Wind down and pick up the local pace in this lodge on Sri Lanka's northernmost Point Pedro. Well-kept, comfortable, and with a family atmosphere due to the sweet care of Amma, your host.

Price is for a double bedroom with attached bathroom.

The space

Gautam Lodge is a neat little house in a quiet little street close to the city center, but even closer to the beach. With two spacious rooms, clean sanitation, a nice living room and a little kitchen to make yourself a tea, the whole has a definite homely feel to it. On late afternoons the porch is a good place to sit and read, try to pick a mango from the overhanging tree, or play with the neighbor's puppies (be quick, those things grow fast!!).

Interaction with guests

We stumbled across the Gautam Lodge when our Dutch colleague Marten traveled to Point Pedro to join the fishermen on a trip out to sea. On his way to the beach he passed the lodge, knocked and was greeted by the venerable Mr. Gautam himself… in Dutch. Turns out Mr. Gautam has been living in the Netherlands for decades and was on his yearly visit to his neighbor and sister Amma, your host. Amma (aunty) is a very gentle, hospitable woman who is quietly enjoying her pension with her husband, after a life of elementary school teaching.

The place was just as described and we had the whole place to ourselves. We had a room with attached bathroom with outside terrace and an additional larger bathroom. There was also a big fridge freezer available to use. Very basic and simple but very clean and good experience. The daughter was the main communicator and was very helpful and a lovely girl. Dinner and breakfast was served inside Amma's place and was great to see inside a Sri Lankan home and be welcomed inside. Be warned as there was some very loud cock a doodle doodling at about 4.30am which did not let up - ear plugs are highly recommended! Great place to relax and unwind for a couple of days(URL HIDDEN)

Located a only a few hundred meters from the main town square and even fewer to the sea Gautum is a great little spot. The rooms are comfortable very reasonably priced and the food served inside the family home tasty. There's is space to sit on the porch and relax in the evenings with a nice atmosphere. It's a good base to explore the surrounding area which is relatively untouched by tourism and I am sure will not stay that way for long, head east along the coast to find fishing villages and beaches all to yourself. Lovely place to stay with great hosts, I would go again

We had a really great stay in Point Pedro. It is a very local, laid back town where you can stroll along the seafront and watch the fishermen, chat to the locals and laugh with the children. We were lucky to find ourselves in the midst of a Hindu festival in the evening, any experience that you cannot have on a day trip. Gautum Lodge is a very basic accommodation, clean with cold shower and tap but no sink, just 2 buckets. Small double bed with clean sheets and towel. When we went there was only access to one room and the sitting room and patio... no kitchen or facilities to make tea. We were given breakfast for £1.50 ...eggs and bread, tea, salad. We communicated with a bit of English and a lot of sign language! Friendly hosts who live next door but one. It is near the bus station, you don't need a tuk tuk unless your bags are extremely heavy! Just head straight towards the sea with the fish market to your right. This is an area that won't remain unspoilt for long. At present it is fantastic if you enjoy being a part of the local life. Walk past the lighthouse and you come to a long stretch of open beach...not a lot of shade though and its best to swim in shorts and tee shirt! Watch the currents..I found a natural lagoon amidst the boats at that end of the beach and it was perfect. Neverbeen are a great organization who are quick to reply to you, and who act as a bridge to enable local people to rent out their homes.

Overall we had a lovely stay at Amma's. Initially we were a bit disappointed with the room - there were cockroaches everywhere, only a shower screen to separate the toilet from the bed and the bed was the smallest "double" with my partner and I struggling to both fit on. However, Amma's food made up for the room and more, presenting us with some of the most delicious food we had on our stay. It wasn't the cheapest though. I am glad we stayed at Amma's and recommend it regardless of the room - the family is kind, welcoming and lovely, and there aren't a lot of options in Jaffna for this kind of setup.

Point Pedro is a lovely place to stay - beautiful fishing village, far from any bustle of bigger towns and surrounded by beaches. Point Pedro is a very quick, easy bus trip away from Jaffna with buses running every half hour from point Pedro. The stay at Amma's wasn't quite what the pictures on the site made it out to be. The sheets didn't quite cover the mattress and the bed was far too short for anyone taller than 5'9". The food cooked for us was delicious, however questions were evaded on how much meals would cost and we felt stung when hit with the bill, especially as we were on a budget. Would totally recommend staying in Point Pedro though.

Amma was very welcoming. Her daughter spoke English quite well, so we could get some ideas from her. It is about a 5 minute tuk tuk ride to the area of the beach where you can swim and it was one of the nicest beaches I've swum at in Sri Lanka. Only goats watch you! We didn't see any tourists in Point Pedro which was really nice, and the locals are really friendly. I recommend this place if you want to get "off the beaten track" easily.

Neverbeen offers a wide variety of rare homes off the beaten track, from fisherman's huts and tree houses to heritage homes and tea estates. Our team hand-picks and visits every home and meet all hosts to make ensure guests have a positively memorable stay in places they've never been.

We provide travellers and home owners in challenging locations with access to one another, by offering communication services, online marketing services and tourism training, so that locals can make a living off their home and travellers can get to stay in places they have never been.

As such, Neverbeen works for a world in which everyone has the chance to earn income by renting out their home, regardless of language, internet access and tourism experience.

In Sri Lanka, Dishan manages our growing group of homes in cooperation with our scouts, while Rohan creates listings and provides service. In Amsterdam, Marten works out international growth plans. Our team of in-house programmers is constantly developing the platform itself and Ernst & Young does our finances.

The first country we're active in is Sri Lanka, a beautiful country with many undiscovered places to stay. Due to it recently having opened up to tourism after decades of conflict, it is a great place to start and pilot the Neverbeen concept. We plan to expand to ten countries before the end of 2017.
