Greater London, England, United Kingdom

Clapton is made up of two areas, Upper Clapton and Lower Clapton, divided by the Lea Bridge Roundabout in the London Borough of Hackney. As with the other areas in Hackney, it has undergone a major renovation in recent years, thanks to the London 2012 Olympics. It is now considered to be one of the more photogenic districts within Hackney, due to the peaceful and green atmosphere. Clopton (meaning “farm on the hill”) as Clapton was called until the 18th century, was known as a straggling hamlet along the road.
Springfield Park in Upper Clapton is a lovely area which goes down the hill towards the River Lea and the White House (Grade II listed) is home to a café and a rangers’ station in the middle of the park. Aside from the trees and greenery available here, there are 5 tennis courts, a cricket pitch, rugby fields and football pitches so perfect if you are a sport fanatic. There is also Springfield Marina where you can park your narrowboat and Lea Rowing Club on the other side of the bank. Lower Clapton is not without its greenery with Clapton Pond and the late Georgian period Clapton Square where pretty Georgian terraces faces onto the Square. It is also home to Hackney Downs as it is technically part of Lower Clapton but many locals have said that it should be an area of Hackney in its own right.
Both parts of Clapton are heavily influenced on its residents, this is shown through many shops and restaurants selling Caribbean, Asian and Turkish produce. Whilst Clapton is not known for its shopping, it does still have independent shops and a couple of good local markets at the weekend.
