Looking at the house straight on from the lava wall.Nice spot for breakfast or lunch, and a little stargazing and something in the evening.

Charming oceanview farmhouse, off the grid getaway in Pahoa, Hawaii.

(PRICE INCLUDES 13.41% daily Hawaii Transient & Excise Tax.)

Located at the end of a private road, our Pohoiki farmhouse (pronounced locally as Po-iki) is a tastefully appointed, off the grid home with magnificent ocean view. The home sits on five cleared acres and is planted with a variety of tropical flowers, exotic fruit trees, and even a testbed for growing tea. This is an off the grid retreat for visitors looking for serenity and a soothing, entirely different sort of Hawai'i vacation.

The house features a full kitchen; separate bedroom; large bathroom with walk-in shower and hand-crafted acacia wood counter; cozy living room with TV/DVD player; a dining room that comfortably seats four to six; and a large lanai featuring magnificent ocean views during the day and sublime stargazing at night.

This is our home, and although work keeps us away from Hawai'i right now we’d like it to be your home as well. Sit on the lanai in the morning sipping coffee and eating papaya from one of the local markets while listening to the slow distant rumble of the ocean. Easily visit the many nearby wonders of Puna: Ahalanui Park warm pond, Pohoiki boat ramp, the Vacationland tide pools, the Kalapana lava flow, Pahoa Town, mystical Red Road...Wander the yard at sunset with a glass of wine while the sun paints the skies over Puna pink. Fall asleep to the nighttime rains…

Because the house is positioned on a hill 400 feet above sea level, the trade winds blow regularly and keep it almost exclusively mosquito-free, which is a bit of a marvel for east Hawai'i.

We are less than 10 minutes by car from old Pahoa Town (restaurants, gas, groceries, wonderful olympic-sized swimming pool) and a mere few miles from the Pohoiki boat ramp and the geothermally heated warm pond. Kalapana is 20 minutes south; the Hilo airport about 35 to 40 minutes north; Kilauea crater about 45 minutes. The location is ideal for exploring the eastern side of the island.

Sometimes it’s difficult to remember that our farmhouse is off the grid, but it is. We have plenty of county water, which is easily and quickly heated by an on-demand propane water heater. The stove and oven are propane as well, and the electrical is solar. The living is convenient and comfortable, however the experience is decidedly more detached – much less energy consumptive, much less plugged-in. Life on Pohoiki Road is in synch with the rythms of the day. Life is simpler here.

Our experience at Arvin and Jeff's house was just amazing. The description is perfect and you certainly feel 'off the grid', which was exactly what we were looking for. The views are amazing and the house is beautifully decorated, a great little home for our 2 night stay.

Amazing place. The pictures don't fully do it justice or overly embellish - the land is just wide open and you can see the sparkling ocean in the morning when the sun rises. Amazing plants and landscaping. Little geckos all over the lanai are a treat. You are definitely off the grid (with a couple neighbors about 1/4 mile on either side) but still feels incredibly private. Pahoa is a really cool town with some interested characters and has some amazing food (Kaleo's, the NY Pizza place, Ning's - all great). Scenic drives to a lot of nearby places - Kehena black sand beach (clothing optional) was a trip. Drives back and forth can be time consuming, so make sure you prepare to eat out or buy a lot of groceries on your way in. Solar power wasn't an issue at all, but we were in bed pretty early and just had a couple lights on and charged our devices. Internet/Wifi was great the whole time, just be careful with cellphone service. House was super clean and well laid out with a lot of essentials there for you, owners and caretaker super responsive and helpful if you have questions. Would love to come back here some day.

If you are looking for a place to really relax this is the place. We just spend three weeks in Arvin and Jeffs house and we love it. We have stayed here before and it is perfect. The house is ideal for two people and it has great surroundings. The large lanai is perfect for breakfast watching the sunrise over the ocean and for stargazing at night. The Puna area is not like the rest of Hawaii. It is special both the landscape and the people and lifestyle. Go to Uncle Robert Wednesday at 5 pm or take a lava boat to see where lava meets the sea - spectacular! Go to the market in Pahoa, Makuu or Hilo. We will be back. Mahalo Karina and Jørgen

Dear Arvin and Jeff Thank you for letting us stay in your great house. We really enjoyed the privacy and the beautiful property. We had the opportunity to pick citrus fruits in the garden and it was great. Also we find that the layout of the house suits us great, we especially enjoyed the large lanai and you can actually work in the kitchen. The house is located in a very nice area and we especially enjoyed the Black Beach (Kehena). You have to drive for 15 min, but it is worth it. Very nice Beach and you meet all sort of people there. The house is also close to the thermal ponds and the tidal pools (snorkling). We will come back next time in Hawaii (hopefully next year) and would love to stay in your house again.

We had a wonderful stay in the off-grid Pohoiki house. The house is an absolute gem in paradise setting. Do not be scared by the off-grid description, the house is very comfortable, the only thing "missing" is WiFi, but we had good reception with both t-mobile and AT&T. The only disadvantage is that for us the house is on the other side of the globe.... We never met Arvin and Jeff, but they left clear instructions and a friendly housekeeper was always available (although we did not need him).

This place is a little slice of paradise. If you want to get away from it all and really zone out you can't go wrong here. The photos don't do justice to the beautiful setting and and lovely touch Jeff and Arvin have brought to this property - my wife and I were really blown away when we arrived. It is an isolated property so may not suit everybody but is very modern and comfortable inside. Mat, the caretaker, is very helpful, and was immediately over to help us out when we had a small issue with the power. Can't recommend Jeff and Arvin's home enough.

This is our home. Work has us on the mainland for much of the time, so we decided to share our private bit of unplugged Puna paradise with visitors looking for a serene getaway on the Big Island.
