The apartment was lovely and in a great location with lots of nearby cafes and restaurants. Andy was a wonderful host, able to answer any questions I had and checking in with a phone call during my stay. Would definitely stay here again!

My stay at Andy's apartment was great, the apartment met my expectations and was as described with a lovely garden balcony that I enjoyed sitting out on at breakfast time. I had no trouble making the arrangements, Andy met me when I arrived and was super friendly. He showed me around and then left me to it, I had the apartment to myself. Its in a really great location with very easy access to everything. Thanks Andy!

There were both positives and negatives about our experience with Andy, who we never met face to face. Firstly, the flat is in an excellent location with a lovely leafy balcony, although the flat itself is very small (which would have been awkward, had Andy not chosen to leave us on our own). Great location aside, unfortunately, I need to be honest and give two stars, as various aspects of our stay were not as expected, and anxiety was caused by very poor communication and disorganisation on Andy's part. Initially, Andy took a long time replying to msgs (ie 20 hrs) and when he did, he didn't address my specific questions. There had been no set check-in time, but when we were already on the road he msgd to say he would not be there to greet us as he had decided to go away, adding that he would leave the key at a cafe, which shut at 4.30pm. However, we would not be arriving in Melb from interstate until 8.30! At that stage, we had no way of communicating with him to let him know this, other than ABnB website, and his responses were very delayed. We also tried unsuccessfully to communicate with the cafe to organise something but they didnt respond to calls, text msgs or voice mail msgs. We eventually had to rely on our friend who was busy preparing to get married to pick up the key. Very inconvenient and unnecessarily stressful. Upon arrival, there was no handbook, guide, or even simply written note to explain house rules etc. Though he had made an effort to ask us to water his plants for him, nothing else was made clear. At midnight we worked out for ourselves that we were to sleep in Andy's own bed, rather than in a dedicated guest room, which was unexpected and ultimately unpleasant, as it was clear the sheets weren't clean. When asked about the cleanliness of the bed linen, we were assured that it was clean, though there was plenty of evidence to the contrary. Nothing was clear. For example, whilst there was a towel hanging on a rail in the bathroom, at no point was it made clear that it was for our use. He was made aware of two people staying there, yet only one towel was visible, with no evidence of any others. It was not clear what we could/couldn't do or use/not use etc, which made us feel very uncomfortable. There was no closet space, as advertised; the closet was filled with his clothes and shoes and there was one spare coat hanger. When finally provided with a direct mobile number, it required a succession of text messages to extract information that should have been provided up front, ie even the wifi password, and whether there was any unit-specific carpark etc (turns out the 'P' for parking in his ad refers to street parking). Based on other reviews, people seem generally happy with Andy, so I'm...

Response from Andy:
Thanks for your feedback as you mentioned previous guests have had a very positive and enjoyable experience in what is a pretty standard sized two bedroom apartment; so it is regrettable that your stay was not as you expected. More often than not guests will have the apartment to themselves and as I explained when we discussed your questions, usually I would be around to orient new guests and hand over the key but on this occasion I was out of town. It’s a great suggestion to provide an ‘instruction sheet’ for those odd occasions when I am not nearby and had I known that picking up the key was going to be a problem for you I would have more than happily made another arrangement. As with many ‘air bnb’ stays its not unusual for hosts to rent out their own rooms and being the very central location that it is, we are very lucky that parking is more than sufficient with free 24 hour parking directly across the road. I’m glad you enjoyed the lush balcony and I wish you happy future travels. Cheers Andy

Although we only stayed for one night, we strongly recommend this place if you're wanting to spend some time in the Northcote and Fitzroy region, which you should! Andy's place was great. Thinking we were renting a private room, he ended up leaving us to the entire place. He's got everything you need and the tram literally runs right by. At his listed price, I'm quite shocked his place isn't more popular. Great stay, great guy!
