Access

There are two ways to access the bungalow, one of these up through a steep road, the other with a small steep descent. That said, as Réunion Island is a volcanic Island centered by the highest mountain (3077 m) in this Indian Ocean region, a lot of the accomodations for rent which are not on or near the seashore (and more expensive!) will have steep access roads. In other words our location is not any different from a lot of other locations you will find here at Réunion. And this is simply because we live on a mountainous Island with some of the steepest mountains you can find due to the relative young age of Réunion island compared to a lot of other volcanic islands (Erosion has not have had enough time).

Distance from main centers of tourist interest:

You are 4.4 km or 8 minutes drive from the center of the charming village of Saint-Leu, with its lagoon and beaches. Saint Leu is home to a surf spot known for its famous left wave.

You are 10 km or 15 minutes by car from the launch site for paragliders Colimaçons. Races of the World Cup Paragliding took place in Saint-Leu in 2003 and 2006, and "Pre World Cup race Tour" in 2010

You are 6.3 km or 8 minutes by car from National Botanical Conservatory Mascarin. The Botanical Conservatory Mascarin with numerous endemic species on the island

You are 6.8 kilometers or 10 minutes by car from the Observatory of Marine Turtles Kélonia. Kélonia is both a center for research, intervention and treatment, an aquarium and a museum dedicated to sea turtles. It is installed on the seafront near the city.

Distance from main services:

You are 500 meters or 1 minute drive from a Doctor and Pharmacy.

You are 62 km or 54 minutes by car from the Reunion Roland Garros Airport (formerly known as Gillot Airport)...

Réunion Island's Pitons, cirques and remparts are on the UNESCO world heritage list.

The Pitons, cirques and remparts of Reunion Island site coincides with the core zone of La Réunion National Park. The property covers more than 100,000 ha or 40 % of La Réunion, an island comprising two adjoining volcanic massifs located in the south-west of the Indian Ocean. Dominated by two towering volcanic peaks, massive walls and three cliff-rimmed cirques, the property includes a great variety of rugged terrain and impressive escarpments, forested gorges and basins creating a visually striking landscape. It is the natural habitat for a wide diversity of plants, presenting a high level of endemism. There are subtropical rainforests, cloud forests and heaths creating a remarkable and visually appealing mosaic of ecosystems and landscape features.

The Mango Tree is a nice and calmy place with a wonderful view onto the scenery of Saint-Leu and the ocean. It´s worth to drive up those serpentine and steepish streets to the bungalow. Jeroen and Florence are very nice hosts and always responsive to requests around your stay. We really enjoyed our first time on La Réunion. It was always nice to come back to the bungalow after long days of hiking or sightseeing, to fresh up in the shower bath and to savour the moment of a wonderfull holiday. All discriptions did match to this location. It was our choice to take this little place for our stay. If your looking for more accommodation like an air condition, a beach bar next door, a bathtube or a pool this won´t be the right place. But if you wan´t to stay in a location nearby reunionese nature, with pleasant temperature and an outdoor kitchen with panoramic view it might be fitting. Maybe just one handy tip - we were glad to have our mosquito repellent, because on Réunion mosquitos always stray around. Some reviews are quiet righ about the access to the bungalow - but hey, you`re on Réunion! If you are travelling with a rental car I think it just comes up with the driving skills you need. We can imagine to come back one day and we´re very thankful for this wonderfull time.

The appartment is ca. 300 meters above sea level with a terrific view. It is perfect for a couple, and the small kitchen can be used to prepare simple meals.

The Mango Tree is a lovely spot - a beautifully designed, peaceful and well equipped bungalow. It was great to sit on the balcony watching the sunset with a beer. Jeroen was a great host - communication was perfect from the beginning and he was friendly and helpful. The only downside of the bungalow is it's location - it is about a ten minute drive from St Leu up a windy road and then up an incredibly steep drive to the house. Our little hire car found it really difficult to get up and it prevented us from making more than one journey a day in the car. Just something to keep in mind if you aren't a confident driver or want to go out for a drink in the town in the evening. However if this doesn't bother you then it's a great place to stay and we fully recommend it!

Response from Jeroen:
Hi there again and thank you very much for your comment, I would like to add though that the remarks about the very steep road may need some further clarification! There is two ways to get to my bungalow and coming from l'Allée des pamplemousse you will find that this is a lot less steep. But also in first gear any car even the smallest is capable of getting up this road, although I understand that it is a lot easier for someone who is used to drive in the mountains every day. That said, as Réunion Island is a volcanic Island centered by the highest mountain (3077 m) in this Indian Ocean region, a lot of the accomodations for rent (and they are plenty!) which are not on or near the seashore (and a lot more expensive!) will have very steep access roads. In other words our location is not any different from a lot of other locations you will find here at Réunion. The appartment is perfect and exactly as described. We spent 2 weeks in "the mango tree bungalow" and really enjoyed to have everything there. Jeroen was a great host! We really recommend to stay there if you visit la Réunion!

What a great spot and what an even nicer welcome. We love the Mango tree and we'll be back. The place is like new and it's easy to feel home the second you'll see it. Jeroen and his little family are really laid back and all the neighbors we've met were super friendly too. Jeroen speaks English even some German if needed and of course French. So be assured you're in good hands. If your looking for a romantic place to stay, the Mango tree is the perfect location for your vacation at La Réunion.

Hi there, I am a Dutchman, after working and living in the Netherlands I have left in 2003 traveling in South America, India, Nepal and south east Asia for 18 months, I then lived in Toulouse for two years and I am now settled in Réunion Island since 2007 with my (french) compagnion and my two daughters who were born here in 2010 and 2015.

Considered a versatile "handyman" I keep myself busy having a (very) small independent company here on the island doing all kinds of electronic repairs, raising my children, making music and always building and improving our house, garden and managing this bungalow I built and finished in september 2014.

From 2007 to 2015 I have been an independent ultralight pilot for "les passagers du vent" (look for "ulm reunion" on the web). After years of flying over Réunion you could say I know the island well from above, and let me tell you from the many places I have been able to visit in my life, Réunion Island is a breathtaking destination in many respects!

Maybe I 'll welcome you here someday, in the mean time, safe and happy travels!!

Greetings Jeroen
