The space

Our home;
Our place is situated on the “Sporenburg-Island” which is one of the 4 small peninsulas that constitute the heart of the popular, hip eastern docks area. You are surrounded on 3 sides with water.
All floors behind the front door are available to our guests, ca 110 m2 in total, you will have total privacy. Front room on the ground floor, with its own access from the street might be in use by owner.
1st floor (ground floor): shadowy patio with big bamboo's is highly recommended during heat-waves, front door, children’s bedroom with one bed and an extra mattress to serve as a floor bed. If you want we can put a 3rd mattress on elevated floor. There is a downstairs WC and separate bathroom with bath, shower, washing machine and dryer.
2nd floor: fully equipped, light kitchen (ceramic cooking, microwave, dish washer, lots of pans and utensils). The kitchen has a large door-window overlooking the street and another large window overlooking the 'jungle'-patio. Dining table seating 6 persons easily.
On this floor there is a 2nd WC and the airy, light master bedroom with comfortable double bed with adjustable headrests and a small TV.
3rd floor: beautiful light living room, stylish yet cosy, overlooking the water activity on the “IJ” that used to be the harbour of Amsterdam and is today busy with boats, ships, and ferry’s. On the other side of the room the glass facade overlooks our large, very sunny and secluded roof garden (ca 20 m2). This roof garden is equipped with 2 hammocks: 1 traditional and 1 fatboy, concrete stools, easy chairs and some foldable small tables. It is a great place to spend hours to eat or read, wine and dine!

Guest access

All the space behind the front door on the shadowy patio is yours! See description.
The front room at the street will sometimes be occupied by the owner. It has a separate entrance.

Interaction with guests

I am available by phone for any questions that might arise but I won't be in your way.

The neighbourhood

Our house in located in the popular eastern docks area with lots of interesting modern architecture. Water truly surrounds you everywhere in this neighbourhood. Most of the area was build in the 90s and is well known for its architecture. Students from all over the world visit all year round to see the unique JAVA-island and Scheepstimmermanstraat. There are some nice restaurants, the hip Lloyd Hotel with a lovely outdoor terrace in the back and some very special shops on walking distance.
The street itself is quiet and friendly. The large playground is great for playing soccer with your kids. Locals swim in the water of the IJ that surrounds our residential peninsula on 3 sides. Although it is not officially allowed it's an excellent way to start the day!

Getting around

Amsterdam is a compact City, especially the 17th Century centre. From our home the city centre is a 10 to 15 minute bike ride. Biking is highly recommended in the summertime. Tram 10 and 26, busses 48, 22, 65 are at approx. 8 minute walk from the house.
Parking your car is expensive but easily available in our street. For longer stay we recommend parking at P+R for aproximately 4 Euro a day. It is just 1 stop by tram.
You can travel with tram 26 from the Central Station (train station). It would take about 30 minutes in total .
Or take a taxi when you arrive with a lot of luggage. It cost me 15 Euro's last time I did that.

Other things to note

city of Amsterdam
The city offers many nice parks, great restaurants, a lot of unique shops, the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum (with most famous Nachtwacht by Rembrandt) Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Van Gogh Museum, the famous Canals and picturesque 17th Century Centre, Rembrandthuis, Red Light District, Blijburg (the hippy beach on IJburg), and of course many hidden treasures.
