House Rules

This is a non-smoking house, and it welcomes folks who are gentle and respectful. Being off-the-grid requires a bit more mindfulness, and rewards you with the peace and beauty of a private and undeveloped setting.
Also, I consider my place suitable for children, assuming that parents will be responsible in keeping their children safe on stairs, and around the wood stove!
There are bins in the shed for recyclables, & a container for compost in the kitchen, to minimize trash.
Feel free to make use of spices, teas, condiments. If you use a generous amount of one thing or use it up, please replace or leave a note alerting me to what needs replacing!
YOU PROVIDE YOUR OWN SHEETS AND TOWELS! or let me know if you need them provided, and you pay a $25 use fee for 2 people, add $10 per person after that. (I don't have laundry on site, so it is both my time and laundromat cost!)
Please be able to make a reasonable arrival time (ie; not late at night) as I will be meeting you to walk you through the off-the-grid routine! Many thanks, Karen

You must also acknowledge
Must climb stairs - one flight up to sleeping lofts, one flight to shower downstairs

Karen's retreat home was a peaceful, healing, and "unplugged" getaway from the NYC to celebrate my wedding anniversary. We highly recommend staying at Karen's. Karen is very accessible and communication was a breeze with her. She is also attentive to your needs (She took her cat with her for the weekend, since my husband is allergic.). The retreat space is surrounded by trees, flowers, gardens, and hiking paths. Inside the house is exactly what Karen described in her description and her artistic and creative touches are very inspiring (along with her eclectic array of books!). We had several relaxing nights outside by the fire pit and enjoyed the scenic views during the day. Although, Karen's homes feels remote, the town of Bethel is lively. Bethel offers great food/restaurants, many opportunities to hike and do outdoor activities. The people are friendly and there is no traffic. Highly recommend Karen's retreat space if you're looking to get away from city life to slow down, spend time outside, and still enjoy small town life.

Karen’s house was exactly what we needed. A great place for people who want to de-stress and spend a little bit of time off the grid. You get the whole, huge three-storey house to yourself (apart from a very sweet elderly Maine Coon cat) with a few a acres of land around. We decided to do a yoga and a meditation session with her in her downstairs studio, and as newbies she was a great guide. We had some of the best sleep of our trip as the area was so peaceful and quiet. Karen was super friendly and anything we needed she was happy to provide. She also mailed an item to us that we left behind. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.

We loved our stay at Karen's home! It was such a restful and relaxing experience to get away from it all. We enjoyed hiking on some of the beautiful trails nearby and step falls, a beautiful waterfall with wading pools. Highly recommend the restaurant farmers market and taps in bethel for great sandwiches and breakfast. Karen has a beautiful property which is beautifully landscaped and she has a little vegetable garden which she invited us to pick lettuce and tomatoes from. She was also so kind to let us to try her home brewed kombucha. All in all our stay was rejuvenating and a perfect escape from Boston. We hope to return!

We loved how quiet and peaceful this cabin was; it was exactly what we needed. It's a beautiful, welcoming space.

Simply beautiful! Karen's home is in a beautiful location in perhaps the most gorgeous mountain town. My boyfriend and I loved the view so much through the downstairs windows that we actually ended up sleeping downstairs on a makeshift fort! The town of Bethel is trendy and cute- a grocery store, and a few places to eat. We decided to cook all of our meals at home, using the garden on the property. Lots of places to hike close by- we went into the White Mountains and picked wild blueberries at the summit- magical. Highly recommended!

Karen's home is the perfect place to truly relax. Getting in touch with nature, and living off the grid was replenishing. Her home is special and filled with character and charm. So many places to find a spot to sit and relax both inside and outside. Our daughter and dog had a great time! Karen provided wonderful recommendations and was very attentive during our entire stay.

I'm so glad you enjoyed yourselves so much! I think the busier people's lives are, the more the 'unplugged' experience is appreciated...

Karen's place is unbelievably open, cozy, and peaceful. Super clean and brimming with charm, and we loved that it was eco-friendly. Karen is the perfect host -- she has great recommendations, is lovely to chat with, and gave us a thorough explanation of the house. What's great about the location is that it's tucked away and secluded, but also a quick 10 minute drive to the downtown area (best of both worlds). Close to great hiking as well. Highly recommend! :)

Well, I was charmed by you both, and if you came again, I would stay somewhere close by, so we could share a bit more time! I'm so so glad that you enjoyed your stay.

I teach yoga and am also a photographer and wanna-be writer! I love sharing my home with others, & having so many opportunities to meet warm & interesting people, from all over the world. I enjoy the seasons & the changing activities that go along with them: bicycling, swimming, gardening, skiing, reading, cooking, deep discussions, dancing, meditating, birdsong, being with dear friends and family, and all manner of critters!
I created this home with lots of love, & truly get pleasure from sharing it. You will have it to yourself though, & I look forward to hearing about your adventures.
Wishing you and yours abundant goodness in life and love, Karen
