The apartment is integrated in two medieval skipper houses. They have been renovated and modernized carefully. The apartment is situated directly at the fantastic "Rheinsteig" hiking route.

The space

The two skipper-houses are situated in the medieval old town of Kaub. The houses are set back from the railroad line, so that the guests will not get disturbed by the train noise. (The house has its own mooring area for boats, close to the ferry and only 5 minutes walk from the market place - with a wonderful view at the toll castle Pfalzgrafenstein on an island in the river.) By renovating the houses I tried to preserve the interesting marks of building history, like old tapestry or ornamental paintings. Partly the original art nouveau windows with their genuine glass could be restored. Through the gap of the neighborhood buildings some sights offer a view to the river, especially in winter, when the trees have lost their leaves. From the kitchen and the bedrooms you look at the romanic church from 1315 on the opposite side of the market place. The space used to be two houses, now connected, with a lounge on one side of the entrance and a kitchen/dining on the other. The kitchen offers a real „oldtimer“, a properly functioning stove („Gaggenau“) from 1950. The lounge provides a three piece suite manufactured in Vienna 1910. Two flight of stairs on both sides of the house lead up to 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. As typical for medieval houses, the stairs are rather steep. Please be careful! The bathrooms have been renewed completely (Design Phillip Starck), with a shower and a bathtub. Every room is heated by a modern central gas heating from 2012, the individual temperature can be regulated in the rooms. The double bedrooms have queen-sized beds (1,40 m x 2,00 m). In front of the house, there is a small area with garden furniture where the guest can sit and eat under lime trees. The house is a non-smoking area, but smokers can use the leafy bower outside. The guest can utilize the whole house except the wine cellars and the attics ;-). The house offers free wifi. I cannot only recommend the local wine, you should also test the local drinking water from the tap The City of Kaub still has it´s own rock spring with excellent still mineral water. It is not treated with any chemistry! So, please enjoy it! Parking your car on the market place or beside the streets is free in Kaub! There is a bakery right across from the house for breakfast pastries and a small supermarket 2mins walk away, plus a few restaurants, wine taverns, antique shops and a friendly post office/gift shop within eye shot. The bakery is also open on Sunday morning! Kaub can also be reached easily by train from Frankfurt or Cologne. It still has it´s own train station. It also has two landing places for cruise ships, that will take you to other beautiful old towns in the UNESCO Heritage Upper Middelrhine. If you love to hike at the famous „Rheinsteig“ trail, you are at the right place. The section between Kaub and the Loreley rock starts at the market place. With 836 inhabitants Kaub is one of the smallest cities Germany! Nevertheless, nearly each Kauber resident is socially involved in the wine festival, the open air theater, the Bluecher-festival, the fire brigade feast, the St. Martin procession, the St. Nicholas market, the car-free event for bikers in summer, and so on. The „Rhinelanders“ are extremely communicative, very tolerant and cosmopolitan. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, people from all ethnic groups and all religions or convictions are cordially welcomed. If I cannot welcome you personally, my neighbor Lidio will help you with the check-in and the check-out.

Dirk’s home was the best jumping-off spot I could have picked for a stay in the Rhine valley. The little town of Kaub is quiet once the tour lunchers are gone for the day, and it’s so easy to drive or get the train to anywhere along the river. The ferry is a couple blocks away to cross over. I was there for Rhine in Flames & it was convenient to just walk up the highway (~2KM) to a good viewing point for the fireworks. Dirk was extra helpful before my visit too—he provided plenty of info about the area & good instructions about how to work stuff in the house. Historical homes aren’t for everyone but I love their quirks (narrow stairs, step ups between rooms, electric switches in odd places) and this one has been thoughtfully restored & filled with interesting things that I’d love to hear the stories about. The modern bathrooms were a treat. You can walk up the hill to the winery & the castle. Note about the area—the one local grocery store is very basic so if you plan to cook you’ll have to get some of your supplies in one of the bigger towns. There’s a bakery across the street for fresh bread & pastries. The handful of shops on the main street mostly didn’t ever seem to open, though the restaurants did. This isn’t tourist central like some of the other Rhine towns (thankfully no cheesy souvenir shops!) but if you’re looking for someplace that’s quiet & centrally located this is perfect.

Our time in Kaub was good everything close by. Dirks house was quiet quirky with lots of memorabilia from days gone by. The village was handy with restaurant and bakery and hotel all very close by with great food and wine. The people all seem to know we were staying at Dirks place, even did a antipasto dish for us to take home and have, then returned our plates nothing was an effort. Walked each morning seen lots of friendly people with their dogs. The only thing missing was a laundry.

Dirk's house is lovely - full of quirky character. It was fun staying here and exploring the middle Rhine valley by foot, train, car and boat! We especially liked meeting Dirk who was lovely and very welcoming. The house was occasionally noisy as it close to road and train track but mostly very quiet. Be warned: everything is closed on a Wednesday afternoon! Otherwise shops, bakeries etc v close and convenient. All in all a great stay!

We love our cottage in Kaub. It was in the middle of a beautiful village with plenty of restaurants and hotels. We found it was also easy to visit other sites close by. Dirk welcomed us and gave plenty of suggestions for our stay. He has restored and decorated the cottage beautifully. It was great for a traveling group of four.

Staying here made our trip to the Rhine something special! We stayed for almost a week because we really wanted to get to know the area and travel slow. The space is so unique and like nothing you would find at a hotel or guest house--filled with antiques, collectibles, and highly personal touches from Dirk's creative aesthetic. He has perfectly preserved the historical aspects of the medieval home while adding modern amenities. It was nice to have two separate bedrooms and cook our own meals in the kitchen using supplies from the market just down the street. We didn't have a car, but the place is easily accessible by train and boat. Kaub is much smaller and quieter than other tourist towns along the Rhine, but we liked the local atmosphere. If you prefer a sparse, modern hotel then this place might not be for you, but if you want something with tons of character and history, then Dirk's house is it! Check in was easy and just as described, and Dirk even swung by to greet us in person.
