Lilac Cottage is the perfect rural retreat, ideal for ramblers (the West Mendip Way passes the back garden), nature lovers and anyone who fancies a reviving break.
Ravishing views across the Somerset Levels to the distant Quantocks and the sea. And the best sunsets.
Wells cathedral, in England’s smallest city, is ten minutes away by car and even better by footpath.
Every care has been taken to combine comfort and visual delight.
Up to six people. Dogs welcome too.
Wifi/broadband now terrific!

The space
Lilac Cottage is a newly-restored former farm cottage in the Mendip Hills, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. Apart from sheep and cows it's very quiet. There are more walks in the hills straight from the garden than anyone could ever tire of. This is striking countryside in all seasons.
PLEASE NOTE: Lilac Cottage has very good broadband and Wifi. It took us more than a year of hard struggle to persuade BT to put up a couple of poles and connect the cottage to the network. This finally happened too late for our first guests pre-Covid alas. Now at last Lilac Cottage is part of the fibre-optic network that serves Wookey Hole.

Where you’ll be

Wookey Hole, England, United Kingdom

Britain's loveliest cathedral, with it's world-famous west front, lies in the next valley in England's smallest city, Wells, which also boasts a 14th century palace with battlements and moat, and Europe's oldest residential street. Many cinema and TV costume dramas are shot in Wells, which was the setting for the film Hot Fuzz. Time your stay right and you could become an extra.
A 10-minute stroll in the opposite direction gets you the famous Wookey Hole caves. Cheddar Gorge shouldn't be missed.
There's good food and beer within an easy stroll at Wookey Hole Inn. Wells has many cafes and restaurants. For the best lunch and dinner go to Goodfellows, which specialises in seafood. Lovers of Greek food will be delighted with the Taverna, also in Wells.
A popular market is held every Wednesday and Saturday
