Conveniently located in the centre of Blakeney (and a few moments walk to village shop, church, fish and chips, post office and of course nearby local pub), Arch Cottage is just a stone’s throw from the ancient Forest of Dean. Enjoy a picnic and a paddle by Blakeney Straits stream in Wenchford, take a stroll or paddle around scenic Mallards Pike lake or picturesque Cannop Ponds. Visit Beechenhurst for a walk around the famous Sculpture Trail, a cycle along the bike trails, scale up the climbing tower or just enjoy a relaxing drink or gorgeous afternoon tea at the famous Speech House hotel. Cycle hire is available from several places within the forest and there are trails for all abilities including challenging downhill MTB routes. (Electric bike hire could be a great choice if you’re less practiced on the hills!) There is a solid bike rack fitted at the front of the cottage for your convenience if you bring your own bikes. (Remember to bring bike locks to secure your bikes to the rack.)
Step back into forest history at the Dean Heritage Centre, Clearwell Caves, Littledean Jail or Hopewell Colliery. For more architectural history, choose from St Briavels Castle, Tintern Abbey, Chepstow Castle or the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral. Other local attractions include Dean Forest Railway and Perrygrove railways (which have great themed events all year round), mysterious Puzzlewood, exciting Go Ape! and also the National Diving and Activity Centre near Chepstow.
The Forest has been an important location choice in lots of TV and film productions (such as Sex Education and Star Wars), so you can follow a filming trail or search out where JRR Tolkien and JK Rowling found inspiration for their works.
Blakeney village is conveniently located to provide the perfect starting point for all that the Forest has to offer and also for those wanting to explore further afield (if you can actually drag yourselves away!) The Wye Valley, Gloucester, the Cotswolds, Herefordshire, South Wales and the ancient city of Bath are all within an hour’s drive.
A large local area map is on the wall to help you plan your days in the Forest and a selection of local maps and walking books are available to use during your stay. There’s a wide range of eateries to choose from and we’re happy to make recommendations.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Where you’ll be

Blakeney, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

Arch Cottage sits in the heart of Blakeney - a traditional Forest of Dean village conveniently situated on the edge of the forest. It's easy to find and perfect for exploring the wide variety of attractions in the area.
Walkers, cyclists, riders, divers, canoeists, climbers, fishermen and golfers are all well catered for and with the beautiful Forest of Dean just on your door step, it's perfect for a break with family or friends. The Forest is beautiful whatever the season and has a myriad of scenic footpaths and trails to discover.
For fun (whether you have children in tow or not), why not try Go Ape!, Puzzlewood, the two steam railways, cycling trails, segways or stand up paddle-boarding to name just a few of the options. There are even giant mazes and riding schools too. A wealth of historical attractions can be found nearby including castles (Chepstow, Caldicot and Goodrich for example), cathedrals (Hereford and Gloucester), ancient woodlands and the beautiful ruins of Tintern Abbey, 18th century Littledean jail, decommissioned collieries and the atmospheric Clearwell caves which used to be the source of ochre for painting.
In addition cider makers, gin distilleries, aromatherapists and cooking schools are all in the proximity. Visit Symonds Yat, Yat Rock or The Kymin for wonderful scenery, rock climbing or spotting wildlife such a peregrine falcons.
There are many excellent pubs and restaurants within easy reach, and many of them are dog friendly too.
For the more adventurous, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, zip-wiring and diving are all within easy reach.
Wildlife lovers can enjoy the wide abundance of birds and even try to spot wild boar, deer, the recently introduced beavers and pine martens.
Explore the market towns throughout the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley with many craft and heritage centres, tea and coffee shops to be discovered. There are two lovely local small cinemas which are well worth a visit on a rainy day.
Lydney has its own outdoor lido Bathurst swimming pool, a beautiful country estate (famous for its spring bluebells), a great craft centre and a picturesque harbour on the River Severn as some of its many attractions. The River Severn is also the home of the unique Severn Bore - a seasonal tidal event allowing the spectacle of surfing down the river.
The fantastic website is an excellent source of information on the whole Forest of Dean and Wye Valley area.
Walking distance from the cottage you can find the well-stocked village store, a post office, a friendly church, a very tasty fish and chip shop, and the local public house, The Cock Inn. There are also some attractive easy country walks right from Arch Cottage doorstep - around the local fields, woods and along streams (including Fairy Glen) and a disused railway.

Tim and I welcome you to Arch Cottage, Blakeney, in the beautiful Parish of Awre. You have chosen a fantastic part of the country for your break and we really look forward to having you to stay. We enjoy exploring and learning about the beautiful Forest of Dean and its abundant wildlife. As keen joggers, we like to discover trail runs and the forest has many. We also love relaxing with friends over home-cooked food and of course a glass of wine. I love cooking and making things from things we grow in the garden or forage in the countryside. Hopefully you will enjoy some jam I have made. Tim is a photographer who loves to sketch, and is always working on the best way to outwit elusive pike fish everywhere! Upholstery is my latest challenge and I've just completed diploma course in traditional methods. Hopefully some items will make it into the cottage! We love going to the theatre when funds and time allows (mainly to watch our son, aspiring to be a success in musical theatre!) We just know you will enjoy this wonderful place - whether it’s your first visit of discovery or one of many return visits to a favourite destination.
