Great location

There is nowhere quite as magical as this: an historic cottage, owned by the same family for over 50 years, on the flanks of the mountain Cader Idris. Here you have space, fresh air, and tranquillity, in prime location for walking, Cader Idris, mountain biking, beaches, Barmouth and Dolgellau. Mod cons (heating, dishwasher, but no TV or wifi), a woodburner (wood & coal provided), and awe-inspiring views behind the cottage of the Barmouth Estuary and the Welsh Coast. See

The space
Downstairs is a sitting room and dining room in one open space, with a low beamed ceiling. There's a wood/coal burner in the large old fireplace, and fuel is provided. There's a small adjoining kitchen. The small bathroom with a shower (wet room) adjoins the lobby. The kitchen and bathroom are spic and span. The cottage walls are almost a metre thick. A tiny wooden staircase, fairly steep, leads up to the two bedrooms. First is the twin, and this leads directly into the double. The beds will be made up with linen and duvets, but guests bring own towels. The wall between them is a wooden partition below the beam, and there is an open space between the two rooms above the beam.

Where you’ll be

Dolgellau, Gwynedd, United Kingdom

The cottage is wonderfully peaceful. The nearest house is a farmhouse, around 500m away. There are around 6-8 gates to open and close (keeping the sheep in the right places!) between here and Dolgellau, the nearest town. Kids love opening and closing the gates! The drive takes around 30 minutes. The nearest supermarkets are in Dolgellau, or there are some small grocery shops in the smaller nearby town of Fairbourne. The land beyond the cottage was once owned by the Forestry Commission, so is covered with tall pine trees. I will send you very clear instructions about reaching the cottage.

John Hole looked after this lovely cottage for around 30 years, and used to work in the theatre and arts and entertainment. This account is now managed by my daughter, Abi.

During your stay

I live in Scotland, but arrange the collection of the keys and access to the cottage.
