The apartment is integrated in two medieval skipper houses. They have been renovated and modernized carefully. The apartment is situated directly at the fantastic "Rheinsteig" hiking route.
The two skipper-houses are situated in the medieval old town of Kaub. The houses are set back from the railroad line, so that the guests will not get disturbed by the train noise. (The house has its own mooring area for boats, close to the ferry and only 5 minutes walk from the market place - with a wonderful view at the toll castle Pfalzgrafenstein on an island in the river.) By renovating the houses I tried to preserve the interesting marks of building history, like old tapestry or ornamental paintings. Partly the original art nouveau windows with their genuine glass could be restored. Through the gap of the neighborhood buildings some sights offer a view to the river, especially in winter, when the trees have lost their leaves. From the kitchen and the bedrooms you look at the romanic church from 1315 on the opposite side of the market place. The space used to be two houses, now connected, with a lounge on one side of the entrance and a kitchen/dining on the other. The kitchen offers a real „oldtimer“, a properly functioning stove („Gaggenau“) from 1950. The lounge provides a three piece suite manufactured in Vienna 1910. Two flight of stairs on both sides of the house lead up to 2 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. As typical for medieval houses, the stairs are rather steep. Please be careful! The bathrooms have been renewed completely (Design Phillip Starck), with a shower and a bathtub. Every room is heated by a modern central gas heating from 2012, the individual temperature can be regulated in the rooms. The double bedrooms have queen-sized beds (1,40 m x 2,00 m). In front of the house, there is a small area with garden furniture where the guest can sit and eat under lime trees. The house is a non-smoking area, but smokers can use the leafy bower outside. The guest can utilize the whole house except the wine cellars and the attics ;-). The house offers free wifi. I cannot only recommend the local wine, you should also test the local drinking water from the tap The City of Kaub still has it´s own rock spring with excellent still mineral water. It is not treated with any chemistry! So, please enjoy it! Parking your car on the market place or beside the streets is free in Kaub! There is a bakery right across from the house for breakfast pastries and a small supermarket 2mins walk away, plus a few restaurants, wine taverns, antique shops and a friendly post office/gift shop within eye shot. The bakery is also open on Sunday morning! Kaub can also be reached easily by train from Frankfurt or Cologne. It still has it´s own train station. It also has two landing places for cruise ships, that will take you to other beautiful old towns in the UNESCO Heritage Upper Middelrhine. If you love to hike at the famous „Rheinsteig“ trail, you are at the right place. The section between Kaub and the Loreley rock starts at the market place. With 836 inhabitants Kaub is one of the smallest cities Germany! Nevertheless, nearly each Kauber resident is socially involved in the wine festival, the open air theater, the Bluecher-festival, the fire brigade feast, the St. Martin procession, the St. Nicholas market, the car-free event for bikers in summer, and so on. The „Rhinelanders“ are extremely communicative, very tolerant and cosmopolitan. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, people from all ethnic groups and all religions or convictions are cordially welcomed. If I cannot welcome you personally, my neighbor Lidio will help you with the check-in and the check-out.
