The space
The Old Forge is an attractive and cosy cottage, dating back to the 14th Century, when it was the village blacksmith. It has been sympathetically restored and decorated to retain some of the original features whilst offering modern comfort and convenience. The kitchen is recently installed with gas oven, hob and grill, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer. There is a small terraced area by the front door. The cottage nestles in the heart of Bishops Tawton, a small village three miles outside of Barnstaple, along the River Taw. Barnstaple is a livley market town which has a regular market, many restaurants pubs and cafes and plenty of shops. There are delightful walks on the doorstep, down the beautiful River Taw or up Codden Hill with its extensive views of Exmoor, Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor and of course the sea. The Tarka Trail offers cyclists and walkers miles of pleasure and can be accessed easily from the cottage on foot. Within 30 minutes drive of The Old Forge, there are the famous North Devon beaches to suit every taste, including Croyde Beach for surfers. Golfers are well catered for with the local Portmore Club (2 miles) or Saunton Golf Club, Westward Ho! links and many more within a short drive. A 2 minute walk from the cottage within the Village of Bishops Tawton, the Chichester Arms is a 15th century thatched pub offering excellent food for lunch or dinner (booking essential) and there are many local restaurants who will also deliver.
There is ample off street parking to the front of the cottage.

Other things to note
There is a travel cot in the cupboard under the stairs with bedding, if required.
If the foldaway bed is required, we will place it in the large bedroom at the end of the landing with the bedding but leave you to decide which room you would like to put it up in.

The central heating is on an automatic programme. If you are too hot, turn the radiators down or off using the thermostatic control on individual radiators. If too cold check that all the radiators are at the maximum setting on the thermostatic controls. If this is still not warm/cool enough, please find the operating thermostat for the boiler in the hall by the door to the kitchen. Lift the lid gently from the bottom to reveal the programming buttons. Move the sliding button on the right to the ‘man’ (manual) position and replace lid. Use the + or – buttons to increase or decrease the temperature. Please remember to return the slider button to ‘Auto’ before retiring to bed.

Please feel free to make use of the log burner. We will leave logs, kindling and firelighters for you to make the first fire.

We encourage you to recycle wherever possible. There is a green caddy and biodegradable caddy liners in the cupboard under the sink for all food waste. Deposit your full caddy liners in the larger green caddy to the left of the front door. There you will also find a green plastic bag for recycling paper, a brown plastic bag for recycling cardboard, a black crate for glass, tins and plastic waste and a black bin for all non-recyclable waste.
