Enjoy sunsets from the deck up at the house or at lakeside. There's nothing better than lounging in the red chairs under the stars, toasting marshmallows in the fire pit and telling a tall tale or two.
A stroll on the lakeside road is a lovely in either direction.
For a nice little hike in the woods, there is also a beautiful trail nearby. Look for the waterfalls!

Description

The space

Charming waterfront cottage on the east side of Lake Cayuga. Amazing sunsets! Comfortably sleeps 3 couples & a single, or 2 couples & 4 children. ROKU TV's, classic video games, lots of movies, Direct TV at peak season. 25 mins from Ithaca, 10-15 mins to Aurora.

Cottage Atwater is “Paradise on Lake Cayuga" and features the most amazing sunsets, a great place to get away from it all, to be surrounded by the beauty of nature and, yet, have access to all the amenities of civilization.

Just 25 minutes from Ithaca and 9 minutes from Aurora, it's close enough to Cornell, Ithaca College and Wells College for special events. Celebrate later in a glorious location.

At the waterfront, there is a dock and a mooring for your boat, as well as an area on the dock especially for your Kayak or canoe. Relax on comfortable chairs and roast marshmallow under the stars in the fire pit. The boat shed holds rafts and “noodles" for play in the lake.

Up at the house, on the deck, there are chaise lounges, tables, chairs and umbrellas for enjoyment of the grand view outside during the warmer months. Barbeque in the back on the propane-powered grill is just outside the kitchen door.

Winter rentals are lovely, too! Due to its location, it may be snowing heavily up the hill but down by the lake, the setting sun warms the land and there is little accumulation. The kitchen is equipped with a brand new electric oven and refrigerator, a microwave and fully stocked with kitchen utensils, pots and pans.

There's plenty of parking, up at the house and down the driveway on the waterfront road. The driveway is a bit steep, so 4WD or AWD is preferred.

The house features a comfortably furnished Living Room/Dining Room area with a High Definition TV. Direct TV is available upon request and there is an extensive library of DVDs and classic VHS tapes for your enjoyment. We provide linens and towels, clean and fresh for your arrival and the housecleaning is on us at the end of your stay.

On the first floor, the Master Bedroom features a spectacular view of the lake. There is also a single bedroom with a twin bed and a recliner, which makes it nice for a Senior to kick back and get their feet up in the quiet of their own space. The bathroom is centrally located there, as well.

Upstairs, in the sleeping loft, on the south side, there is a queen-size bed and a futon chaise, separated by half wall and a Victorian screen. On the other end, there is a high-riser that transforms into a King-size bed, and another Twin bed. The central area has a TV equipped with a DVD player, VHS machine and a large collection of ‘old school' video game systems and games. There is also a Futon couch that converts to a Full-size bed. This is a great area for the kids to hang out.

For your convenience, a layout of the floor plan is included in the photos.

Guests will have access to the entire house, the waterfront, the boat shed and the garage for your bicycles. Did I mention that this is a fantastic place to go biking? And through Wine Country, no less! The boatlift can be made available on a case-by-case basis and for an extra charge and deposit.

Although the chances are remote that we, the owners, will be in the area at the time of your rental, we do have local assistants who will make themselves available to you in the event of a problem of some sort. Their phone numbers will be made available to you, as well as ours, in our correspondence and also in the Information Booklet provided. For general questions, we are best reached immediately by text message.

We are located on a lovely waterfront road that, long ago, used to be a train track running alongside Lake Cayuga. Now a quiet haven of vacation and permanent homes, the junction of the road leading down the hill from the main road was once a bustling trade center, complete with a Post Office, a ferry and a train station.

To the south of our house is a permanent residence. A tall hedge between both driveways separates our properties. To the north and the east is undeveloped so, overall, there is a great sense of privacy and solitude.

This is a wonderful place to relax, to catch up on your reading, to write the Great American novel, to get out on the lake, go biking and enjoy the fresh air – the possibilities are endless.

