The space
Welcome to Toshi House where you have the luxury of privacy and space and the peace of mind that when you book you have the entire house for just you and your group to enjoy.

We welcome you to enjoy our home tucked away in a rural part of the beautiful Japanese alps in the authentic Japanese ski onsen town of Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture.

Toshi House has a sister house right next door called Sudo House if you are a larger group that wishes to stay close to each other
www.airbnb.com/h/sudohouseyuzawa

Toshi House and Sudo House are located in our private laneway that is only used by our guests, so parents have the peace of mind their little ones can play safely in the snow. Booking both Toshi and Sudo Houses keeps families and friends close together.

Located in a pocket of homes, Toshi House is conveniently positioned 650m to Gala Snow Resort, onsens, free town shuttle buses, a large supermarket, ski rental and only 900m from Onsen Street where a selection of over 40 restaurants await you at the train station on both West and East side of the station.

A typical Japanese home with some Western comforts added, the house was originally built by our neighbour a Japanese Master Builder. Our aim has been to add comfortable and practical features for our guests, while respecting the era of the house.

Toshi House is perfect for large groups holidaying together and can accommodate up to 10 guests in four washitsu (tatami rooms) bedrooms – two upstairs and two downstairs.

Toshi House has TWO toilets.

On the first level is the kitchen which is generously equipped with all you need for cooking for large groups and ideal if you have dietary or religious requirements or just want to relax and dine at home. The kitchen has a refrigerator/freezer, rice cooker, IH cook top, pots, frypans, toaster, microwave, cutlery/chopsticks, cooking utensils, plates, cups and coffee mugs etc. The kitchen, dining and lounge are open plan so that your group can dine, cook and enjoy meals together.

There is a large dining table to enjoy meals and after dinner card games and comfortable chairs in the lounge to relax in after a big day on the slopes.

Also on the first level is the Japanese Unit Bath with the bathtub, area to wash and a shower hose if you wish to shower. Outside the shower room is the wash basin with mirror.

There are TWO separate toilets (please note there is only one shower room in the house which is typical in rural regions of Japan however guests enjoy bathing in a traditional onsen - Yama no yu which is a 2 minutes walk up the road).

There is a washing machine that is complimentary for guests to use, and we supply the washing detergent.

Finally on the first level are the two washitsu (tatami room) bedrooms.

On the second level are two washitsu (tatami room) bedrooms.

One of our priorities is to ensure our guests sleep comfortably. The beds are comfortable futon style of bedding with western pillows. There are no western beds.

🌡️Heating at Toshi House

*Please read and understand our heating setup before booking*

🌡️ Modern Kerosene Heaters – The property is equipped with high-quality Japanese individual kerosene fan heaters featuring built-in safety systems, including carbon monoxide sensors and automatic shut-off if the units are moved or compromised.
🌡️ Timer Operation – For safety, heaters operate on 3-hour timers, as recommended by the manufacturer. After 3 hours, they can be restarted.
🌡️ Easy Refills – Guests will receive step-by-step photo instructions before check-in on how to refill each heater’s kerosene tank. Kerosene is provided.
🌡️ Guest Safety First – Your safety is our top priority. All equipment provided meets strict safety standards.

The four bedrooms, kitchen, lounge, and dining areas are each fitted with individual kerosene heaters. This is the most common and widely used method of heating in the Snow Country region, trusted by locals and accommodation providers for decades.
These heaters warm rooms quickly and are both safe and highly effective. They can be used overnight; however, for added safety, each unit is equipped with an automatic shut-off feature that turns the heater off after three hours, however the heaters can be turned on again straight away.

Toshi House has a pond at the rear which is home to 50+ gold fish, however the pond is not only home to the fish but serves as snow control for Toshi House with the snow falling from the roof into the pond. Don’t be concerned about the fish as they swim under part of the house to stay warm and safe. You will hear movement on the roof as the snow shifts and moves then falls into the pond which to me is exciting to hear as you really feel like you are in Snow Country!

Toshi House is located in our private laneway accessed only by our guests staying at either Toshi or Sudo Houses. This gives our guests the luxury of parking their car conveniently outside the front of the houses which is safe, secure & free of charge.

