The space

A comfortable private room awaits you in Cedar Park, West Philadelphia! Close to UPenn, Drexel, USciences, Penn Medicine, Children's Hospital, VA Hospital and Clark Park, well-connected to the rest of the city by trolley lines, buses, and regional rail, this second-floor private room in a three-bedroom flat of a historic apartment building is particularly appropriate for attendees of academic, business, and medical conferences– but we welcome all travelers! Graduate students Victoria and Joe, a Philadelphia native and a recent transplant, are your friendly hosts and can help you navigate the city, whatever your destination.

Guest access

Guests enjoy a private room fitted with a comfortable, full-sized, protected mattress, a spacious bureau, storage drawers, and closet for use, a writing desk with chair, ceiling fan, and free wifi. Fluffy, fresh towels and crisp sheets are included. Air conditioning is available in the summer.

Guests have 24-hour access to the building and apartment with your key set. The entire apartment is accessible for your use, including a newly-renovated, shared bathroom with full bathtub; our living room with sitting areas, TV with Roku and DVD player, breakfast table, and large browsable art library; and a well-appointed kitchen with gas stove, pots, pans, refrigerator, espresso machine and juicer. Coin-operated washers and dryers are available in the building.

Safety for our guests is our priority, which is why the entire apartment is fitted with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguisher, and safety card.

Interaction with guests

We are both busy, working graduate students, so we are not regularly in the apartment during the day, but we welcome relaxing conversations and are happy to assist you over a cup of tea with recommendations for one of the numerous delicious dining options in the neighborhood, or helping you find your way to a college campus or train station.

The neighbourhood

Green tree-lined streets, friendly neighbors, and verdant gardens make this a pleasant neighborhood to call home. Easy access to city buses, trolleys and regional rail trains make getting around and downtown Philly simple. From Zagat-listed and award-winning dining options to beer halls and local diners, the restaurants and cafés on Baltimore Avenue feature global cuisines; we're happy to give recommendations for any appetite! A well-stocked grocery co-op down the street features organic and local produce, and a neighborhood gym offers our guests a 1-day pass for $15 or weekly pass for $25.

Getting around

Our building is very close to Philadelphia's 30th Street Station and is easily accessed via the 34 trolley; buses 21, 42, 52, and 64; and regional rail (49th Street Station, Media-Elwyn Line).

Connections for Amtrak and airport travelers to the 34 trolley are easy at 30th Street Station.

Free street parking in front of the building is always available.

Other things to note

Guests with feather allergies should be aware there are two poicephalus parrots that live in this apartment, separated from common areas in Victoria's room.

Victoria and Joe did a great job of communicating before our arrival, and Joe greeted us as planned and made us feel very welcome. We never met Victoria, but we were only really there to sleep and shower. The apartment was tastefully decorated and very clean, as shown in the photos. The birds were not too loud in the morning (the only time I heard them), but there was an upstairs neighbor that walked around all night - to be expected in an apartment so no big deal - just a little sleep disturbing. The only gripe we had was that the bed was not comfortable and a futon, not just a "double bed." It was only one night so not a deal breaker but I wouldn't have been able to do two nights.

Joe and Victoria have one of the most beautiful houses I've ever lived in. I feel tempted to come back and stay even though I'm moving right down the street!

Thank you for letting us stay at The Birdcage! While we didn't get to spend much time at the place on our short stay in Philly, Joe & Victoria's place is a cute little spot and a very short walk away from public transport that took us close to tourist spots (Benjamin Franklin parkway, City Hall etc). Would recommend staying here!

The room was nice and clean and the hand-over of the keys was very smooth. We only met Joe, who lives with Victoria, but he was super friendly and showed us around, even helping us out with some quarters we needed for washing. The appartment is located close to public transport and it's really quite. Overall, highly recommended!

This was a large, pleasant, airy room. We weren't in very much, so I only saw Victoria a couple of times, but she was quite nice and helpful. The neighborhood is fantastic!

Living with Vicki and Joe was a dream. Their friendly helpfulness made my three-month stay perfectly comfortable, and you never have to worry about being lonely with Vicki's adorable pet parrots Mo and Draco. I feel so lucky to be able to call Vicki my friend (and one who makes the yummiest brownies!) and I miss her dearly! They were incredibly gracious in helping me make the room feel like home and for three months it was. The apartment is beautiful and cosy and you will love it like your own in no time. Thank you so much for everything, Vicki, and I hope you're having the best time abroad Joe!

Hi! We're Vicki and Joe, two friends sharing a lovely space in West Philadelphia. Joe, a recent transplant from New York, is a graduate student specializing in Byzantine art history, specifically the portable object side. Vicki is a Philadelphia native, works at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and has a particular interest in all things Byzantine as well.

Our home and library reflect our interests and the apartment is decorated with a blend of vintage and modern. Additionally, we share the apartment with Vicki's two adorable parrots, Mo and Draco, who live in her room.

We are both great cooks, love trying new recipes, and opening our home to entertain our friends. We also enjoy taking advantage of what Philly has to offer in terms of arts, culture, food, and events. Vicki in particular knows the best music and food venues in town. Feel free to ask us for recommendations!

We look forward to welcoming you to our home!
