmagee and Valentina is very near and quite beautiful to see. Elizabeth greeted us on arrival and was available should we have needed her but everything worked just fine so we had a trouble free stay.

We had a brilliant stay at John Joes cottage a fabulous location just outside the beautiful coastal village of Portmagee. So much to do see in the area, with the most spectacular views at every turn. The cottage was roomy and cosy with a enchanting little stream running through the front garden. The house had an old world feel that we lived with a modern bathroom and large kitchen extension. This is a fantastic place to use as a base to explore this wonderful part of the world and its run by the nicest people you could ever wish to meet 10/10

Had a great time at John Joe's farmhouse. Lovely and secluded so a car is a must. Beautiful view of the mountains and a lovely stream flows by the house. Really relaxing spot with some friendly animals nearby.

John Joe's is a haven of peace and tranquillity. The house was perfect for our family of 3, it ticked every box. The babbling brook added a bit of magic to the place. Elizabeth was a lovely host, she was quick to respond and looked after our every need. Perfect location and brilliant host. Thanks Elizabeth
