There was no personal contact with the owner or staff while we were there for 3 nights, could be a bonus!!!. Saying that, here was no problem with communication or entry - so it is well run. The room and bathroom were clean, the kitchen is a difficult area to look after but great to have there. The location is fantastic especially as there is parking. The bed could do with updating. Its fine if there was only one person in it.

There was superb communication leading up to our stay so arrival and check in was seamless. Everything was labelled and easy to find - WiFi, extra towels, duvets etc. The hostel operated on a code to get in instead of a key which we loved as we didn't have to faff about picking it up and dropping it off at a certain location and time. The hostel is located very near Kings street which has a lot of bars and cafes on it. Also close to Hominy Grill which is a must. Would recommend this hostel and Charleston to others who want to explore the beautiful south.

My stay at the Notso was convenient and easy but if you are regular Airbnb traveller you need to adjust your mindset to the fact that Notso is a hostel. On booking, they asked for my email address off the Airbnb platform - I was a bit wary of this - but they obviously wanted to feed me into their standard guest confirmation system. Disappointingly, I received some emails that were primarily worded for non-Airbnb guests. I also received two random emails for another guest cancellation which the staff said 'the system must just have kicked out in error' (but didn't seem to bothered about investigating). When I arrived the staff were helpful when they were around, but you are definitely staying in hostel conditions even when you have a private room. This is nice when you can chat with fellow travellers over breakfast. Not so nice when a fellow guest lets a stranger into the house who didn't have the entry code purely on his word that he was booked in as a guest. As a women, alone in the house (the hostel office opening hours are only afternoon-evening so no staff around during the day) this made me a bit nervous. Also, if you want to leave your luggage in the house on the day after check-out, there are lockers, but you have to provide your own padlock. As someone who has stayed a lot with Airbnb and enjoys getting to know my hosts, knowing who is coming and going in the house during my stay and when you can be confident that someone will keep an eye on your bags on your last day, I think that I would prefer to book a private room in someone's house on my next visit to Charleston. Yes, many of the other bookings are pricey, but there are a few who are not. In comparison with some of the other Airbnb locations in Charleston, I felt a bit overcharged by the Notso, especially when I had to strip my own bed in the morning! Having said all that, the staff were friendly at the important contact moments of my stay. There is a lot of visitor information in the hostel plus a courtesy telephone which was helpful. The area is pleasant and not too far from the centre of town.

Information as to where to park and access to room key was received well before we left the UK, which was much appreciated. Very well located. Easy walking distance of King Street for bars and dining (as well as shopping). Double bed was on the small size.

It's pretty basic, but good value! I stayed in the Hemingway room.. It was clean and comfy. I didn't get to meet anyone .. But instructions by email where pretty straightforward and everything was in the room waiting. Just on edge of historic district.. But everything in walking distance. Short walk from king street, which is the busy Hub full of bars, restaurants and shops. Be mindful of the short walk back from there to the hostel at night.. As you would anywhere. I was fine as a single female.. And felt safe everywhere in downtown charleston. But get the feeling this is in the very edge of a slightly sketchier area, although lots of college kids about. Otherwise reasonably priced budget lodgings.

Lovely room with a polite, communicative host. my only heads-up to future guests is that the house can be a bit noisy due to its layout.

The staff at the Notso Hostel are some of the lovelies locals around. Our favorite things to do are eat breakfast with our guests, daydream about traveling and keeping the hostel clean with having as little negative impact on the environment as possible. The hostel is a great place to meet people who enjoy traveling as much as you do.
