The space

This is a set of two interconnecting rooms in my apartment / guesthouse The Academy Garden.

The first room is a sitting room, but also contains a single bed; the second room has a double bed and an extremely wide antique desk (a perfect place to spread out your books, notes, or artist's sketchpad). At the back of the bedroom is a bathroom (shower, no tub).

Both main rooms overlook the garden of the Academy of Arts, a scene of never ceasing variety - a dense wall of greenery in the summer and in the winter an expanse of open white space inscribed with an intricate tracery of branches and the Classical lines of the academy buildings.

Location: our 230 square metre apartment is directly opposite the garden of the Academy of Arts. The Hermitage, St Isaac's, and the Mariinsky Theatre are all 15-20 minutes' walk away; the Menshikov Palace is only 5. Nearest metro station: 6 minutes. Turn right out of our front door, walk 150 metres, and you find yourself on the bank of the main river, with all of the centre of St Petersburg spread before you. Opposite and a little to the left are St Isaac’s and the statue of the Bronze Horseman. Beside you are the twin sphinxes crouching solemnly on the embankment in front of the Academy of Arts. This is an ideal spot from which to watch the raising of the bridges on summer nights.

Kitchen / dining room: the apartment has a fully equipped kitchen adjoining a large dining room.

Rates: The nightly rate for these rooms varies depending on time of year and number of occupants, and includes breakfast, unlimited tea and coffee, and some help (where required) with getting to know St Petersburg. Discounts are available for artists, academics, and anyone with a good case to make.

Fantastic apartment - I don't think there can be many as good anywhere. John was a great host helping us with everything from getting around and where to go all the way through to questions on filling out our visa applications! Great value, thouroughly recommended

Although a little rocky start (by no means John's fault), we enjoyed a great time in St. Petersburg at John's place. The appartment is nicely furnished and has a cozy feel to it. John is a wonderful, interesting and very knowlegeable host who has lived in Russia for many years an…

Beautiful apartment, fantastic location, Exceptionally kind and helpful host Tonya. Our only regret was that the property wasn't available for the entire duration of our stay in St Petersburg.

My fiancee and I had the most incredible time at John's place. We stayed with John at his grand apartment for three nights which felt like weeks. John is an intellectual who, if you are lucky to have as the host, will speak fluent Russian (or English) to you on any topic with sop…

Johns apartment in St. Petersburg is amazing. Very beautifully and elegantly furnished and located in a nice living area with a metro station nearby. From there it is only one station to famous Newski-Prospekt. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms very modern and comfo…

Beautiful place, perfectly organized. And John´s book on the city and its people is worth a read too. Next time we will try to stay longer!

I'm English, but I've more or less got over it (lived in Russia for the best part of 20 years, now live in Berlin for most of the time). I'm a translator by trade; I'm also a builder, architect, furniture-restorer, cook. For my unconventional take on St Petersburg, see