We feel humbled and proud of our reviews and are grateful to our guests who have spent the time to thoughtfully review their stay with us at Toshi House. Please feel free to read them and contact me with any questions you may have.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire house. There is no-one else living at the house and there is no sharing with strangers.

Other things to note
Bedding are futons with western pillows. There are no western beds.

🌡️Heating at Toshi House - It is important that guests read & understand the style of heating before booking.
🌡️The kerosene heaters provided at the property are modern high-quality Japanese units equipped with built-in safety features, including carbon monoxide sensors and automatic shut-off mechanisms if the units are moved or compromised.
🌡️For safety reasons the heaters are on 3 hour timers as per the manufacturer. They are designed to "chime" or play a melody when they are turning off as part of their safety and operational notification. Guests are able to turn the heater on again as the heater chimes for another 3 hours.
🌡️Guests are required to refill the individual heater tanks with kerosene. Guests will be sent photo instructions before check-in on how to fill the individual heater tanks with kerosene which we provide for our guests.
🌡️Guest safety is a top priority and we take care to ensure all equipment provided meets appropriate safety standards.

🚽Toilet - There are TWO toilets located on the 1st floor at Toshi House which are separate to the shower room and wash room.

Bathroom - There is 1 shower/bath at Toshi House located on the 1st level.

Mountain Bugs - Due to Toshi House being located in the beautiful Japanese mountains we are challenged by mountain insects particularly stink bugs. These bugs are harmless & are only seeking warmth and manage to find their way into homes/hotels/ryokans & other buildings.
While we do our best and ensure no stink bugs are in the house when guests check in unfortunately some bugs may still enter or may emerge from their dormant state during your stay looking for warmth.
We spray the house regularly and use other methods to control the bugs however, we are dealing with nature that has existed in the area for a long time and it is difficult/impossible to eliminate them 100%.
Should you see a stink bug please gently dispose of it by using a tissue and throwing it out the window, sticking it to the brown tape provided or by bug spray which is located under the kitchen bench.
We do sincerely apologize for the bugs presence & while we do everything within out means we are dealing with one of natures tiny mountain creatures. We appreciate your understanding in this matter. Thank you.

Where you’ll be

Yuzawa, Niigata, Japan

Find out why Yuzawa Town is so special and all that it has to offer at this website yuzawa-town

What is so special about Yuzawa?

Gosh where do I begin!!

If you are after a true Japanese experience and deep powdery snow then look no further.  Yuzawa is a traditional town with local Japanese residents going about their daily routines. You don’t see many Westerners around town.

Yuzawa offers more than just skiing and boarding. If you feel like a ski/board free day or the weather isn’t behaving, Yuzawa has you covered.  You can:

•Book a FREE tour to learn how sake is made from Yuzawa’s local Sake Brewery or pop into their showroom for free tasting
•Soak and relax in an onsen
•Don’t feel like a body onsen?  Why not try a foot onsen at Inamoto Hotel or Hatago Ryokan both on the West side of the station and both are FREE!!
•Take a browse at the food and souvenir stalls at Echigo Yuzawa train station
•Pop into CocoLo (best described as a Japanese form of a delicatessen) behind the food and gift stalls at Echigo Yuzawa train station (open every day)
•Try the sake vending machines at Ponshu-kan at Echigo Yuzawa train station
•Feeling peckish – enjoy a delicious lunch at one of the many restaurants along Onsen Street on West side of Echigo Yuzawa train station and don’t forget to check out East side of the station for eating options too.
•The great thing about Yuzawa is how close and easy  it is to get to Tokyo so if you feel you need a city fix jump on a shinkansen and explore Tokyo for the day.

Yuzawa Town has a population of just under 8,000 and is the most easily accessed ski area to Tokyo using the Shinkansen train arriving at Echigo Yuzawa station in only 77 minutes (200km from Tokyo).

With many people now on the search for new slopes to explore Yuzawa is definitely Japan’s best kept secret (Shhhhh!!  Don’t Tell).  This ski town will certainly not disappoint with over 14 ski resorts with high falls of deep powdery snow. During the weekends many Japanese jump on a train from Tokyo to ski/board for the day then during the week the slopes become quieter.
