The space

This B & B is beautifully situated high in the village with a fantastic view. The authentic character of the house has been preserved but the beds and bathrooms are very comfortable and luxurious. The extensive breakfast with fresh fruits and special dishes are praised on TripAdvisor. The master bedroom is for two people and is based upon the price (115 euro). The third, fourth, fifth and sixth person pays 35 euro per night incl. Breakfast per person.

Guest access

The colorful, sunny and shady garden is accessible for guests. Spacious rooms with a living area are intended to make you come to rest on your holliday. The rooms are large enough to you feel on vacation even on a rainy day.

Interaction with guests

Some guests find it enjoyable together to drink a glass of wine together in the sunny garden, other guests are rather more on their own. We respect that.

The neighbourhood

It is recognised as one of the most beautifull villages in France. The village is home to the largest monolithic church in Europe and is certainly worth a visit. Due to documentaries on French and English television between January 2013 and September 2013, the church received 57 thousand visitors.
The centre of the village has a lovely square with terraces and attractive restaurants where you can sit and relax, drink a coffee, enjoy a three-course-lunch or dinner in the evening. Romantic small streets with typical French stone houses give the village its special, picturesque character.

The region’s most known product is Pineau; a famous aperitif, similar in production to cognac.

Saintes and Bordeaux are beautiful ancient cities which still have remnants of their Roman past. Both cities are worth a visit.

Angoulême with its beautiful old centre is forty-five minutes from here, situated on a plateau and on the river Charente. Cartoon characters are everywhere in the city, as this is the city of cartoons. It has five museums and an art school for illustration, video-games and interactive media.

Saint Emilion lies in the heart of the Bordeaux-wine region. A historical village to visit and of course the place to go if you want to buy some great wines to take home with you.

A bit further away is Dune Pilat, on the Atlantic coast. Here you can find the highest dunes of Europe. A great place to go on a warm summer’s day to sunbathe and swim.

If you want to stay closer to Aubeterre, the river Dronne is the place where the locals swim. At different places there are small beaches, often with a small bar where you can have a bite to eat and something to drink. For a more active day; try our Electric Bikes to explore the countryside or take a walk in the countryside or woods which are all in the immediate vicinity.

Aubeterre has the largest monolithic church (St. Jean) in Europe and is certainly worth a visit. “Headset Tours” are available in several languages.
The Eglise St. Jacques (12th century) with its beautiful façade should not be missed either when visiting Aubeterre.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne has two beautiful churches. One of them, église monolith St. Jean, is the largest and most unique in Europe and a visit more than worthwhile.
A maze of old streets with many shops: it's good to be in an atmosphere of times gone by. The square in the center has both terraces and restaurants and in the summer there are regular musical evenings.

Getting around

Bergerac and Bordeaux airports are used by most guests but the train to Angoulême is also a favorite.
If you come by car, there is parking at the top of the road. We help with luggage / suitcases. On your navigator type in: Rue Pierre Very, 28. , the B & B. is opposite no 28, on a small park "Square Gaillardon"

Other things to note

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. A village in the lower part of the Charente departement, on the border with the Dordogne.

France is divided into regions. The regions are subdivided into departments, and these again into ‘arrondissements’.
Aubeterre is located in the Poitou-Charentes region in the department of Charente (16) and in the Angoulême.
Poitiers is the region’s capital.
The other three departments of Poitou-Charente are Charente-Maritime, Deux Sevres and Vienne.

The village, with its narrow winding picturesque streets, is build in the form of an amphitheatre, following the slope of the village’s cretaceous bedrock. Many cretaceous fossils have, and can still be found, in this area. The name Aubeterre originates from ‘Alba-Terra’ which means White Ground, and reflects the white chalk stone that most of the houses are build of. The village is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. Out of a total of around 32 thousand villages, this is not a bad ranking!
The village has around 420 permanent residents. Desite this, there are about ten restaurants in the village. Pizza, cupcakes, crepes, or traditional French cuisine; almost everything is available in the village. If you like ice-cream, there is a wide variety from ‘Glace Artisanal’ to Mövenpick, we have it all in Aubeterre.
The river offers a small beach, adjacent to the camping, for sunbathing and swimming. Canoes are available for hire at the canoe-club. You can explore several miles upstream, with an easy paddle back to town at the end of the day.

Chambres d'Hotes Gaillardon offers comfort in spacious apartments situated in an authentic French setting. Especially in the Valley Room the view is great and different every day. The breakfast 'Versailles' with lots of fresh fruit, hot quiches and other French delicacies is a good start of yet another wonderful day in this southern part of the Charentes region.
The price of the room is 115 euros for two people. Each additional person pays 35 euros extra.

Thank you so much to Hanjo and Nina for such a wonderful weekend! We stayed at their B&B for our friends wedding and from the moment we booked Nina went out of her way to look after us. As we were arriving at lunchtime, Nina was very kind and recommended and then booked us into lunch at Creperie La source(great place) which was very much needed. The B&B is absolutely beautiful, set in a perfect spot moments from the village square with lovely views. From the moment we arrived Hanjo made us feel at home and cooked us the most delicious breakfasts each morning. We were in the Valley apartment which was perfect for 3 of us! Complete with nespresso machine and fridge/ glasses etc it was just what we needed! Thank you so much Nina and Hanjo for such a delightful stay!

The best Airbnb premises we have stayed at. Our hosts were so welcoming and friendly. The food was superb. Views fantastic. Accommodation great. Our hosts went far and beyond what we expected even giving lifts in their two cars when we struggled finding a taxi. Amazing..

From the moment we arrived, Nina and Hanjo made us feel very welcome. The beds were exceptionally comfortable with lots of good pillows and the bed linen was of good quality. Staying in their home was a privilege and they shared their beautiful garden with us. The breakfasts provided were first class, locally sourced and if possible organic fruit and produce. Amazing hospitality from our hosts. Throughout our stay they were at hand to advise of local events, places to visit.... and made reservations in local restaurants to ensure we had the best possible stay. We even had our laundry done for us before we came home. Happy memories to treasure forever. Thank you Jules, Peter and Sue

We couldn't quite believe our luck when we arrived at Nina's house, it was just too pretty to be true! From charming rooms, stunning views, a pair of friendly pups and even some complimentary local pinault, our short stay was very, very sweet. Nina's husband Hanjo was a wonderful and generous host and the array of freshly prepared breakfast items (served in the garden) certainly eased our wedding hangovers! Thank you so much Hanjo! Xxx

Welkom in Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
