About this listing

We have a small, simple, private studio room for guests to stay in while they are visiting the Monterey Peninsula.

The space

Hello Airbnb travelers!

We have a small, simple, very private studio room for guests to stay in while they are visiting the Monterey Peninsula. Though we are located right by Highway 1 as you enter Carmel, once you step through the large wooden gate and walk down the brick pathway in our secret garden, you will find a safe, clean, and simple haven to call home during your stay.

The room has a private entrance and a private bath, connected, yet completely closed off and separate from the main house where we live. The redwood room, hardwood floor, high-beam ceiling, and flora and fauna theme give the studio a calm, cheerful feel. The room has a comfortable queen size bed with a memory foam topper, and plenty of soft blankets and pillows. The bathroom has a shower, heat lamp, a wonderful radiant heat floor and lots of towels. There is no kitchen, but there is a small refrigerator, a tea kettle, and a coffee maker for your morning coffee. We provide complimentary freshly ground organic beans, a variety of teas, organic half & half and purified water. On the bookshelf you will find many books to read on local history, travel guides, hiking trails, California bird, tree and wildflower field guides, and other interesting topics. Wifi , a Bose Wave radio/cd player with a selection of cd's, a hair dryer, binoculars, a picnic basket, beach towels, ear plugs, and a small tv with Roku options, are also provided for your use and enjoyment.

The house is situated right off Highway 1 as you enter Carmel, but we are surprisingly tucked away and hidden from view- but please note-*** YOU WILL HEAR TRAFFIC***. It quiets way down after rush hours in the morning and evening, even more after 11 p.m., and after ~12,-12:30 is u-s-ually pretty much quiet all night, although a bit louder and later during holidays, weekends, and local main events. The occasional siren and motorcycle can be heard, but with the windows closed, it's usually not that bad. Though the highway sound can definitely be an issue for some, almost all people so far have found the level to be acceptable- the new dual-pane windows and door help a lot! The upside to the location is that it offers very fast, instant access to any destination you are headed, be it Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, Point Lobos, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Monterey or Big Sur.

***INCLUDED with the price of the room, we offer several perks to make your stay even more enjoyable:
*Two Monterey Bay Aquarium guest passes (an $100 value)
*A California State Park pass which gives you free access to our local Point Lobos State Park Reserve (a $10 value).
*Complimentary wine tasting card at an excellent local winery (a $20 value).
All are must-see places to go while you are here in Carmel, and if you take advantage of all these perks, it's like getting one night free!

If you are looking for a sunny, secluded, quiet place to stay, this is not the place for you, but if you are looking for a private, conveniently located, reasonably priced, cozy space with a hot shower, a comfortable bed and basic amenities, to use as a home base during your adventure, then this just may be the perfect spot.

+++++PLEASE NOTE+++++If you do decide to inquire about or book the room, please share a little about yourself, who you will be travelling with, and the purpose of your visit in your first message to us. Please understand that we will only accept reservations from 100% verified guests with a completed profile and photo.

Thank you for your interest in our studio and we look forward to meeting you if you should decide to click "book it!"

You will have total privacy in the studio, but we are available 24/7 if you have any questions or need anything at all.

Other things to note

We are a 5 minute drive to downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, and about a 15 minute walk through the backroads of Carmel, all downhill, although we do recommend driving (it's all uphill home, and with no street lights, it is dark at night.)

There is a two night minimum stay, no exceptions.

If there happens to be a single night between guests, we do block it off, so if you are wanting to book an additional night, feel free to ask to see if the night is open.

No pets are allowed in the studio- no exceptions- so people with pet allergies, there is no need to worry.

The only guests allowed to occupy the studio are agreed to during booking.

We spent our time in Michael and Jill's place, the secret garden. The room is very clean and tidy. It has everything that you can imagine inside it. They even got the aquarium season ticket and nation parking ticket ready for you( it means they are free of charge). Each items in the room is well- thought and well-planned. For example, there are sufficient books for you to read regarding to the area surrounding, board games to challenge with your partner and three types of pillow in different softness for you to decide. I would say that with so many Airbnbs I have stayed, Michael and Jill's place defined the word "prefect". I want to keep the secret garden in secret so I can keep it away from public!

Jill and Michael's place was perfect for me and my boyfriend as we spent a weekend exploring the Monterey peninsula. Their house is conveniently located next to the highway which allowed us easy access to Carmel and Monterey. The road noise was not an issue for us and the room has everything we needed and more (the bed is so comfortable!). I would absolutely recommend staying here for anyone visiting the area that is looking for a central location and a convenient place to stay. Jill and Michael were wonderful, kind, and helpful hosts!

The hosts were nice and friendly and we enjoyed the aquarium and parks passes. As the description warns, you will hear traffic noise. So I would say this is a fine place to stay for those with a high tolerance for heavy traffic noise during waking hours. To be more specific, the listing is very close to an intersection with a traffic light, so that rather than being a continuous hum (like freeway noise) the noise level is highly variable as a result of cars accelerating and decelerating for the light. The space is also quite small and came to feel a bit cramped over our multiple day stay.

Response from Michael And Jill:
As you can read from other reviews, most of our guests are quite satisfied with the studio, we are sorry that your stay wasn't what you expected. If you had communicated with us, we would have been happy to help you relocate. We do try to state very clearly in our description, with numerous photos, what people can expect from our space. We are sorry this wasn't a good fit.

Our stay in the Secret Garden Room was perfect! Jill & Michael's attention to detail was evident our entire stay. Falling into the comfy bed after a long day of hiking was my favorite part (and the organic coffee!) Jill & Michael had plenty of suggestions for things to do and we used the park pass & aquarium passes! The room offered us much privacy and was a nice little place to call home for the weekend.

This place is a little gem. Michael and Jill are super lovely people who will do anything for you throughout your stay. They offered us loads of advice and tips of places to visit and things to do whilst we stayed in Carmel, but were also very attentive to anything that we asked for. The room is perfect and has everything you could need - even English breakfast tea . The passes to the aquarium and state parks really are great perks to have with the stay - make sure you visit. The 'noise' of the highway was not an issue in the slightest. It was good to have our own parking space to use each time we came back to the house. This is a super stay and you will be made to feel at home.

We are both life-time Carmel locals. We cherish the local beauty of the hills and coastline that surrounds us, and we feel very blessed to be here. I am a dog sitter, and Michael is a veteran Caddie at Pebble Beach Golf Links. I love gardening, William Morris and Pre-Raphaelite art, animals, shell collecting and vegetarian cooking. Michael loves taking saunas, walking Point Lobos, hiking in the Sierra mountains, learning about local fauna and eating my vegetarian cooking. We are both passionate about water, energy and resource conservation, composting and recycling. We love Airbnb and look forward to opening our humble home to travelers near and far.
