About this listing

*This cabin was just featured in the New York Times!* (January 2017) A magical homesteader cabin embedded in 5 acres of unfenced Joshua Tree desert wilderness, 12 minutes from downtown Joshua Tree. Experience peace, quiet, wildlife and STARS—on the grid but off the pavement.

The space

If this cabin is booked on your dates, check out our other two cabins nearby ("Homestead Camp Cabin in Joshua Tree" and "Midcentury Prefab Homesteader Cabin")

*** If you would like to use our cabin as a shooting location please get in touch to discuss our rates, otherwise we do not allow commercial or professional shooting of any kind (photo, video, film) during your stay. Thank you in advance! ***

The restored cabin, which has been featured in the New York Times 'T' travel magazine, Wilder Quarterly, The Weekender and the book 'Jackrabbit Homestead,' was constructed in 1955 and still has its original green paint.

Joshua Tree National Park is a 15 minute drive from the cabin. The Integratron and Giant Rock are also 15 minutes away. The cabin is less than two miles from artist Noah Purifoy's famous sculpture garden site. Two miles in the other direction is Dhamma Dena, teacher Ruth Denison's Vipassana Buddhist center. The always swinging Pappy & Harriet's BBQ and music roadhouse in beautiful Pioneertown is a 30-minute drive. The Lou Harrison House, which hosts occasional devotional, folk and avant garde music events in an intimate setting is less than 10 minutes away. We will be happy to give you directions to each of these unique places (and many others) that we frequent ourselves.

The cabin sits on 5 acres, and feels remote, but it's just 12 minutes from downtown Joshua Tree. You will travel a few miles on a secure, hard dirt road to get here. Enjoy the spectacular panoramic sunset and sunrise—as well as a blanket of stars. In the wintertime, you can build a bonfire too. Sleep comfortably in a queen-sized bed.

The renovated interior has a cookware-outfitted kitchen and dining area. There is an outhouse with a dry toilet and roofless shower a few yards from the cabin. Wireless internet is available if you require a connection to the digital world. The cabin is equipped with air conditioning.

The cabin is located next to BLM land and a wildlife corridor, which means you will witness these wild animals in their native habitat. The cottontail rabbits, cactus wrens, lizards, desert tortoises, jackrabbits, coyotes, owls and roadrunners (and more!) that make the desert their home make a visit to this serene cabin all the more special.

Guests may have freshly prepared organic juices made by local juice cleanse guru Angela de la Agua delivered to the cabin. A menu/pricelist is available upon request.

Extra guests can sleep on the air mattress or camp on the site for an additional $30/person per night. This absolutely must be arranged with us ahead of time so that it can be reflected in the Airbnb reservation and bill.

Please note that we have a TW0-NIGHT MINIMUM stay, and a THREE-NIGHT MINIMUM FOR HOLIDAY WEEKENDS. This requirement allows us to keep our rates low, so that the greatest number of folks get a chance to experience being here in the unfenced desert, under the Milky Way.

We donate 2.5% of our proceeds to the Mojave Desert Land Trust, an excellent local non-profit organization devoted to "protect[ing] the Mojave Desert ecosystem and its scenic and cultural resource values."

Interaction with guests

Upon your arrival, we will introduce you to how the cabin works, and to the land and its animals. We live up the road and will be available 24/7 during your stay.

CHECK-IN TIME is by appointment only, between 3pm-8pm. We recommend arriving before dark.

CHECK-OUT TIME is noon.

No smoking indoors. Smoking outdoors is permitted away from the cabin only, using an ashtray. We live in the wild and brushfire is a real possibility.

No firearms. No drones. No ORVs. Nothing mechanical and moving is allowed on the property or over it.

Absolutely no commercial photography or filming is permitted on site without previous agreement with us.

Please check with us as to where you can roam on foot. The cabin is situated on five acres of near-wilderness, next to many more acres of BLM-owned wilderness, including a wash. We'll be happy to show you where the boundaries are, where the best views are, the best flowers, the tortoise burrows and so on.

Most importantly, do not harm or harass the wildlife or tamper in any way with their respective nests or burrows. We will explain to you what to do if you encounter specific animals (roadrunner, cactus wren, desert tortoise, coyote, snakes, etc) while you are here. We all live here together. It's easy to do.

Stephanie & Jay provided us a wonderful place to breathe on our travels in this little gem of a Desert cabin. There was everything we needed, and it was such a joy to stay in a place where there has been put so much thought into every element. I enjoyed the outdoor shower, the clear view to the milkyway on the porch.

We loved the views of the sunset and the landscape. The cabin was comfy and felt like home. Forewarning... I am the kind of person who pees multiple times in the middle of the night, which is a little unnerving in such a desolate setting when the bathroom is outside. Also, if you're creeped out by bugs, this might not be the place for you!!! Otherwise it was perfect and I highly recommend it!

The JT Homesteader is a wonderful stay. Comfortable and beautiful and with views that can't be beat. Jay and Stephanie are great hosts - communications were easy and kind. They gave us great tips on things to do in and around JT. We will definitely be back, it was a magical weekend!

We planned a couple of days in Joshua Tree for the start of our summer California holiday to help us unwind. The Homesteader cabin was the most beautiful, secluded and picturesque spot we could have imagined. Miles of open desert helped us clear our minds. We loved enjoying our morning coffee on the verandah while watching the sun rise, and the evening colours across the desert were truly magical.

The Homesteader Cabin was everything we had hoped it would be. It was simple and comfy. Though we didn't meet Stephanie, Jay was very welcoming. The cabin is private and open. The view is amazing. Overall, it was a pleasant experiece. Thank you so much!

Our stay at the Sonora Cabin was not only our best Airbnb yet but the most memorable vacation destination. We had no idea what to expect with the desert in the high summer and we will honestly be back as soon as we can! The landscape is breathtaking and seriously one of a kind, and Jay and Stephanie are knowledgeable and friendly. The AC unit also works amazingly, we arrived in a (47 degrees Celsius!) heat wave and we were totally fine in the cabin.

Stephanie And Jay User ProfileStephanie And Jay is a superhost.

We are creative types who left Los Angeles in 2010 seeking a richer, more serene lifestyle inside nature. Stephanie is an architect, Jay is founder/editor of Arthur Magazine. We live in Joshua Tree full-time and rent out our three restored homestead cabins (with a fourth on the way). We're active in the local community and we also maintain ties to friends and colleagues in LA and beyond. We're excited to meet you and we offer you a warm welcome.
