Guest access

The Barn is self-contained with its own garden and private entrance. Cranham House and Welcombe Coastal Barn are situated in 18 acres of land in a wooded valley near Welcombe, North Devon. It is our only self-catering barn and so privacy and peace are at a premium. Guests are free to relax and eat outside. Garden table and chairs and bbq provided.

Interaction with guests

The Barn is an annexe to Cranham House and we are always available to help guests as little or as much as they desire. We value our own privacy and peace, that's why we live here.

The neighbourhood

Cranham House and Coastal Barn stands in its own setting in beautiful countryside, with woods and hills of outstanding natural beauty. It is a short walk from the garden (about 20 mins) to the beach at Welcombe Mouth on the North Devon/Cornwall coast. It is part of the parish of Hartland and Welcombe is just a valley away. Welcombe itself has a small fine church, great pub and a community run shop. The whole area is called the Hartland Peninsula and is just a network of green lanes, farms and tucked away houses with the Atlantic ocean an ever present influence on all our lives. The woods are carpeted with bluebells in Spring and the succession of wild flowers in Summer is breathtaking. The sense of space and freedom to roam along foot paths and on the magnificent stretches of the coastal path, (south to Morwenstow and Bude; north to Hartland Quay and Point), cannot be rivalled. Perhaps, it is only the Highlands of Scotland or the deep interior of Wales which can match it for a sense of British wilderness. The nearest towns are Bude (15 miles) and Bideford (20 miles). Clovelly is about 10 miles away and Hartland is 9 miles from us.
The surfing beaches are too numerous to mention. Water sports of all kinds are available. There is an excellent riding stables near by and private equestrian facilities including beach riding is available in Welcombe itself. There are fabulous gardens to visit including the only RHS garden in the West Country - Rosemoor - which is a easily drivable in a day. There are golf courses in Bude and Westward Ho! (the oldest links course in England). Cycling along the quiet green lanes of the Hartland Peninsula is a joy and virtually traffic free. Of course, there is always the option of doing nothing. Of sitting on the beach and completely chilling out with nothing more strenuous than a book and a picnic.

Getting around

Public transport is not extensive. There is a bus service between Bude and Hartland each day although you would need to be taken to the picking up point at Welcombe Cross. If you come here to walk the coastal path we do offer lifts to starting points and pick ups at the end of the day as well as luggage transfer on to your next destination after your visit with us (a minimum of 3 nights). Foreign guests can fly in to the nearest airport at Bristol and hire a car to get to us. There is a very detailed description of how to get to us on the website.

Other things to note

If, like us, you appreciate peace and quiet and the joys of natural beauty then this is the place for you. Don't come if a daily shopping fix is your thing. The landscape is glorious. The sea is magnificent. And, the welcome will be warm.

A very nice secluded little barn. We had a lovely few days here. The amazing views are only a 20 minute walk away too.

We had a FABULOUS time at Coastal Barn with beautiful views down to Welcombe Mouth. It was perfect for us (a couple with a small baby) as we were looking for some peace and quiet. We definitely got that; 10 minutes off the main road down country lanes and then through a field. Jennifer and Alan were brilliant hosts, giving us all the privacy we needed but always on hand to help out with suggestions and directions whenever we asked. The surrounding area is gorgeous too. We'll definitely be returning to the Hartland Peninsula and hopefully to Jennifer and Alan's place. Can't recommend highly enough.

Alan and Jennifer are terrific hosts and the location of their home is spectacular for those wanting peace and quiet in a beautiful setting close to a rugged natural coastline. Follow the instructions for finding the house exactly so as not to get lost. We were greeted with a delicious cake freshly baked by Jennifer, a bottle of wine, fresh farm eggs, cookies, and we enjoyed using the cozy wood stove. Plenty of good walks can be accessed from the house and topped off by a walk to a pub serving delicious food.

Hosts Jennifer and Alan were both very accommodating and helpful when needed. The property was secluded in a valley reached via a single track road and within a 30 walk of beautiful craggy Welcombe Mouth beach and South Coast cliff top paths, giving glorious views. The property was comfortable with all that is needed for a short stay just as the photos show. The kitchen , though small, lacked nothing and provided kitchen basics eg salt pepper, washing up liquid, cooking oil etc The welcome pack of goodies was an added bonus enjoyed. The night time sky was fabulous due to no light pollution, never seen so many stars. If going when wet, be sure to take boots if planning to go walking locally through woodland, otherwise you'll miss some lovely countryside. Surrounding areas visited offering beautiful scenery were Welcombe Mouth, Hartland Quay, Clovelly, Padstow and Tintagel. The local 70,s themed pub of The Old Smithy served up a very tasty tea and would be lovely in the summer for evening drinks in the beer garden. All in all, a lovely place for a get away break.

Jennifer and Alan are some of the most welcoming hosts I have ever stayed with on AirBnB. We were greeted with a smile and some organic treats including apple and walnut cake and local ale. The barn is quaint, secluded, and very, very homely. The log fire provides enough warmth and ambience for all your needs, and the furnishings are clearly well thought through and compliment each other nicely. The barn backs onto stunning views of the valley and sea below, right in the heart of a patch of woodland. The local pub (The Old Smithy) is about a 40 min walk but well worth it - the food is great, and the 70's decor even better. The landlord was very friendly and even gave us a lift back to the barn when we were done! Top tip: there is no phone signal on EE at the barn, so can be easy to get lost if you don't have a map and it's dark (as we found out!). The directions that Jennifer gave us were very good and we managed to find our way there just fine on our first evenings stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would love to return.