In as much as we are lakeside, in the country, there is no public transportation to and from Cottage Atwater.
Within Ithaca itself, there is what they call the TCAT or Tomkins Consolidated Area Transit.
Public Transportation by bus from the NY Metropolitan Area is provided by Coach USA via the ShortLine Bus.
There are 4 airports within 50 miles of King Ferry. Their proximities, closest to furthest, are as follows; Tomkins County Airport, Syracuse Hancock Airport, Binghamton Regional Airport and Elmira/Corning Regional Airport. Transportation to and from these airports is most likely best handled by securing rental cars there.

There is a window air conditioner in the Master Bedroom and one can be made available in the small bedroom, although due to it's location on the floor plan, that room always seems to stay cool, even on the hottest days. A window air conditioner can also be installed in the Dining area window upon request. Fans are provided throughout the house.
The water comes from the lake. Although it runs through a filtered and chlorinated system prior to reaching the tap, we do not drink it. Prior to your arrival, we will stock the house with a case of 20 oz. bottles, as well as 10 one gallon jugs to use for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth.
An Information Booklet is also provided here online and on the premises with all the rules and nuances of the house. Someone is always available to answer any questions you may have during your stay – text messaging being the best way to get immediate attention.
Brochures, maps and pamphlets will be available on premises for your reference, as well.

Interaction with guests

Please contact me via cell . We have very capable assistants who can be available if anything comes up that needs immediate attention.

The neighbourhood

This area of the lake is especially notable for its amazing sunsets. Watching the sun set is a favorite pastime around here. Also waterskiing, fishing (the lake is stocked) and swimming. There are also waterfront restaurants, vineyards and State Parks on the other side which make for fun and romantic excursions by boat.

Getting around

Since this lakeside cabin is smack-dab in the middle of farm and vineyard country, there is no public transportation. Cars are a must, preferably one with AWD or FWD since the driveway and some of the roads to the cottage are a bit steep. Bicycles are also a lot of fun. There's nothing like riding up on the ridge roads overlooking the lake. No cars to speak of and fabulous views!

Other things to note

Please note that the water in the sinks and shower comes from the lake. It is fine for washing dishes and bathing but not for drinking or cooking. As a result, we are happy provide you with the first 6 gallons of drinking water and a case of bottled water.

House Rules
No smoking
No parties or events
Check-in is after 3PM

This cottage comfortably sleeps 7 people. We welcome extra guests during the day and evening but must limit the number who stay overnight to 7.

We respectfully ask that our tenants be considerate of the neighbors in terms of noise levels and to respect their privacy.

We respectfully ask that our tenants be considerate of the neighbors along the road leading to the cottage by observing a 10 mph speed limit. The road runs between the lakefront and the houses up above and more often than not, people and children are crossing from their homes to their docks.

We allow pets on a case-by-case basis.

Smoking is not permitted in the house.

The gravel driveway is especially steep about a third of the way up , which makes 4WD or AWD preferable vehicle options.

Please be aware that, as is the case with most houses along the lake in this area, the water in the house comes from the lake and we do not drink it. As a result, we offer a starter supply of 6 gallons of bottled water, a case of 24 individual bottles and 3 gallons tap water from my mother's kitchen tap (Cortland Public Water Works). We use this for brushing teeth, etc. but it is also suitable for cooking and drinking.

In 1978, my parents just happened to discover a rustic and charming hunting cabin in the woods on Lake Cayuga. Ever since then, the area has held a special place in my heart. Many years later, my husband and I bought our own place just up the road. In the Spring, Summer and Fall, we enjoy walking, biking, hiking, waterskiing, swimming and exploring the lake. There is a lot to do by boat; vineyards with dock access, concerts at Taughannock Park in the summer and restaurants directly across the lake. Ithaca, Aurora and Auburn all offer Museums, Shops and Historic attractions, as well.

Every summer, I convert the garage into an art studio, where my family and I spend many an hour painting. All guests so inclined have been known to join us and if you happen to be here in the summer and the studio is set up, we welcome you to take advantage of the space to make art. Feel free to use any and all canvases and supplies on hand.

Inspired by the solitude of the lake, my family and I spend blissful hours and days reading, writing, watching movies and unwinding, as well as, waterskiing, making music and grilling outside. We are relaxing and on vacation! Someday, this Paradise will be our permanent home but, until then, please share it with us. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Warm in the winter, breezy in the summer, the house is comfortable and the furnishings aren’t at all fussy. Please feel free to put your feet up! Find the joy in each day.
