We provide your safe clean water:
We pay for Government water & we also catch pure rain water from roof gutters & have backup storage with 25,000 litres tank, not in the sun, (then it passes through our 3 stage filter purifier). Our water tanks & filters are cleaned & replaced regularly.
We do not pump water from the ground, as most do, as that is where every sewer discharges into, on Koh Samui (& most of Thailand) ... every house & resort & restaurant toilets pipe to their own "Septic sewage tanks" that discharge underground, next to their water well/shaft intake.
TOILET FLUSHING BACKUP
When Koh Samui has electric cut out (mainly with big rain), we have a gravity fed tank piped separately to feed all toilets, 24 hours.
FAQ's
"Frequently asked questions"
... just tips for niggling worries
... but not worry too much !!!
RESPECT is No1
Show gratitude in Thailand at every opportunity.
Bow head with hands together.
MAN says CUP ("khrub") at end of almost every sentence (Thank you cup ... yes please cup).
LADY says KA (1 juice ka).
Thai are very proud, honorable people & have the highest respect for King, Buddha & Thailand.
Thai TV does not show (blurred out) drugs, violence, alchohol, smoking, sexy pics, swearing. Porn, drugs & gambling, organized prostitution etc are 100% illegal.
Most Thai people are fun, happy & enjoy a respectful joke.
DOGS (& all nature & wildlife)
Thailand is equally respectful for all life. Dogs have full freedom & usually just seek your affection & respect, as you walk through their territory that they protect.
Offer the back of your hand for them to sniff & even bend down or squat, also:-
- soft words "Hello Puppy Dog"
- soft eye contact & also look away from dog to show you are happy with him/her (good tips for snakes etc too, but not offer your hand).
For advanced dog greeting, try licking your lips (once), while doing a long double eyes blink & small bow your head, then smile ... ... ... really it works.
(up to you to also try this late night at the girly bars).
Dog on dog greetings style ... best not to copy that sniffing.
Kinky & maybe a law against that.
TOILETS - no paper (or ... ) please.
Basically, your waste is piped to a hole in the ground ... so toilets can only handle what has been digested & passed through you body, to go back into the ground (via a Septic seepage tank).
Otherwise, blockages occur, & a big expensive smelly truck has to visit & pump out.
ICE IN DRINKS
Ice is usually 100% clean & safe on Koh Samui. ALL ice is made from purified water & delivered to EVERY restaurant, cafe, bar & even street carts, by a reliable ice manufacturer .. enjoy!
FOOD / MEAT / FISH HYGIENE
Thailand street cart cooking (& restaurants too) often have "FRESH" food (meats etc) without refrigeration/ice & rarely cause upset stomachs nor busy toilet activities.
Food is typically bought fresh & is very healthy for us, if consumed that day, compared to the western world of aged food that has been refrigerated for many days or weeks.
Maybe a little chilli spices to help the digestion process , definately mixed with plenty of steamed rice & 2 or 3 glasses of water.
Best to look & smell test food before eating (& before being cooked if possible).
We worry about "Deep Fried" meat if cooked in old oil, not fresh & clean oil. Wok pan fried, steamed or BBQ is safer & healthier.
Any grumbly tummys (or diarrhea), then immediate 1st step is take 2 Carbon capsules (for a few days), from Family Mart, 7/11 or Pharmacy, & more water.
Anything major .. see any Pharmacy / Chemist.
TEATH CLEANING
& DRINKING WATER
Best to always use bottled water.
But our Villas do have very clean filtered government & roof water, and we always clean our teeth in OUR tap water & never had any sick from our water (fingers crossed). I have been sick elsewhere, with smelly water.
However, I also do a final mouth rinse with bottle water & then drink a cup of water just for good health.
We buy filtered bottles (20 Litres) of water, delivered weekly & keep you topped up, free for you to be safe & happy (best not to swallow our tap water either, it is fine for washing in kitchen & laundry).
Government piped water is mostly ok, but it does come from 2 reservoirs / lakes on Samui, which obviously gets catchment runoff from all local land, roads, drains, etc (chemicals?). We have seen a man swimming & washing his buffalo in the Chaweng lake!
ROADS ... Motorbike accidents
Many many many ... careful careful ... & wear helmets (buy or borrow our larger safer helmets).
Koh Samui - busy for experienced bike riders only.
- better for taxis/songtow or bike taxi or rent a car.
- "NaviGo" App is great for Taxis.
Koh Phangan - quieter & safer, but still pot holes etc, inexperienced (or wobbly drunk) riders/drivers to take extra care with.
SHOES / THONGS OFF
Most shops, homes etc .. leave shoes outside. They bring in dirt & germs. Thai tradition to have a clean floor that you can eat your dinner from ... literally, Thai style dining & relaxing, & is better for your back, than a chair.
STINGERS & SHARKS
Relax & enjoy your swim.
No sharks.
Very rare stingers (apparently use vinegar & visit Dr).
