Spend the night in a gently haunted 1947 former elementary school in a tiny fishing lake town 18 miles from Mt. Rainier! Rent a boat and fish on the lake. Enjoy sunsets & deer, and beer at the HQ tavern. Entire place (5 rooms) rents for $500/weekend.

The space

We're converting this kickass 12,000 square foot former elementary school and 7,000 square foot gym on 5 acres into a multi-disciplinary overnight artists residency. Your stay not only puts you near Mt. Rainier, but it helps to support a building that will at other times of year house artists doing their thing. So, your vacation helps the arts. How cool is that?

Guest access

Guests will have a bedroom with queen bed and either an ensuite half-bath or bathroom nearby in the hall. Showers are in the gym's locker room. Wander on the 5 acre property. Sit on the back deck. Barbecue. Dance like no one's watching in the gym. Sit on the front lawn and watch sun set over Rainier. Make some s'mores or toss a frisbee to your dog in the back field. Watch the deer and listen to the frogs.

Interaction with guests

I or a local will try and arrange to greet you and show you around and then leave you to your own devices, but there's also a key box if we can't coordinate. I will likely be staying in another room on the property at points during your stay. The kitchen/dining area is communal.

Other things to note

There are multiple rooms (5) in the school and the dining area seats 14, so the place is available for groups. We're less than 2 hours from both Portland and Seattle, and 1 hour from Tacoma.

What a wonderful and unique place to spend a weekend. The Mineral School is an old and beautiful building being lovingly restored. The room we stayed in was large, clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathrooms were just down the hall, the ones that students had at one time used, now updated and clean. It was quiet and peaceful at night. The host was welcoming and helpful. She made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The school is a great location for getting to the Nisqually entrance and the Longmire area of Mt. Rainier National Park. We will be back!

The school is AMAZING. I was there with some extended family, including four kids and the kids LOVED it. They got to run up and down the halls and do "performances" on the stage. We rented the whole place, as opposed to just the one room, and it was way more than enough space for seven people. It was clean and felt like a fun adventure. Jane was lovely to work with, very prompt with responses to my numerous questions, and flexible to meet our needs.

Jane and Dave were great hosts and we loved our stay at Mineral School. The school had everything we needed and Jane was so kind to have yogurt, coffee, snacks and toiletries! Mineral is a beautiful little town, not far from Rainier. We hope we are able to come back and visit again soon!

We spent a delightful weekend in this school house. It is comfortable, quiet, and such a great adventure. Jane is a lovely host. She provided us with more snacks than we could consume. The kitchen is clean and well stocked. We were able to make some very creative meals. I would do this again.

If you're looking for a unique place to stay, this is it! I loved every minute of being in the schoolhouse: the architecture was great, the building is well-kept, the kitchen/bathroom were clean and modern, and I had plenty of space for the price (and the city of Mineral is itself a wide-open space). The atmosphere was very conducive to relaxation and getting some writing work done. Jane as a host was incredibly nice, having waited up late for my arrival on the first and having also stocked the fridge with foods and beverages I'd like. She showed me around the building and made sure I had everything I needed. I also think it's helpful to know that this solid old building has great acoustics -- which also amplify the volume of dogs barking down the street and big trucks driving by. If you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs just in case!

We spent two nights at this unique former schoolhouse and had a fabulous time! Jane was very warm and accommodating. The bed was very comfortable and inside a huge classroom. Such a fun environment and great location for exploring the Mt. Rainier area. We were able to get some nice hikes in and also spent time just relaxing and reading at the schoolhouse- There is a very comfortable library area with an excellent selection of novels and literature. All in all, we had a really nice experience.

I'm a longtime journalist and creative writer who in recent years has begun doing literary volunteering and is starting up an artists' residency in a former elementary school near Mt. Rainier. I work from home most of the time and enjoy sharing information with travelers -- if they want to hear it. I'm into good but simple food, literary fiction and memoir, and am a decent tarot reader.
