The space

The Rotunda is a designer-decorated studio apartment that is part of Hacienda on the Hill in Ajijic, a very unique property that is over 200 years old. In fact, it is one of the oldest haciendas on Lake Chapala. Originally a seminary, it has played several other roles in its lifetime including that of gold mine.
The Rotunda has large windows, a king-size bed, a kitchenette with microwave, coffee maker toaster and a small fridge, a large sitting area, a bathroom with shower, cable TV, DVD and WiFi. This studio apartment retains some Mexican detail, including tile floors and an original quadrafoil window. The views from Hacienda on the Hill, some of the best in Ajijic, will take your breath away: Lake Chapala, Mount Garcia, and the village of Ajijic below, other mountains above. Hacienda on the Hill is ideally located just a 10-minute walk to the centre of the village. Do you feel like taking a hike? The best hiking trail up the mountain to either the “chapel” or the waterfall starts just outside your door.
Note: An unexpected surprise awaits you on the grounds – an exquisite tiny consecrated chapel.

Ms. Leslie's estate is simply divine. Pictures don't truly translate the grandeur and beauty. Walking distance to everything, but secluded and serene enough to just relax with a good book. She's also an amazing cook, so you don't have to leave the house if you don't want to. (Try her lasagna, so delicious). The grounds are meticulously manicured with stunning views of the lake from every angle. Rocio, is more than just the housekeeper; more like a vital resource so helpful when in need. Other reviewers speak of the house dogs, you too will love them. (Hi Noble) They took my Foley into their pack as one of their own and they ruled the yard. He had so much fun. We both felt like family. I stayed at the Rotunda on the Hill about 10 days, and throughly enjoyed my visit. As a female adventurer traveling alone, I strongly recommend staying here. (I speak from experience). My visit to Ajijic was "okay," my stay with Ms. Leslie definitely being the highlight of the trip. I can't wait to see her again.

My time in the Rotunda surpassed my expectations - and my expectations were very high! Leslie has created a true magical oasis at the Hacienda on the Hill. She generously provided breakfast fixin's to get me started, and I loved having the 4 puppies as company. They were quite entertaining! Rocio lives on site and was always available for questions, as was Leslie. Definitely take advantage of having them arrange an airport pick-up with Toni. As for Ajijic - challenge yourself to the hike up the hill behind the Hacienda to the chapel. Take the local bus to the thermal pools at Hotel Balneario in neighboring San Juan Cosala for a real treat. If you walk uphill from the town to the Hacienda every day, you will return home in great shape! The month of May was very quiet around town, and it's quite warm, which I enjoyed, but maybe not for everyone.

We were welcomed by Leslie upon our arrival, she made us feel very welcome and at home immediately. The Rotunda was exactly as we had anticipated with old world charm, tasteful decorating and a breathtaking view of the village below and the lake surrounded by mountains. It was a joy to be out every morning and night enjoying the birds and amazing sunsets. We enjoyed the company of Nobel, Oskar, Shadow and Luli (Leslie's dogs) who came to visit with us frequently. Leslie was a very helpful hostess who even invited us to her wonderful Christmas Eve party with carols in the chapel! Very fun event! The walk down to the village every morning was delightful with a stop at our favorite juice stand, continuing on to discover the many shops, restaurants and sights along the Lakeside area. Rocio (Leslie's assistant) was a wonderful lady with a fun zesty spirit who kept our suite tidy and clean. Also, Rocio's husband, Marco kept the grounds impeccable on a daily basis. We had an awesome stay and look forward to coming back.

Even though I was nearly 2 hours late arriving due to a mix-up with my rental car, Leslie very graciously welcomed me to Hacienda on the Hill. What an amazing and magical place! The Rotunda was perfect in every way - perfect size, cozy and comfortable, gorgeous views of Ajijic, Lake Chapala and Mount Garcia - it was just amazing. Leslie's wonderful pups Noble, Oskar, Lady and Luli made sure I didn't miss my own pup too terribly, spending as much time with me in the Rotunda as I would let them. Leslie made sure I had the basics for breakfast, plus fruit and some vegetables, saving me from needing to make a store run right away. If I need to make another trip to Lakeside before our big move south of the border, I hope that Hacienda on the Hill will be available. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for the best place to stay in all of Ajijic!

It's 6 out of 5!! It's been one of the most pleasant stays with AirBNB. Leslie is a very nice and welcoming person. She gave us lots of tips and advises about Ajijic. Her beautiful fluffy dogs are so joyful and funny - one can't but love them from the first sight! The garden with hummingbirds, the chapel, the swimming pool - everything is so picturesque and stunning! The rotunda itself is extremely cozy and peaceful, with lots of finely selected decorations and household amenities. We felt absolutely at home. Highly recommend it for couples:). Be sure to ask Leslie to tell you the story of the buildings - we found it not less interesting then any of novels by Marquez. We will definitely stay here again next time in Ajijic!
