The building is an eclectic and creative project, art abounds throughout the unit with a keen interest toward reuse. The apartment in many ways acts as a reminder to our love of the planet, rescuing furnishings/art/decor & giving them a new audience to appreciate their detail. We love rainbows reflected by leaded glass windows and french doors. We appreciate the quiet of the long spacious suites and soaking in the old clawfoot tubs. And community!

The space

This ground floor flat is airy and spacious. The apartment is set-up for guests to enjoy the living room, dining room, well-equipped kitchen, and two bathrooms as a communal space, very similar to how a hostel functions. The 2000 sqft unit has three private bedrooms toward the back of the apartment with ample closet and drawer space. Visible from the front windows is Rockefeller Park, one of Cleveland’s treasured forested greenways, where deer and a plethora of birds congregate. You'll feel enchanted enough to meditate, write a book, dance or sing. This 100 year old building with crown moldings & wood floors is not shiny sleek, but it’s old world charm act as a reminder to the importance of a well-paced life (with Wi-Fi, of course).

This building is dedicated to art, literature, music, meditation, and gardening with the occasional dinner, movie, music salon or art exhibition popping up somewhere. Our learning garden is an active space spring through fall. It’s an easy space to lean into, but be careful not to fall thru the looking glass.

Guest access

You enjoy access to kitchen, & all common areas. Gently used odds and ends fill this eclectic space. Our kitchen is a throwback to your grandparents, equipped with gas stoves and cast iron sinks, although with a microwave, blender and coffee & tea makers, for guest’s convenience.

Coffee, tea, oatmeal, eggs & bread are usually in the kitchen & pantry.

You will find what you need for sleep, studying, lounging and cooking (including desk, lamp, chair, surge protector)

Wi-Fi exists in the privacy of your room, the kitchen and den.

Guest may access movie theater, garden, and gallery, and books (with permission or cooperative's small users fee).

Linen & bedding for long term (more than one month) will be worked out, and personalized for individual use, upon arriving. A separate but reasonable security deposit or fee may apply under some circumstances.

Interaction with guests

Interaction with Guests
As often as you like. We will help acclimate you to the building and the neighborhood. We’re long-term art loving Clevelanders who are passionate about our city, so if you’re looking for off-the-beaten path attractions, art openings, music/performance-based events, or museums we’d be more than happy to assist.

We don't mind hosting new members of the airbnb community, but we do require anyone requesting to stay at our home to have a completed profile (this includes a photo).

Pretty basic--clean up after yourself.
We appreciate "low maintenance" guests very much.
put on a sweater during winter (or wear layers). This more eco logical than requesting to turn up the heat (the less carbon burned the better). Help watch energy use by taking brief showers ("green" experts say 5 minutes is enough).TURN power adapter. Living room light by the window may be turned off in the morning and turned on at dusk. This building, and each apartment suite within it, is a work in progress that involves tremendous hard work; so we sincerely appreciate your help leaving each room as good as or better than you found it. This is our humble home and community space. We truly appreciate your help maintaining it!

We are an understaffed, unpaid grassroots/d-i-y endeavor. We wear a lot of hats in our efforts to keep this beautiful old building on its feet. We labor with our bodies in doing so. And we are septuagenarians who are young at heart. This place is not for everyone. It is not a hotel or a hostel. It exists in a world we make up one day at a time—with your help and understanding. You are a piece of a very elaborate puzzle, 3 floors and an English basement We are very particular when guests are invited here.

We would be very grateful if you would keep the following in mind. The following guidelines are basic to most living quarters. I detail them here for the purpose of clarity.

—Unplug hair dryers, electrical heaters when finished with them.

—Turn off surge protectors when finished with them.

—Use coasters each time you put a drinking glass down on a wood surface, table or desk.

—Keep all belongings, including bedcovers, clothes, off of floors. Luggage racks are provided for your use. No shoes on bed.

—If you know that your clothes are soiled or dirty, consider changing to something clean before sitting down or laying on furniture.

—Do not eat food in bedrooms or other places.

—speak with us if you wish for us to remove or to rearrange—any extra pillows, bed coverings, or chairs that may be in the way.

—Returning dining room & kitchen chairs to their proper position after getting up from the table. Sraighten up common-room pillows after you are done with them. Pillows are not meant to be sat upon .

—We appreciate lights off when finished with their use. This includes turning off any front room lamp left on (for security reasons) overnight.

—Do not lock chains on any door.

Return linen in the condition you received it in (or better?). Fill free to use ours or bring your own. Removing stains and ground-in dirt or blood on any furniture or linen might cost you (as much as it does us for soaking and cleaning).. We understand accidents so please be careful.

The kitchen & bathroom are community workhorses. Keep them clean, take care of any messes and help us maintain them for the next person. Remember, these are shared spaces.

—Wash tub after showering and bathing and keep sinks (and dish racks) clear. We provide environmentally friendly cleansers and cleaning cloths in each bathroom. Face bowls should be

—REFILL WATER PITCHERS. Filters are like fish. They need to be submerged in water at all times.

—Water is sacred. Do not waste it, report drips. Do not wash dishes one at a time. A dish pan (located directly under the sink) is provided for soaking and washing dishes (and saving grace)

—Remove all spoiled, cooked, outdated food from the kitchen. plus take-out and their containers from

—Close Toilet lids. Please clean up any drips, spills or other accidents (particularly any body fluids)

—We provide recycling and compost containers for all residents. But we are not prepared to handle excess consumer trash such as empty shoe boxes, and similar packaging.

—Trash receptacles exist in your room or study for use. Feel free to empty them before leaving!

