Conveniently located in the centre of Blakeney (complete with village shop, church, fish and chip shop, pub, post office, and a lovely playground), Arch Cottage is just a stone’s throw from the ancient Forest of Dean so you’re spoilt for choice for things to see and do. Visit Beechenhurst for a walk around the famous forest Sculpture Trail, a cycle along the bike trails, scale up the Go Ape! climbing tower or enjoy a relaxing afternoon tea at the famous Speech House hotel. Lots of cycle hire options in the forest - with trails for all abilities including challenging downhill MTB routes. (Electric bike options if you’re less practiced on the hills!) The cottage has a solid fitted rack for your own bikes. (Pls bring locks.)
Step back into forest history at the Dean Heritage Centre, Clearwell Caves, Littledean Jail or Hopewell Colliery. For architecture, choose from St Briavels Castle, beautiful Tintern Abbey, statuesque Chepstow Castle or the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral. Other attractions include Dean Forest and Perrygrove steam railways (which have themed events/teas all year round), mysterious Puzzlewood, exciting Go Ape! and also the scenic Lydney Harbour - with a great little cafe.
The Forest is often the location for TV and film productions (eg. Sex Education and Star Wars), so follow a filming trail and search out where JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling found inspiration.
Enjoy a picnic and a paddle by Blakeney Straits stream in Wenchford, take a stroll or paddle around scenic Mallards Pike lake or picturesque Cannop Ponds.
The Wye Valley (great for canoeing in the Wye), Gloucester (with its beautiful cathedral), South Wales beaches and the ancient city of Bath are all within an hour’s drive.
Local maps and walking books are in the cottage. There’s a wide range of eateries to choose from (including Gloucestershire foodie favourite The Barn fish restaurant at Severn and Wye Smokery). Neighbourhood highlights

Arch Cottage sits in the heart of Blakeney - a traditional Forest of Dean village on the edge of the forest. It's easy to find and perfect for exploring the wide variety of attractions in the area.
Walkers, cyclists, riders, canoeists, climbers, fishermen and golfers are all well catered for and with the beautiful Forest of Dean just on your door step, it's perfect for a break with family or friends. The Forest is beautiful whatever the season and has a myriad of scenic footpaths and trails to discover.

There are many excellent pubs and restaurants within easy reach, with most being dog-friendly too. A favourite with Gloucestershire foodies is the excellent Barn fish restaurant at Severn and Wye Smokery.

Why not try Go Ape!, Puzzlewood, the two steam railways, multiple cycling trails, segways or stand up paddle-boarding - to name just a few of the fun options. There is even a giant maze and riding schools too. Many historical attractions can be found nearby including castles (Chepstow, Caldicot and Goodrich for example), cathedrals (Hereford and Gloucester), ancient woodlands and the beautiful ruins of Tintern Abbey, 18th century Littledean jail, decommissioned collieries and the atmospheric Clearwell caves (which used to be the source of ochre for painting).
In addition cider makers, gin distilleries, and cooking schools are all in the proximity. Visit Symonds Yat, Yat Rock or The Kymin for wonderful scenery, rock climbing or spotting wildlife such a peregrine falcons.
For the more adventurous, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, zip-wiring and diving are all within easy reach.
Wildlife lovers can enjoy an abundance of birds and even try to spot wild boar, deer or the recently introduced beavers and pine martens.
Explore the market towns throughout the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley with craft heritage centres, and tea and coffee shops to be discovered. There are two lovely local small cinemas which are well worth a visit on a rainy day.
Lydney has its own outdoor lido Bathurst swimming pool, a beautiful country estate (famous for its spring bluebells), a great craft centre and a picturesque harbour on the River Severn as some of its many attractions. The River Severn is also home to the unique Severn Bore - a seasonal tidal event several times a year offering the spectacle of surfing down the river.
The informative website visitdeanwye is an excellent source of information on the whole Forest of Dean and Wye Valley area.
Walking distance from the cottage you can find the village store, a post office, a friendly church, a very tasty fish and chip shop and a local village pub. There are some easy country walks right from Arch Cottage’s doorstep - around the local fields, woods and along streams (including ‘Fairy Glen’) and a disused railway.
