Glamping & hiking in the nature of North Bali, close to where the Balinese families live.
This intimate home grew around an antique rice barn. The inside & outside of the house are seamlessly connected. In the garden there is space for tents, hanging mats. Another accommodation can be attached when you are with more people.
It's located in the hills above Singaraja, attached to rice fields. Down the Balinese sea, behind volcano tops. A beautiful gorge with waterfalls is on walking distance.

The space

This place is especially for people that like being outdoors and in nature.
This private property is 2.000 m2 and all is at your disposal. A part of it is still used as an rice field. Despite of the house, there is an outdoor bathroom, a roof covered studio and parking place, a swimmingpool and an Balinese resting place in the garden/balé. In the garden are possibilities to hang your mat or rent a tent.
If you look for more beds or prefer a more spacious bedroom, then there is a separate house 50m. uphill in the street (rumah tamu - see the picture).
It belongs to Pondok Apsari and has 2 bedrooms and a bathroom with hot water. It is only rented out as extra space for guests of Pondok Apsari who may use all the services of Pondok Apsari. So the number of guests can be expanded.
This requires an additional fee.

Guest access

The whole property all is at your disposal.
For the number of guests and places to sleep different options are possible, both indoors and outdoors.

Interaction with guests

We try to tune on the wishes and requirements of the guests. Tour staf family lives next doors and takes care of household services cleaning, garden and pool. On request we can arrange daily breakfast, lunch and diner (even gluten free), but you must be ordered in advance. We also offer all kind of tours, wonderful hikes and activities.

On my first visit to Bali in 2008 I fell in love with this place which was a rice field. I'm a Dutch artist and creating this house and swimming pool are my biggest pieces of art so far.

Other things to note

We are happy to offer you to enjoy this real authentic part of Bali and being so close to the overwhelming nature. We can discuss with how many people you like to come, because we can expand it in- or outdoors.

We can offer you all kind of activities and tours in the North of Bali. When you booked this place, we will send you the information.

Because of the hight (330m above sea level) in the night it's a bit cooler then near the sea. And we do not suffer much from mosquitoes.

This is truly a stunning space with peace and charm in abundance. Ji and Dayu (housekeepers) really looked after us, they are super friendly and it was great to spend some time with them. Beware that prices are bit steep in the villa menu. Average meal price is almost double of that in the nearby restaurant and they will charge you for each coffee and tea extra (!). Luckily there are some local shops just within a few minutes walk, where you can buy basics. Same goes with transport & guide services, but you can always ask around in the village, virtually anyone is a guide there. All in all it was a wonderful experience we had at that place. Thanks!

Response from Karien:
Sorry Anna to hear that you found the meals to expensive. point 1: In fact we are not a restaurant and this is only a special service of our and we miss the scale of economy a normal restaurant has. point 2: At this point in time we still were experimenting with the menu how we can satisfy our guests with good honest food at an acceptable price and still be profitable. Future guests will be provided with a menu list and prices. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian.

Quiet, secluded, scenic! The rice barn is everything you could dream of in a romantic getaway. Unfortunately the dream was interrupted by our disgruntled host Ji. We've addressed our issues with the owner Karien and can only hope future travellers don't have the same rude awakening.

Pondok Apsari was the quiet and scenic getaway we were looking for after our time in Canggu and Ubud. We're so glad we made it up south and experienced a different perspective of Bali. Gi and staff were incredibly welcoming and his breakfast crepes and smoothies were a delight! We were able to hire a scooter through Gi to explore nearby Singaraja and Lovina and explored the nearby waterfalls with Gi's brother which was a highlight of the trip. There is also a nearby restaurant, Shanti which is a couple of minutes up the road via scooter which we enjoyed for dinner otherwide GI can provide food upon request. As already described on previous reviews visitors to Pondok Apsari need to embrace the 'wilderness' feel to this place in order to enjoy its uniqueness. If local critters and the sounds of wildlife bother you this place probably isn't up your alley however if you're up for a unique experience away from the luxuries of a resort you won't regret staying at Pondok Apsari.

Incredible view and amazing sunrises from the pool in this charming nook in the hills near Aling Aling. Plan a treck with Ji to the waterfalls and blue lagoon, you won't be disappointed

The house of Karien is phenomenal, better than the photos show, everything is very clean and is a very comfortable house with a lot of charm. The area is quiet and you are 20 minutes from the beach area with plenty of restaurants. Our stay was very good.

A fantastic place! We had a truly memorable time. A beautiful and unique house surrounded by padi fields and mountains. Lots of space around complemented by a lovely garden. Ji is an excellent assistant and is always there to help. If you're comfortable with animals, Jaga the dog and Beach the cat are such darlings! Would highly recommend a trek with Jaga! The nearest attractions (beach, spas, bars etc.) are quite a distance away, so scooter rental is necessary if you want to venture out on your own. No issues with cleanliness or basic amenities. A dip in the pool feels great after a day out in the hot sun. 101% recommended! Thank you so much Karien, Ji, Jaga and Beach. p.s. Karien/Ji, please give Jaga and Beach a nice big hug for us ;)

I am a Dutch sculptor and about 4 years ago I started to convert a virgin sawa (ricefield) in the hills above Singaraja into a tropical paradise. It is grown around a 100 years old “lumbung” (Balinese rice barn on columns). It got a seamlessly connection between inside and outside. The swimming pool follows the shape of the sawa’s and when you swim you have a magnificent view. I remarried recently and live now with my new husband,. Therefor I can share Pondok Apsari with guests to experience to live so close to nature. It is great to share that feeling of freedom.