—Compost vegetables, fruit, coffee grinds and yolk free egg shells. No meat, fish, bread, bones or oil (they attract rodents) or any kind. Used oil goes into the container provided for such.

—Forgive our appearance. We are a WORK-in-PROGRESS. Hallway stairs can become unsightly when we are plastering, painting or making other repairs.

—This building is a catalogue of countless bad consumer-driven remodelings undertaken over the last 100+years. We live with these botched jobs, poor plastering, paint, plumbing and (URL HIDDEN) as long as they are functional and harmless. In the interest of ecology we try to avoid committing more garbage to the land fill.

Management operates the gas fireplace in the front living room for the convenience of extra warmth.

Respecting the premises and keeping common areas tidy is all we ask. It's all about the flow...of good energy.

Arcey and Julie are lovingly restoring this six flat unit to it's original glory. It is a work in progress and if you're open to the experience there is magic in the building and the hearts of your hosts. I arrived around 9pm and was met by Arcey and Julie and we immediately hit it off and conversation flowed. Julie ended up making dinner and we stayed up for the next couple of hours just talking...remember when we used to have conversations with people? These two are masters of the art. Now the thing you have to know is that this is an old building...over 100 years (URL HIDDEN) it's not going to have the feel of the Marriott down the street. And I'll be real, I don't think I ever got hot water in the bathroom...warm at best. But what I did get made up for that 100x over. A tour of the art created by both Julie and her mother which is throughout the flats. The stories behind the art. The open hearts and generous conversation. These will live with me well past the memory of a luke warm shower. I feel like I met more than hosts...I met friends.

Deanna, We treasure you and the memories of your visit. We will continue our efforts to do our support those who come our way with all the energy, love, and hot water we can muster (hmmm... perhaps we turned it down too low to make sure it wasn't too hot, or there were just too many people showering at the same time... will look into it)! Thanks for bringing so much truth, positivity and light. Your peace and kindness is what the world needs now and always.

My stay was amazing, I couldn't have asked for better hosts. Julie and Arcey were warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful, and everything I could have needed was in the apartment. The space itself was large and perfect for hanging out, cooking, studying, and whatever I needed to do, and everything was beautifully decorated. The neighborhood wasn't the best so you have to be semi-aware of your surroundings when you're out, but I felt very safe and Julie and Arcey were extremely accessible so I was very taken care of. In terms of distance from the business district, the location is pretty excellent, within walking distance of Case, museums, and the University Circle neighborhood, plus the place was right across from a gorgeous park. I had an internship right in the heart of the downtown area and it was about a 20 minute drive. Overall, the experience was excellent, and Julie and Arcey, again, are incredible hosts - Arcey, for example, was always offering food and company, and checked up frequently to see how things were going. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better place to stay.

Sylvia, you are amazing. We are very grateful for you stay and for this wonderful detailed review. It certainly is indicative of your thoughtfulness and inquiring nature. Hey, don't be a stranger should you ever have need to pass this way again or even to visit out of nostalgia decades hence (if we are still alive and around lol). Mi casa su casa. Be our guest. Always. We love you very much and Orange Cat sends his regards. Taking him into your life as you did that day impressed us about the nature of your heart, sensitivity and generosity very much! Study well, let us know if you need anything (especially books as I ponder which ones to depart with). See you in Chicago. A meal on us one day! Peace, Arcey p.s. we mad some mad changes to the apartment after you left. It was really a way of soaking up the energy the three of you left and reminiscing with gratitude. The improvements were made with your spirits in mind. I will forward a picture soon!

Arcey and his partner are very nice, genuine hard working people. Willing to help out in any way that they can, whether that be giving you a lift to go get a drink or to make a recommendation for things to do and see. The house is very cool if you are into early 1900's homes. It's not completely renovated yet, but it looks great. They have a lot of really nice antiques, it's a good amount of space, everything is comfortable and I quite enjoyed my bath in the 1950's styled bathroom. Very nice and unique decor and furniture that is thoughtfully put together. Would definately recommend, especially for a woman traveling alone as it is secure and they keep an eye on you.

Arcey was a charitable and welcoming host who went out of his way to make sure that I had everything I needed. He provided some breakfast options as well as coffee and tea, and even offered transportation if necessary. The room had everything I needed as a short-term guest, and Arcey was willing to accomodate the odd hours of my coming and going. This place was also within walking distance of the Cleveland Museum of Art and many other local attractions. I had a very pleasant stay.

Arcey was once again an excellent host and made sure that I was comfortable and had anything I might need for my stay. The apartment is clean and comfortable, spacious and uniquely and artistically decorated. I'm sure I'll be staying at Arcey's again!

Thank you for a wonderful stay in Cleveland! I felt welcome in Arcey's home. We had some great conversation about books and life in general. And I got to meet some of Arcey's artist friends who were very friendly. They even invited me to join them to watch a movie in the downstairs movie theater, but I had to finish up some work. The study was perfect for catching up on said work on my laptop and the wifi worked great. The bed in the room was comfortable - not too firm, not too soft. And, I had no problem parking my car right in front of the building. Thank you again!

I'm a humble gardener, super/building manager. I enjoy making people happy and supporting artists, scholars, everyday people & other migrating creatures (monarchs, goldfinches, bees and seeds) in their daily efforts to live, work, create and thrive. Sharing meals, conversation, music, fine local liquid libations (such as Great Lakes Beer) and sweet soulful vibrations, is joy simplified and love in action. Expanding my awareness of the natural world means being a great host plant. I can dig it!
